IT’S ABOUT TIME!TRADE AND PROFESSION BACK NEW INDUSTRY EVENT

They asked for a different kind of exhibition and environment where they would have all the time they need to do business and where they knew every exhibitor was there to do business with retailers like themselves.

Retailers and the trade wanted a forum where

business and retail owners could access free practical educational sessions and training for themselves and their teams. They wanted an event which allows them to network among their peers and look for ideas to help them grow their business.

Trade Days is your event, brought to you through a partnership between multi award-winning healthcare event organiser CloserStill Media and BHTA Engage and supported by THIIS Magazine, Medtrade, Medilink, Disabled Living Foundation and a number of other very infl uential organisations.

The registration for the event opened this month online at www.tradedays.co.uk and already more than 500 retailers have registered their place. More than 120 exhibitors have booked into the Trade Days exhibition including some of the biggest names in the industry as well plenty of new companies with exciting innovations. Event Director Matthew Butler is encouraging retailers and their teams to register their place early so that they get all the news about the event as it is announced and plan their visit carefully to take advantage of the exclusive deals, buying and training opportunities.

“Trade Days will be unlike any other event that retailers in this market have been to”, said Matthew

Welcome to YOUR new event... the countdown has begun to the opening of Trade Days (Sunday/Monday, October 5th & 6th – NEC Birmingham) – the new event for businesses like yours who retail, wholesale, manufacture or supply products for the mobility, independent living and assistive technology market.

As the name implies, it is a ‘trade-only’ event created at the request of the Trade who demanded its own event that is relevant, more focussed and tailored exclusively to retailers’ and suppliers’ needs.

Knowing that everyone you see and speak to is in the trade, just like yourself, will make it so much easier to do business.

Since 1917 the BHTA has worked to support businesses in our industry. We do this in a variety of ways, such as providing networking opportunities w i t h i n competition rules and

formal representation at British Standards and International Standards. We have developed strong governmental connections allowing us to assist in shaping policy. The development of our Code of Practice has given our members a unique selling point in a competitive market and emphasises the industry’s commitment to protecting customers’ interests.

In 2012 the BHTA formed a new company, BHTA Engage. With David Russell at the helm and the Homecare Publishing brands under its ownership, Engage is already making a big impact offering novel and cost effective ways for businesses to promote themselves.

I was delighted when the concept of Trade Days

The right show at the right time

was first mooted to me by David. For a number of years we have heard feedback from many members that there was a need for something different in the industry’s event and exhibition calendar. In particular, the need for space to actually ‘do business’ without the distractions that often happen at other events.

Closer Still Media have listened and worked with businesses within our industry to ensure that Trade Days delivers what businesses within our industry need. The show will be a unique opportunity to take 2 days to step back and focus on your business without distractions. You will have the opportunity to have meaningful discussions and do business with over 130 exhibitors.

You will have the opportunity to listen to and ask questions of experts on a variety of topics from marketing and internet selling through to recognising dementia and shop design. You will have the opportunity to network, to see new products and ideas and do deals that no other show will provide.

In short, you will have the opportunity to ‘do business’. Can you afford not to attend?

There’s a (supposedly) ancient Chinese curse that translates as ‘May you live in interesting times’. I am in no doubt that for those of us in the healthcare and assistive technology industry we are doing just that.

The challenges and opportunities facing our businesses are immense. Whether industry specific; health & social care reforms, personal budgets and pressure on public sector spending or broader; a slow economy, internet competition or staffing concerns, not a single business is immune.

Why Trade Days? To see the new show emerge is fantastic news and is a real step forward for the Industry. At last a real ‘Trade’ show where suppliers and retailers can talk sensibly together without interruptions. It will certainly be a show that we can encourage our team to visit.

Mike Williams, Managing Director, Ableworld

From a retailer point of view this type of ‘Trade Only’ event is long overdue. Although it’s always useful to attend other events where there is a mixture of visitors, it can be very difficult to actually ‘talk business’. A couple of days where we can discuss confidential issues and spend more time in detailed discussions is just what we need right now.

Alastair Gibbs, Managing Director TPG DisableAids Ltd

An event like this is a long time coming. It makes my investment in time, effort and cost so much more productive when you have a consolidation of trade organisations only in the one arena, dealing directly without distraction or disruption. This will be a true value adding business opportunity for both suppliers and retailers.

Billy Finnie, Managing Director, Mobility Scotland Ltd

I am looking forward to the opportunity to find new products and speak to suppliers at an event that is designed for that purpose. We will definitely be attending and the inclusion of a Sunday will make it easier for many other retailers to attend too. Great idea.

Kevin Snowball, Managing Director, Simplyhealth

A trade only event would be very welcomed and would facilitate more open discussions on the stands. I would certainly take advantage of attending on a Sunday and this will be a good opportunity for staff who we normally can’t afford to release to attend shows as well

Duncan Gillett, Managing Director, Clearwell Mobility

Fantastic news! At last, somebody has listened. A dedicated trade show is long overdue and I think it will breathe new life into the healthcare exhibition circuit. A different approach with some new ideas is just what we need to stimulate fresh thinking. I’m genuinely looking forward to this new opportunity and I’ll be supporting the initiative all the way – let’s hope the rest of the industry do too!

Geoff Morris, Director, Uniscan

In an industry where a number of events provide a great platform for building our brand we believe the new event will provide an excellent opportunity for building business relationships.

Tony Mercer, Sales and Marketing Director, Handicare I am immediately drawn to the new event. A trade only focus is exactly right for the market at this time and exactly right for my business too. I’m sure that retailers will want to be there and find themselves great new products for their showrooms.

David Tomlin, Managing Director, Primacare

Our industry has been crying out for a UK trade only exhibition to allow a concentration of manufacturers and retailers to come together. This is an ideal chance for the whole industry to discuss business ideas and opportunities that we do not always have time to do at other shows. Training seminars will help make this a worthwhile journey for all retailers and a Sunday start should allow businesses to visit without closing.

Matt Major, Sales Manager – Europe, MK Battery International

The prospect of a Trade Only exhibition is exciting and has been long overdue. A show that concentrates on business to business trade is essential in enhancing the profile of companies and the industry in general. This will be a very important step forward in the development and re-strengthening of a specialist and growing market…….count me in!

Samantha Langtree, Managing Director, Rise & Recline Ltd

people we want to meet. Our customer-base is largely business-to-business rather than end-user and we look forward to a concentrated two-days of meetings with exactly the right people we like to get close to.”

Andrew Guilbert, Managing Director of Isagi said: “Isagi took its name from the saying ‘It Seemed A Good Idea’. So it seemed another good Idea for us to participate in Trade Days as our patented nonslip fabrics are used by manufacturers in the mobility sector and our range of nonslip products are stocked by retailers. This is an ideal way of meeting both types of customer in a focused exhibition, and for us to show our new products, grow both our manufacturing and retail relationships.”

Michael Railton of Sandpiper Shoes’ said:“We are looking to expand our approved stockist base in the coming months, so we’re pleased to be exhibiting at Trade Days to allow our existing retailers to view the exciting new product developments, while giving an opportunity to potential clients to obtain a greater understanding about how Sandpiper Shoes can increase the footfall in a retail mobility store. A ‘trade only’ event without the distraction of ‘end-users’, really allows a strong focus on what support is available to the retailer to enhance the customer experience.”

As early registration confirms, retailers are excited about Trade Days.

Phil Moore at the Care Team said:“It has always been important for retailers to work closely with their suppliers and, with a ‘trade only’ focus, Trade Days provides the right environment for businesses like ours to be able to sit down with existing and new suppliers and have the time to talk properly about how we can move forward together.”

‘Perfect environment’

Jeanette Warner, Director of Better Mobility Limited agreed, and added: “We are really looking forward to attending

Trade Days, it’s much needed, and so overdue! Until now individual manufacturer shows and large healthcare shows were our only option, this will gather all of the relevant people together in the perfect environment to further all of our businesses.”

Nick Buchanan of Millercare agrees: who says: “For a progressive retailer like us, Trade Days is a great step forward. Being able to talk to all our existing suppliers and others we could work with in the future in a ‘trade only’ environment will mean that there will be lots of business taking place. We’ll definitely be there.”

Steve Warburton, Managing Director of Disabled Care & Mobility typified the response from retailers: “Fantastic news about Trade Days. I am really looking forward to a couple of productive days.”

And suppliers have been enthusiastic right from the launch of the event. Charlie Wall of Camelot said:“We are looking forward to the opportunity of exhibiting to a trade customer audience. It will enable us to spend more time presenting our products to the key buyers rather than to the end users” and

James Nicholls of First Senior added: “When I heard about Trade Days my immediate thoughts were ‘about time’. The industry has been lacking a genuine trade show. Our Sales and Marketing team are already gearing up for this and counting down the months.”

Sales BuildersIf you are looking for new market opportunities, developing new sales and attracting new customers, then four sectors will be featured in one seminar. They are telecare, footwear, sensory products and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) products.

The seminar is entitled: New markets, new profit opportunities – introducing growing market sectors in which retailers can build a business and attract new customers. Representatives of companies that are developing businesses in the featured sectors will give a taster of where the sales come from, who buys the products, why they buy and how you can develop sales in your own business.

Can social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter really make a difference to your business? ‘Get the customer and keep the customer using the power of Social Media’ aims to walk attendees through the steps they need to take to use social media to generate enquiries and sales through the process of staying in touch and conversation. It is being presented by David Standing, one of the founders and CEO for mybizadvisor.

If someone in your business would benefit from learning about simple but effective selling techniques, then a session that looks at cross-selling and up-selling will be well worth adding to the list of things to attend. Dr Barend ter Haar has been involved in the industry for 37 years. The session will focus on techniques to give customers better value and make sure they return for repeat sales along with how to make better margins by using simple techniques.

Overcoming objections is crucial when you want to sell more and one of the most common objections is all about the cost of the products. ‘How much!! - Overcoming the Price Objection’ will highlight

practical tips and useful techniques to help you sell those big ticket items more effectively. Whoever is selling the high value products in your company will benefit from attending this session, presented by Shaun McCluskey, Commercial Manager of Kirton Healthcare. Shaun has plenty of skills and ideas to help retailers develop their own sales techniques and achieve positive results.

Marketing BoostersPromoting in this market needn’t cost a fortune and needn’t take forever. That’s the message in a seminar that will give you ideas about how you can generate interest locally on a shoe-string budget and do it quickly. The presentation will use real examples from our marketplace. Simple retail marketing that’s on the cheap and really works will be presented by THIIS Editor, David N Russell. The guarantee is that anyone who attends the seminar will go away with a list of things they could implement in a retail business immediately.

If there is someone in your team who is responsible for producing marketing items, then a seminar about how to write in a way that will make customers take action is sure to be thought-provoking. ‘A word in your ear – How to write stuff that sells’ is presented by Andy Owen, a successful copywriter who will talk you though the basics so that when you next write something, the message really gets across.

One way to generate interest in the business is to run an open day in the showroom. ‘How to run a successful event, open day or professionals’ training day’ will provide tips and guidance so that when you run a showroom event, you’ll get it right. The presenter of this session, Andrew Gubbins of CAS Marketing, has been helping to promote events and organisations in our marketplace for years. If you have someone in the team who would be good at running an event

for you, then this is the session they should be in.

Business DevelopmentThere’s also an opportunity to hear from someone who has been involved in building a business over the past couple of years, focussing on ‘high end’ products with strong design features.

Ed Warner founded Motionspot in 2012 to design and build beautiful, accessible homes for anyone living with a disability. Ed says that retailers will be given a tried and tested ‘game-plan’ to help them develop their business in a market sector that is only going to get bigger and bigger.

‘Creating an effective retail space to improve sales - even in the smallest space’ is an opportunity to hear from a retail design expert who will show you how to connect with your customers, provide simple space planning techniques to increase customer flow and consider the key drivers within a retail environment. Dean Waugh has 15 years’ experience in the retail design arena.

Technically SpeakingIf you supply batteries to customers, then ‘Shedding light on batteries – essential tips for you and your customers’ will be a useful session to attend. Presented by Dan Caines of MK Battery it will give you all the information you need to manage customer’s expectations and to provide knowledge that could cut those costly call outs. From the basics of battery care to tips to enable end users to maximise their “fuel source”, you’ll gain useful information for both you and your customers.

Customer FocusThe way some customers will be paying for

their products in the future is changing with Personal Budgets, Personal Health Budgets and Direct Payments all becoming part of the mix. If you’re not 100% sure how they could impact on your business, then there’s a session that will give you a great insight into how some of your customers might be making their choices in the future. It is presented by someone who is using the funding to buy products and you’ll also hear about a gap in the market that could turn into a new opportunity for retailers. The presenter is Julia Winter who became disabled 20 years ago and is now a full time wheelchair user. She has received funding from her local council in the form of a Direct Payment and has used this to employ her own personal assistants and to purchase equipment to help her with everyday life.

In addition, you can also attend:

• 5 things you need to know about clients with medical diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Parkinson’s Disease. • Making your business more retail savvy,• Developing your own app, • 10 things you need to know about equipment assessments for Plus Size People.• 10 things both manufacturers and retailers should know about complying with the UK flammability regulations and presentations on what the AT business model of the future look like and how it might impact on marketing and communication strategies. • A panel discussion with a group a retailers will talk about the challenges and opportunities in the marketplace.

BHTA TheatreAlongside the four different seminar areas, the BHTA also has a dedicated theatre at the show and will be running a series of seminars which

Trade Days is all about giving retailers and suppliers the time to talk business in an environment that is ‘trade only’ and, as well as providing two days of very focussed meetings and discussions, visitors will find lots going on, with plenty of interesting, useful and relevant seminars and workshops taking place.

The promise is that there’ll be something for everyone, business owners, managing directors, technicians, showroom staff and sales teams. Retailers are encouraged to bring along their team members to meet suppliers and sit in on the free seminars that are designed to give businesses real, easy and cost-effective ways to grow sales and profits.

The seminar streams include – Sales Builders, Marketing Boosters, Customer Service Focus, Business Development and Technically Speaking sessions.

will give both members and non-members plenty of updates and important information.

There will be a session run by Ed Mylles, Director of Business Development at the DLF which will explain how companies can get in front of the people looking for advice on independent living.

A seminar will highlight for suppliers and retailers how engaging with Independent Occupational Therapists can help grow your business. If you want to fi nd out more about the work of independent occupational therapists and assessments and how you can build links with local independent occupational therapists, then this is the session for you.

Sessions will also provide updates on the Healthcare and Assistive Technology Society (HAATS) which is relevant for anyone involved in the assistive healthcare/technology profession, employers and employees, practitioners and non-practitioners alike.

If your company is a BHTA member, then you can also check whether you are complying with the BHTA Code of Practice. Sarah Lepak, BHTA

It’s about time that an event for trade only was conceived. We’ve found existing shows just too frustrating when it comes to trying to do business and so we will defi nitely attend Trade Days.

Dave Smith, Managing Director, Beactive Mobility

The news about ‘Trade Days’ is excellent. The industry is crying out for a trade only event where wholesalers and retailers can do business together without the interruption of end users and the constant challenge of quoting prices. Of course there is, and will always be, a need for ‘end users’ events, but there are several shows that are open to the public. Thanks to those with the foresight to make this trade event happen and for providing what those in the trade have been requesting for years.

Dane Lawrence, Product Advisor, East Coast Mobility

Operating at both ends of the supply chain, John Preston Healthcare Group are greatly looking forward to the UK’s fi rst ever ‘trade only’ show as it will give us quality time with trade suppliers and trade customers alike. We are planning to launch some exciting new products and TradeDays presents a unique opportunity to launch to the trade in a professional environment.

Nick Cooke, Commercial Director,John Preston Healthcare Group

Classic Canes is delighted to support the new trade-only event for the healthcare industry. We have been asking for a serious, business-oriented event for years. The time is absolutely right for a trade fair of this type and we encourage our stockists to make the most of this valuable opportunity.

Charlotte Gillan, Managing Partner, Classic Canes

We look forward to being at the new event. The equipment supply sector is maturing and becoming increasingly professional. As such we need time together to improve even further. Quality time – B2B – building relationships; increasing trade; exchanging ideas. It will be good for industry committed suppliers like Assistive Partner to get a chance to show off in a professional environment where we all share a single goal – added value.

Julian Cobbledick, Director, Assistive Partner

This is an event that the industry has been crying out for - a dedicated event when the trade can meet up with no distractions and can spend some very focussed time on business issues. The Sunday opening will allow independent retailers to take time away from their businesses without having to worry about the showroom and we hope that they support the new event as we will be doing.

Chris Manning, UK Sales Director, Patterson Medical

My business partner Lesley, and I, both believe that the Trade Days concept is an excellent idea. It will allow exhibitors to showcase their products and services and connect directly with distributors in a more open business focused forum. Trade only days would enable business owners to discuss and network more freely with the benefi t of offering maximum attention to business growth and development, rather than avoiding and attracting the attention of the buying public, which has always created some awkward moments. We look forward to visiting trade only shows and will certainly invest in our time to support the show.

Mandy Fenton, Euromobility

Drive Medical would be eager to support a trade only exhibition for the future. In recent times we have felt that the effectiveness of attending other events has been diluted as trade attendance and interest has dwindled. We feel that the inclusion of a weekend exhibition day will encourage attendance by many retailers who otherwise might not be able to make it during the working week, and compressing the exhibition into 2 days rather than 3 makes a lot of sense. We are looking forward to exhibiting at this new event in 2014.

Richard McGleenan, Managing Director, Drive Medical Limited We are very excited at the announcement of this new event. The opportunity to interact with a large proportion of our customer base in one place has real benefi ts and advantages. We think the concept of adding training into the show experience also adds an extra incentive for the trade to attend, and along with a weekend day, will help smaller retailers that previously haven’t attended shows as they confl ict with their normal working time. It will be a great way to showcase new products and services, and we hope will become a future ‘must attend’ show.

James Bridge, Managing Director, Flexel

Director of Governance & Policy Development will help you double check that you are doing all the things you should be and make sure you understand the commitment you have made.

Another session about selling online while observing best practice , will debate how the kind of advice your business gives face-to-face can be duplicated online.

There are a number of guarantees for visitors to Trade Days and they include that anyone attending the event will learn something to take back and implement in their business straight away and that you’ll leave the event inspired and with lots of new ideas. The extensive free seminar programme will ensure that your time is very well spent, whether you choose to attend on just one day or, as a number of people are planning to do, spend both Sunday and Monday taking time out to think about how you can develop your business in the future.

To see the full seminar programme, visit the website at www.tradedays.co.uk

If so, come along to our photo booth on the exhibition fl oor at Trade Days where our onsite photographer will be on hand to photograph you and your colleagues.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get some up-to-date photos to use across your company collateral, adding a nice personal touch to your organisation and the best part is that it’s completely free of charge to all exhibitors and delegates.

We have thought for some time that this would be a good idea and to see it come to fruition is brilliant. As a company that values suppliers and good working relationships with them, we are really looking forward to this opportunity. At other shows we can sometimes meet with suppliers, but their time is often taken up by professionals or end-users and so we often lack the opportunity to talk in depth. It’s great to have an event specifi cally to talk business.

Adam Spiby, Sales Director, Healthcare Matters

Knowing that everyone at the new event will be looking for products and relevant ideas for their business will give us the opportunity to create specifi c initiatives. This is something that we welcome. Being able to spend the time to have more focused retail business discussions at a dedicated event will make the two days an effective use of everyone’s time.

trueCall CareWorried about mum and dad?

While the telephone is an essential lifeline, it can also cause problems for older and vulnerable people. They may be confused by telemarketing calls that they receive; they may agree to order products that they don’t need; they may be taken advantage of by unscrupulous sales people or scammers.

trueCall Care was designed to protect vulnerable people by dramatically reducing the number of nuisance calls they receive. It simply plugs in between the phone and the phone line and intercepts any unrecognised callers – friends and family get through but nuisance callers don’t. In independent trials carried out by Trading Standards trueCall blocked 98% of nuisance calls for older and vulnerable residents. Carers can monitor and control trueCall Care remotely over the internet checking the calls that have been received.
