Over 40 youth participated in the historic Youth Amazing Race that took place in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

The event, which took place on December 13, 2012, was modeled after the award-winning international reality game show The Amazing Race, in which teams compete against each other to reach the destined pit stop.

However, the Hargeisa version was held in order to raise awareness about youth-related services and to engage the youth on how they can contribute to development.

“I am so happy to pariticipate in this historic race,” Mustafa Saeed, a graphics designer and

one of the contestants, said. “No other event has ever brought so many youth together.”

The event was also held as part of the launch activities for the Youth Entrepreneurship grant, whose aim is to promote youth entrepreneurship and self-employment opportunities across all the regions of Somaliland. Besides providing a six-week training programme, the grant will also award financial resources through competitive seed grants for the best viable business plans.

Fathia Abdullahi, one of the volunteers said the amazing race was “a life-changing experience for the youth of Somaliland.”

In February 2013, the Transition Initiatives for Stabilization, in collaboration with the Centre for Research & Dialogue (CRD) launched “Somali Idol” show.

The show, the first of its kind anywhere in Somalia, is aimed at reviving Somali arts and music, and to enhance the role of arts in peace building in Mogadishu.

The program, whose slogan is Hirgeli Hammigaaga Faneed, or “Realize Your Artistic Dream” in Somali, will also provide a platform and an opportunity for the youth in Mogadishu to express their feelings and become creative through music and comedy performance. Over 500 contestants have so far been shortlisted to

participate in the program. Foos Ali Mohamed, a high school student who participated in the show said the competition was a very important platform for engaging the youth.

“Music shouldn’t be seen just as a money-making business,” Foos said. “Music can be used for entertainment, but also to guide the society and especially the youth.”

For Ibrahim Ahmed Mohamed (right), a 22-year-old shopkeeper, said the opportunity provided him with a stage to showcase his talent for the first time ever. “I am so excited to be part of this show,” Ibrahim said. “Somali Idol has given me the opportunity to be who I am and show my talent to the Somali people.”
