INTRODUCTION FROM MINISTER FOR ENTERPRISE, JOBS AND INNOVATION

The friendship between Ireland and India runs deep and ranges across many generations and activities, from education, the professions, politics and our shared colonial past. In recent times, a vibrant Ireland- India business relationship has emerged with solid progress through growth in two way trade and investment and increasing numbers of tourists in each direction.

As one of the world’s most open economies, Ireland welcomes the further opening of the Indian economy. Irish companies have high hopes for strong and sustainable business partnerships with Indian enterprises which will grow our commercial ties and benefit both parties; this is the driving force behind this Trade Mission - an increase in business traffic which will result in more trade, investment and ultimately jobs.

We recognise the potential for new commercial opportunities in India’s strong economic performance and we will continue to strive for wider and deeper business and technical ties with Irish enterprises. As a country that exports 85% of its entire output, we recognise too the need to be competitive and customer focussed. We have no doubt that the skills exist in Ireland to match India’s growing business needs; our objective this week is to make these connections and fully realise the potential for increased two way business linkages.

Richard BrutonMinister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation

05

INTRODUCTION FROM ENTERPRISE IRELAND

This Trade Mission to India is an important element in Enterprise Ireland’s Asia Strategy, in which India is targeted as a key priority market for increased trade and business links. India is rapidly transforming into a Global economic powerhouse and has moved into a central position, not just as one of the key engines of growth in Asia, but also as a key player in global trade. The Irish companies on this trade mission are committed to being part of that growth in trade. Enterprise Ireland first opened a dedicated office in India – in Delhi in 2006, reflecting our commitment to this rapidly growing market. Since then we have seen a substantial increase in the number of our client companies exporting to India, currently standing at over 100 companies – an annual increase of over 10%. Enterprise Ireland is currently working with an additional 100 clients who are at the early stages of selling to this market. This high level of client engagement has resulted in a doubling of our indigenous exports to India over the last 3 years. This growth clearly demonstrates that Ireland and Irish companies have both the capabilities and innovative products and services to build a successful and fast-expanding trading relationship with what is one of the world’s largest markets.

There are now more than 30 Irish companies with their own offices in India - companies ranging from educational institutes - education is one of the most important sources of linkages between Ireland and India - to innovative companies providing leading products and services in software, telecommunications, life sciences, aviation and other high technology sectors.Enterprise Ireland has identified these and other niche sectors in which there are clear opportunities for Irish companies to develop and expand their sales in India.

This Trade Mission will assist in raising the profile of Ireland as a proven supplier of products and services to the Indian market. It highlights that India is open for business and that many Irish companies have the leading edge product and service capabilities to partner with Indian companies to service that growth. I wish all the participating Irish companies every success on the mission and Enterprise Ireland is fully committed to playing its part in achieving that success.
