Welcome to Oxfam Trailwalker India 2012

NThis map book has been prepared to guide you through the Event route, checkpoint by checkpoint. It is designed to be your primary navigational aid during pre-event training and throughout the Event weekend.

Oxfam Trailwalker India is a tough event. Much of the trail covers difficult terrain and you will be exposed to the elements for many hours. It requires appropriate and c o m m i t t e d t r a i n i n g a n d preparation. By registering in Oxfam Trailwalker India, you have accepted responsibility for your own conduct and for the risks inherent in such a demanding endurance event.

A planned approach to the Event, adequate training, familiarity with the route and thorough knowledge of the Event rules and the important information contained in the EVENT HANDBOOK will help to minimise risk to you and your team. Good luck!

TRAIL ETIQUETTE

SHARING THE TRAILS : Participants share the walking tracks used for Oxfam Trailwalker with the general public when training, and throughout the Event. Always respect the requests of landowners and Villagers. Be considerate of other users and give way to cattle and tractors on the Trail, between Sangam and Bidadi.

DON’T BE A TOSSER : We ask participants and Support Crew to help us make Oxfam Trailwalker India an environmental friendly event and to ensure that all waste produced by this event is dealt in a responsible and sustainable way. When on the trail, always take your waste with you. Leave nothing but footprints.

SAFETY ESSENTIALS

FIRST AID : Each team is advised to carry a first aid kit, including pressure bandages to treat injuries such as sprains, blisters, cuts and snake bites. Team members are encouraged to learn basic first aid techniques.

NIGHT WALKING : Walking at night requires special vigilance on the part of all team members to reduce the risk of injury. If any member of your team feels uncomfortable about walking at night, your team should not attempt it.

DEHYDRATION : Insufficient consumption of fluids may result in dehydration. Symptoms include tiredness, irritability, tight/heavy feeling muscles, headache, dry mouth and lips.

HYPONATREMIA : It is a condition in which too much water

has been consumed resulting in reduced salt levels in the blood and body tissues. This is an extremely dangerous condition that can rapidly lead to a coma and may result in death. Symptoms include fatigue, nausea, headaches and lack of coordination. To maintain the correct hydration level, drink electrolyte drinks instead of, or in addition to water. Electrolyte drinks contain salts and thereby assist in maintaining the correct salt balance in your body. During the Event itself, make sure you are urinating at regular intervals and that it is light yellow to clear. If you are not urinating or it is dark in color, you may be dehydrated. Frequent, clear colored urination can signify too high a fluid intake. If you experience these symptoms during the Event, check with medical staff at the nearest checkpoint.

HYPOTHERMIA : The temperature can drop dramatically during the Event and lack of sufficient clothing or getting wet can cause hypothermia. Symptoms can include fatigue, shivering, muscle spasms, clammy skin, stammering and hallucinations. If you become hypothermic, change out of wet clothes immediately, cover your head, face, neck and body with warm clothing, consume hot drinks and high calorie food to maintain body temperature and seek medical help at the nearest checkpoint.

HEAT EXHAUSTION : During hot weather the body’s internal temperature can rise resulting in heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include severe thirst, muscle weakness, nausea, fast shallow breathing, irritability and headache. Symptoms include severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulties, flushed hot dry skin and elevation of body temperature. If a member of your team exhibits these symptoms, find a shady area, administer frequent sips of water.
