FRESHMAN CORNER

What standout fresh-man has made a contribution to the team in a huge way? Well, this individual hailing from Vestal, N.Y. has a strong work ethic and a determined spirit to be his best. He works hard and carefully corrects his triple jump technique to get an-other step closer to his greatest potential. His name, Gabriel Pickett. In hot competition Pickett mustered up one more big jump at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship to take the lead by a 1.5 inches. His jump of 48’ 8” also quali-fied him for the IC4A and USA Jr. Championships. The experiences this young talent witnessed in just one year while at the USA Championship, the Eastern Championship and the confer-ence championship was most memorable. Entering his sopho-more year, Pickett is prepar-ing for the fall training pro-gram as he looks to go leaps and bounds into this coming year.

The men’s team finished third overall in the Outdoor Championship taking first in six events. Seniors Keogh, Freeland and Dryden competed in the hammer, 100m

dash and long jump respectively, while junior Mahoney took the steeplechase and 1500m run and Pickett captured the triple jump event title. Success

continued with Freeland and Dryden in the 4x100 relay team of McGee and Pensyl while Freeland also had a second place finish in the 200m dash. Third place finishers were Parisi in the 800m, Littlepage for discus and Du-

rante for javelin. Taking fourth places were Malloy and Taylor in the high jump and 800 events. Dryden also sprinted to fifth in the 100 dash whereas freshmen McGee and McFraizer took fifth in the 400 and 110 hurdle events Dryden had other appear-ances in both the 200 dash and the 4x400 relay events with fellow members McGee Harding and Duncan capturing sixth place. Harding also participated in the 400 and the 4x800 relay of Taylor, Kellar, and Parisi capturing sixth place points. Rounding up the points were Pensyl with

seventh in the long jump and McFrazier in the high jump event came away with eighth. On the women’s side, Gocht and

Cowart became individual champions in the 800 and 400 hurdles. Gocht then joined the 4x800 relay of Bennett, Stephens, and Smith for another gold. Freshman

Iwugo, took second in the 200 and joined the 4x400 team of Williams, Bennett and Stephens for another second place finish (photo to the right). Stephens went on to receive an individual third place for her effort in the 800 run while, the 4x100 relay

Hercules, Dorsey, Butler and DePass also captured third place medals. Sophomore West im-proved her time in the 400 hurdles and placed fourth while teammate Cowart also added a fifth place finish in 100 hurdles to her accomplishments. Thrower Owens pushed the shot put out far enough to take fifth place points. Williams in the 400 event placed seventh then eighth in the 200 dash while sophomore Hercules completed the point total with an eighth place finish in the 100 dash.

round in the long jump and the 200m dash respectively. Mahoney’s 8:36.10 placed him fourth overall for the week-end. His time was also the second best collegiate time in the country! Keogh, the school record holder in the hammer, placed seventh with his second best throw of the year at 62.75m (205’10.5”) then topping it again by almost a full meter at the NCAA Championship with an outstanding 63.66m (208’10”)!

This year at the Penn Relays, the men’s 4x100 relay took the first place IC4A Championship Plaque. It was uncertain the team would run at all since their preliminary time placed them as first alternate and not top finalists. One of the eight teams de-cided not to run and the Owls had prepared to move right in. They did just that and soared to first place.

The Owls took 6 ath-letes to the NCAA East Re-gional round held in Bloom-ington, Indiana. They faired well while also experienc-ing their first encounter with tornadoes. While the weather was not particularly cooperative, Ma-honey and Cowart managed to run their fastest times of the sea-son. Cowart’s (right) 58.78 just missed qualifying for the NCAA

Championship in the 400m hurdles. Gocht, mem-ber of the 4x800 relay team who broke school and conference records, also qualified, and partici-pated in the 800 meter run for the Owls. Men’s relay teammates of the 4x100, Dryden and Freeland also made it to the NCAA Eastern

This year the Owls had an outstanding showing at the USA Na-

tional level as three freshmen qualified for the Junior section of the USA Champi-onship and Travis Mahoney qualified for the Senior divi-sion of the USA

National Championship. Steeplechasers Travis Ma-honey and Phil Fanz made amazing strides at Hayward Field. Mahoney competed against the top male steeple-chasers in the entire country on the collegiate and professional level. Gabriel Pickett after winning the triple jump event at the conference with a

USA Spotlight Travis Mahoney had an out-

standing 2010-2011 year with first place in the Atlantic 10 Confer-

ence Championship and fourth in the NCAA Regional meet. The

track success began indoors with big wins at the Penn State Invita-tional and the Indoor Atlantic 10 Championship. It soon flowed

onto the outdoor track as he es-tablished the second fastest time in the country in the 3000k meter steeplechase. Mahoney not only made a splash in the collegiate

world, his time also qualified him for the USA National Champion-

ship held in Eugene, Oregon. Things are certainly looking up for

Mahoney as he enters his final year for the Owls and the possibil-ity of once again qualifying for the USA National Championship 2012

which is the Olympic qualifying event.

Way to Go Travis!!
