INTRODUCTION

The congestion has been causing many critical problems and most populated cities. To travel to different places within the city is becoming more difficult for the traveler in traffic. Due to these congestion problems, people lose time, miss opportunities, and to traffic congestions there is a loss in productivity from workers, trade opportunities are lost delivery gets delayed, and there by the cost on increasing.

HISTORY

A traffic light is a device that is designed to control the flow of traffic by using three colored lights. These lights are mainly green, Yellow and Red. In 1860’s London, the first traffic control device had arms that extended out to command drivers on how to react at an intersection. The first four way three colour traffic light did not come until December 1920’s in Detroit.

MICRO CONTROLLER

A microcontroller (or MCU, short for microcontroller unit) is a small computer on a single IC containing a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals. Program memory in the form of RAM, NOR Flash or OTP ROM is also often included on chip, as well as a typically small amount of RAM. Microcontrollers are designed for embedded applications, in contrast to the microprocessors used in personal computers or other general purpose applications consisting of various discrete chips.

CONCLUSION

Use of microcontroller instead of other controllers such as PLC makes the smart traffic controller hardware a low cost system

The program downloaded into the microcontroller enables it to have a high accuracy timing, high independency and consistently

It enables the proposed smart traffic controller system to realize traffic flow optimization strategies at a single or network junctions
