award-winning comedian and actor Eddie Izzard returns to Hertfordshire in July for Laughs in the Park 2011. Rachel Goude

spoke to him about what his inspiration was behind the event and why he chose St Albans.

Q It has been quoted by the New York Times that you are the ‘most exportable British comedian since the heyday of Monty Python’ ...When did you realise you were funny and could make a career out of it?

A I wanted to be an actor from the age of seven but when I was twelve during a review at school I realised I was making people laugh in the classroom that was the key point

Q Laughs in the Park on July 22nd, 23rd and 24th at Verulamium Park in St Albans is in its second year, what was your inspiration for a comedy festival as opposed to a ‘Live at the Apollo’ type of show?

A Every summer there are music festivals all over the country, they do have a comedy tent at

these events but it seemed comedy was the poor relation so I thought why not a comedy festival.

Q A lot of work is involved setting up this show with a purpose built stage involving 400 crew, why St Albans, when you could have staged this event in a purpose built arena?

A The whole idea of a festival is to find a field and make it happen I had been thinking about doing this for about 10 years. With my promoter Mick Perrin, we researched different places around the country and St Albans were keen they said they could it. My Father was evacuated to St Albans in the 1940’s his 82nd birthday was on September 22nd the first date of the inaugural show last year, and it was fantastic. We have seating for those who want it but also areas for people to sit on the grass and be entertained. There is an excellent food and drink area and each evening will end with a firework display.

Q Ross Noble and Tommy Tiernan are also performing have you worked with them before?

A Yes with both of them I know them well. Ross is an expert in improvisation and will be the perfect host, Tommy is a very funny guy.

Q Of today’s generation of comedians who would you pay to go and see?

A I love Harry Enfield, John Cleese of course I love Monty Python and also Micky Flanagan.

Q Acting has become a big and successful part of your career you have worked alongside some huge British and Hollywood stars, has anyone in particular impressed you?

A George Clooney he has great style, the lead actor almost always sets the tone and he was charming and inclusive.

Q 43 marathons in 51 days raising a huge amount of money for Sport Relief a tremendous feat why did you do that, surely it pushed the boundaries of endurance?

A I wanted to run, it was a good thing to try, it was a healthy, it was positive, and it raised £1.8 million.

Q Did you set out to run that many?A I had always planned on running from London to

Cardiff to Belfast to Edinburgh and back down to London but I ran two marathons in two days and so I just kept on going like that. I did adjust the route I could have done it slightly quicker but I wanted to run through Swansea as I had spent some time there and I wanted to run past the Olympic village with 2012 being so close, I thought that was important. I didn’t announce it beforehand I just twittered when I started at Trafalgar Square to say what I was doing.

Q Do you still run? A Yes I do, I like running, swimming and football

Q You have been quite vocal with your support of the Labour Party, are we going to see Eddie Izzard as a future MP?

A Yes I hope to be elected as an MP or Mayor of London in 2020.

Q If you could have one wish come true what would it be?

A Free and fair elections in every country. Democracy in the world.

The groundbreaking open-air comedy festival is back bigger and better than last year. The comedy spectacular is being held at Verulamium Park from Friday, July 22 to Sunday, July 24. For further info visit www.laughsinthepark.com and for exclusive VIP tickets please contact Jo on 01273 204200

In the 1960’s Rolex gave its chronograph model a major facelift, introducing the Rolex Cosmograph. With its accuracy and unique ability to calculate the average lap speed of racing cars, the 1961 Rolex Cosmograph became known as the Daytona through its association with racing and the great track.

Paul Newman’s affiliation with the Rolex Daytona began with his appearance in the 1969 Indy Car racing film Winning in which he appeared to wear the model. Although Newman himself does not recall wearing this

specific Daytona in the motion picture, his 1973 appearance on the front cover of Italian magazine Moda, wearing what again appeared to be a Rolex Daytona, only went further in cementing his association with the model. Indeed, Paul Newman himself identifies that his appearance in Moda magazine may have been the catalyst for his lifetime association with the Daytona Model.

With a love affair stemming from his role in the film Winning, Newman’s racing

career began in 1972 and he made his first real public connection with the Rolex Daytona when his wife Joanne Woodward bought him a Rolex Daytona with the inscription ‘Drive Slowly, Joanne’ on its case. Upon stepping into the racing car Newman became a supreme driver. In 1995 Newman won the GT1 Class in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and in doing so was presented with a new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, featuring the inscription, ‘Rolex 24H at

Daytona, Paul Newman, Rolex Motorsport Man of the Year, 1995’. His ability as a driver and love for the sport even gained acclaim from champion racing driver Mario Andretti describing Newman as ‘one of us.’

Interestingly, unlike more modern actors and celebrities, although Newman wore this Rolex Daytona model for over 30 years, he never officially endorsed the model or publically endorsed Rolex as a brand. Thus, the term ‘Paul Newman Daytona’ was adopted by collectors and enthusiasts and has never been officially used by Rolex. Nevertheless, as a result of Paul Newman’s dedication to his career, his love for racing and indirect contribution to the legacy of Rolex the Paul Newman Stainless Steel Cosmograph Daytona is considered to be ‘the holy grail’ for serious watch collectors.

Women Exempt1800’s -

From the Royal AcademyCan you imagine a mere 150 years ago, it was considered too

shocking for women to display their artwork in London. Those who dared used pseudonyms, such was the potential scandal.

The Society of Women Artists has travelled a fascinating and exciting road since a few rebellious women formed their own society in 1857. The Society enjoyed public attention from the start, from both indulgent curiosity and the support of well chosen Patrons who gave prestige and generous backing to the pioneer artists.

In 1865, Royal Patronage followed and continues to this day, through HRH Princess Michael of Kent who will be opening the exhibition at the private view event on Wednesday 29th June.

Since these early days the society has grown into a highly competitive forum for women artists, and is constantly developing as a diverse and forward looking organisation.

This year, celebrates the 150th annual exhibition at the splendidly refurbished Mall Galleries where you can view the stunning and eclectic mix of artwork.

place Salon Privé, automobile royalty will be gracing the delicately manicured lawns of Syon House, West London, in a traditional

English garden party setting at the height of London’s summer social season.

Since Salon Privé’s debut in 2006, the event has grown in diversity and distinction, whilst retaining the intimacy and private garden party atmosphere that has become its trademark. A memorable spectacle of the event has always been the supercar lawn, where examples of the world’s most precious and impressive automotive metal is displayed for guests to get up close and personal with and 2011 is no different.

Salon Privé has grown to become one of the season’s most eagerly anticipated social events and an absolute ‘must’ for enthusiasts, collectors and buyers of modern and classic super & luxury cars. The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date.

However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description.

By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since.

enter the ladiesIn 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883.

Overseas ChampiOnsBy the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade.

Wartime WimbledOnDuring the Second World War the Club managed to remain open despite a severe curtailment of staff. The premises were used for a variety of civil defence and military functions such as fire and ambulance services, Home Guard and a decontamination unit. Troops stationed within the vicinity were allowed to use the main concourse for drilling. Another familiar sight around the ground was a small farmyard consisting of pigs, hens, geese, rabbits, etc. In October 1940 a ‘stick’ of five 500lb bombs struck Centre Court, resulting in the loss of 1,200 seats.

With the war in Europe over, signs of normality began to return to Wimbledon during June and July 1945, when a series of matches between Allied servicemen took place on the old No. 1 Court, which had escaped enemy action. Early in 1946 the

decision was taken to resume The Championships that summer. In more recent years long-standing records have been broken.

In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles.

Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year

gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years the momentum has increased and major works programmes have provided improved facilities for the players, spectators, officials and media.

Rafael Nadal triumph, a Kim Clijsters slice of history, the return of Roger Federer, or another rising star, but this year’s Wimbledon will also herald the opening of a new Show Court at the Church Road grounds in the form of the new Court 3.

“We are delighted to welcome a fantastic facility in the new Court 3, giving us four great stadium courts to play tennis in, all with Hawk-Eye electronic line calling” commented Championships Referee Andrew Jarrett.

The 2,000-seater construction has been built on the site of the old Court 2, ‘the graveyard of Champions’, and is nestled to the south of the Players’ balconies.

The design of the new Court 3 is very similar to that of Court 2, opened by the Duke of Kent in 2009. An unfurling concrete flower bowl, Court 3 is fitted with the new and improved padded green seats that feature on Centre Court and Court 2, and, with its high walls and enclosed setting, not to mention Hawk-Eye capabilities, is sure to provide an excellent atmosphere for both players and public.

“In fact, if you stand by Court 9, there is an optical illusion,” explains Jarrett. “Court 3 looks bigger than Court 2, even though Court 2 is twice the size, 4,000 seats, because it is sunk into the ground.”

There is of course another new court to be opened this summer, Court 4, which sits directly underneath the umbrella of Court 3. Like its bigger brother, Court 4 is in full view of both the Player Areas and also the Members balcony, making it another prime location for spectators.

Court 3 will be officially opened by the Duke of Kent, President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, ahead of the first scheduled match on Monday 20 June, the first day of The Championships. The Duke will perform the coin toss for the opening match, and unveil a commemorative plaque.

The grounds will open at 10:30am each day. On Courts 2–19 play is provisionally scheduled to start at noon for at least the first eight days and then at 11am for the Junior matches on the middle Saturday and during the second week.

On Centre and No.1 Courts play will start at 1pm, except on the final two days when play on these courts will start at 2pm. Please check the daily order of play.

LONDON 60’s WEEK

L ondon 60s Week is London’s only celebration of the

decade which rocketed London to the forefront of music, fashion, film & design, and coined the phrase “Swinging London”

The 60s was the decade when the youth successfully forged change. For the first time the youth of the day achieved freedom to play the music they wanted and break free from a class system which had total control over all the creative industries.

London 60s Week is the only celebration which acknowledges the power of generations to forge change. We tip our hats to those pioneers of the 60s and give the stage to the creative force of today’s new bands, designers & thinkers.

Things to watch out for during this year’s London 60s week include: Duffy “ A visual record of photographic genius” at the Idea Generation Gallery; John’s Children’s live at the Barfly; Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 classic “The Birds” screening at the BFI Southbank; Supreme Summer at the The Geffrye Museum in Shoreditch; 60s Shake’N’ at the Garage, Islington; the “Drifters” live at Fairfield Halls; Back in the day 60s Walk; and as always we end with “The Eel Pie All Stars” live at the Barmy Arms on Sunday 31 July, drawing the best vintage scooters and sharpest dressed Mods.

The first Proms concert took place on 10th August 1895 and was the brainchild of the impresario Robert Newman, manager of the newly

built Queen’s Hall in London. While Newman had previously organised symphony orchestra concerts at the hall, his aim was to reach a wider audience by offering more popular programmes, adopting a less formal promenade arrangement, and keeping ticket prices low.

The 100th Proms season took place in 1994 and the festival now includes over 70 main Prom concerts every year, ever widening the range of symphonic and operatic music presented. The BBC Proms continues to welcome leading international performers whilst showcasing the best of the British music scene, including the BBC’s own orchestras and choirs.

The BBC Proms are broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and many are broadcast on BBC television and all broadcasts are available via the BBC iPlayer for 7 days.

Seasoned enthusiast or complete newcomer, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed when faced with the fascinating variety of concerts that make up the BBC Proms 2011 season. There’s something to appeal to everyone, with 74 concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, 12 Chamber Proms at Cadogan Hall plus numerous other special events to choose from. The Proms Plus series incorporates over seventy events -

talks, films, family events and more. A further highlight of the season is the world-famous Last Night of the Proms, bringing the season to a spectacular end on Saturday 10th September with celebrations taking places across the UK.

The Last Night of the Proms, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, is one of the most popular classical music concerts in the world, watched and listened to by an audience of many millions around the globe.

While it lives up to its reputation of a fun Last Night party celebrating British tradition, it equally encapsulates the spirit of the Proms, with leading

international artists and an all-embracing programme, introducing new works alongside much-loved classics and bringing together the different themes of the season. This year Edward Gardner leads the festivities for the first time, conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with starring roles for pianist Lang Lang and soprano Susan Bullock.

For every English polo player, and indeed for the greatest names in the sport worldwide, the Coronation Cup – the feature match on Cartier International Day at Guards Polo Club – remains the most

coveted event to play in during the English polo season. This is the day when the polo fields

of English summer enjoy full bloom, infused with a spice of glamour, celebrity and royal patronage.

This year, the Hurlingham Polo Association, the sport’s governing body in the UK, will be celebrating the centenary of the Coronation Cup. Of course, the Cup has not been played for in every one of these 100 years – two world wars saw to that – but it has been one of the most famous matches in global polo over the last 10 decades. In fact today, the Cartier International Day is considered the world’s largest spectator polo event, attracting more than 20,000

like it anywhere in the world. No event can claim those sorts of numbers, and when you get a great, close match, and the crowd in those stands gets behind you, the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is the biggest game in the world. We love that as players. There’s no greater feeling.”

Alan Kent, another England stalwart, who has also coached the England team, says: “My memories of Coronation Cup are either adulation and joy, or complete demoralisation. It’s all or nothing, highs and lows. But win or lose, you cannot help looking back on every match you played in, or were involved in, with a deep sense of pride.”

The Coronation Cup is framed by Cartier International Day, which has become a late summer addition to the social sporting calendar. The event slots in alongside Henley, Wimbledon, Ascot and the Lord’s

f e a t u r e

The Biggest Game in the Worldpeople to Guards Polo Club, set in the heart of Windsor Great Park. This year the England polo team will play a hugely talented Brazilian team for the trophy. England polo team captain Luke Tomlinson, who has worn the skipper’s armband since 2006 says: “It’s always a great occasion to be involved in. To play for your country, and to be captain, is a high honour in any sport. It’s always a great feeling to go out there and play in front of a huge home crowd. As players, it means so much to us.”

Andrew Hine, a former captain of England, and now the England team coach, believes the match day has a flavour like no other. “You can play in the Argentine Open in Palermo, Buenos Aires, which for many is the Mecca of the sport, with the noise and 5,000 people on top of you; but when you play at Guards Polo Club in The Coronation Cup, and you hear the roar of 25,000 people, there is nothing

Test match. The Day itself offers two outstanding polo games – the Coronation Cup in the afternoon and a morning game – showcasing up-and-coming English talent – for the Golden Jubilee Trophy. In addition to this first-class sport on the field, the day provides some fantastic hospitality opportunities, including the chance to spend the day – and the evening – in the Chinawhite marquee. Chinawhite has been the post match party provider for the past 10 years and this year has invited the legendary producer Mark Ronson and Axwell from the Swedish House Mafia to be the guest DJs during the evening.

If a quieter afternoon is needed, then Keith Prowse offers a more relaxed lunch and afternoon tea option in their marquee, situated within the Smith’s Lawn Enclosure, close to the Cartier Marquee. Cartier announced earlier this year that this will be their last year of sponsorship of this high-goal event – after 27 years – as they will be sponsoring Guards Polo Club’s Queen’s Cup tournament from 2012. The Cartier Marquee guest list is always impressive, with an array of stars from the world of film, television and music. With renowned chef Anton Mosimann and his team

providing a delicious menu and John Carter creating the breathtaking floral displays, a Cartier Marquee invitation is always one to treasure.

If a more relaxed picnic with friends is what is needed then the Club has arranged for Foreman and Field, its official picnic suppliers, to create a special Cartier International Day menu which can be delivered to you at home or can be collected at the Club on the day. In addition, Guards Polo Club creates an extensive shopping village, offering everything from Audis – an appropriate venue for them as they are the sponsors of the England team – to Pommery Champagne.

In fact, there are so many stalls that you will need to keep an eye on the time to make sure that you don’t miss the match. And if the games have inspired you to take up the sport, you can leave the Club with all the necessary kit (apart from the ponies) ready for your first chukka. La Martina has a stand within the trade village and the doors will also be open in their permanent shop at Guards, situated alongside the Royal Box.

Ok, so the HPA still has to name its England squad that will take to the field on Cartier International Day to play Brazil in this year’s Coronation Cup. But whoever they select to play – be it experienced international players like Luke’s younger brother Mark Tomlinson or new members of the England squad such as seven-goaler Satnam Dhillon, all the team will wear their England shirts with pride.

The same can be said of everyone attending the 2011 Cartier International Day. Whether you have a coveted Cartier invitation or are coming to spend the day at the Club with friends, family, and a picnic, the day will surely provide many lasting memories? Ensure that you are part of polo history in the making and book your tickets now.

The flower show sold out in record time this year, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming. Year on year, garden designers at

the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint. The talking point this year has to be Diarmuid Gavin’s hanging, Irish Sky Garden, with its pink planted pod suspended high above the ground, overlooking his inspired horticultural creation. Glad to report that finally, the man whom is often wrongly overlooked in terms of metallic praise, finally managed to bag a well deserved Gold for his ingenious creation. It is inspired by Dublin animator Richie Baneham who created the visual effects work in Avatar and by the concept of Restaurant in the Sky where people dine sitting around a table hanging from the arm of a crane.

In terms of sheer originality, none can top Diarmuid. Nonetheless, most of the show gardens showed off interesting novel design ideas, such as planted walls, and the odd luxury swimming pool, common to most Monaco backyards. The latter, certainly of appeal to the increasingly hot, sun drenched Chelsea punters, eagerly pushing forward through the crowds, to catch a glimpse of the horticultural extravaganza.

The show gardens always dominate the media

headlines, though it is often noted it is the Great Pavilion that represents true Chelsea. The skill of nurseries exhibit to such a high standard, with such attention to detail irrespective of the respective natural flowering seasons.

The exhibits ranged from a modern take on a kitchen garden, a plot with the largest trees ever to be brought in to Chelsea framing a working water mill, to gardens which evoke1940s Wales or renewable power and even a Korean entry which makes a toilet the central feature. It may seem unusual, but the traditional Korean belief that emptying your body also means cleansing your mind has led to it becoming the centrepiece. Even the pathway to the toilet is significant, as the process of emptying your mind starts with the walk through the centre of the peaceful garden. Jihae Hwang, who is believed to be the first South Korean garden designer to exhibit at Chelsea, described the gardens as a personal quest for relaxation. She said: ‘I wanted the audience to feel that they are stress free and when they see the garden they want to empty their minds of worries.

Elsewhere, floral displays include the annual Florist of the Year competition in which entrants have designed floral jockey silks, while a £70,000, 11ft 6in high sculpture of a cypress tree covered in 23.5 carat gold dominates the grand pavilion of the show.

Crowds were gathering to catch a small glimpse of Saint Alan Titchmarch in the TV tower. According to one of the fruit growers exhibiting in the Great Pavilion, just one squeak from the man about a certain plant, makes the cash registers rattle with rage!

HRH Queen Elizabeth II made her annual pilgrimage to check out the latest floral creations on VIP Day. Other members of the royal family in attendance were Prince Philip, the Duke of York and his daughter Princess Beatrice (fresh from auctioning off her striking wedding day fascinator hat on eBay), as well as the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Celebrities in attendance included Gwyneth Paltrow, who was busy promoting her new cookery book ‘Notes >From My Kitchen Table’ at B&Q’s show garden. The collaboration focused on ‘growing your own’ food and Gwyneth fittingly posed in front of the tallest structure ever at Chelsea - a glass tower block-like building complete with window boxes full of vegetables.

Veteran actress Vanessa Redgrave attended the event with her daughter Joely Richardson, who organised the launch of a rose named after her late sister Natasha. The UK-grown rose, which will be sold exclusively at Dobbies Garden Centres around the UK, aims to raise £10,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, the charity which grants magical

wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. Her mother Vanessa said: ‘Natasha’s family, her husband and her boys, are so happy that the Natasha Richardson rose was on view to rose lovers at Chelsea Flower Show.Joely added: ‘Natasha was a keen gardener and would be honoured to have a rose created in her memory. Pink was her favourite colour and so we chose this particular rose which is incredibly feminine and joyous, it captures her extreme vitality.’ Dame Helen Mirren attended to give her name to a new plant in aid of charity. The Nepenthes Helen is a carnivorous jungle plant that eats rats.

There was the shoe designer Jimmy Choo, bubbly Barbara Windsor and members of the boy band JLS, throwing themselves good naturedly into the floral arranging competition with only one brief lesson beforehand.

The Daily Telegraph Garden, designed by Cleve West, was awarded gold and has been given the accolade of Best Show Garden. This is a stunning hat trick of Best in Show awards for The Daily Telegraph.

Among the gold winning highlights, Diarmuid Gavin achieved his first gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for his Irish Sky Garden. The judging panel awarded a total of eight gold medals, five silver - gilt flora medals and silver flora medals in the show garden category.

In the Urban Garden category, eight gardens were awarded medals - three gold; four silver-gilt and two silver medals. The Best Urban Garden 2011 title went to Stockton Drilling Ltd, with Lands’ End and Worcester Bosch gardens also winning gold.

The Best Artisan Garden accolade and a gold medal were awarded to the Hae-woo-so (Emptying One’s Mind) garden. Other awards in this category are one other gold, one silver – gilt, three silvers and a bronze.

In the Great Pavilion, right at the heart of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where world class nurseries exhibit a vast range of top quality plants, there were over 100 medals awarded, of which

56 were gold. The President’s Award in the Great Pavilion was awarded to Crug Farm Plants, Gwynedd

Four gold medals were awarded in the Continuous Learning category in the Great Pavilion, with Sparsholt College being awarded gold and Best Continuous Learning Exhibit.

In the first session of the Floral Arrangement Awards a total of nineteen awards were presented including four gold medals.

very year from May Day right through to late September,

most weekends see the Brocket Hall Estate clouded in confetti.

Glamorous, historic and full of intrigue, it’s not difficult to

see why this magical country estate in Hertfordshire is such a popular choice with Brides and Grooms-to-be, now and throughoutthe year.

The Brocket Hall Estate houses not one, not two but three beautiful

and unique wedding venues on site, suitable for all seasons. Brocket Hall itself – the grand yet elegant 18th Century Stately Home, the Golf Club – a traditional and relaxed venue complete with picturesque views across the Estate, and the charming Auberge du Lac – Hertfordshire’s only Michelin Star restaurant. Each supplying their own character and “wow” factor, these distinct locations offer an extensive choice of rooms fitting the size and scale of almost every guest-list.

For those who dream of a magnificent Ballroom and long, sweeping staircase – Brocket Hall provides just that and can be hired totally and exclusively by wedding couples. Civil ceremonies can be held in the Boardroom, accommodating a

maximum of 150 guests, or for smaller services, the beautiful Library seats 50, and provides magnificent views across the Estate.

The Wedding Breakfast is traditionally served in the Ballroom, while guests gaze at the beautiful hand painted ceiling depicting the signs of the Zodiac. The Boardroom can be quickly turned around to make way for a disco, allowing guests to party late into the night and overnight accommodation in one of Brocket Hall’s 30 luxurious en-suite bedrooms rounds off a perfect day.

The Golf Club at Brocket Hall provides a more traditional and relaxed atmosphere, with civil ceremonies and wedding receptions both

being held in the magnificent Oak Room. A vast room filled with natural light, this oak-beamed vision can comfortably seat 120 guests and provides panoramic views across the estate. To end such a special day, overnight accommodation is available in the converted stable block, Melbourne Lodge.

Last but by no means least, Auberge du Lac, once the Estate’s hunting lodge, and now an internationally acclaimed Michelin-starred restaurant, is most definitely a wedding venue for the admirers of fine cuisine. Beautifully elegant, Auberge du Lac sits on the banks of the Broadwater Lake, set amongst 543 acres of tranquillity. Capable of seating 60 guests for a civil

Coutureexperience trueO n April 29th 2011, the nation

watched expectantly for Kate Middleton to emerge from the Goring Hotel to give the first glimpse

of the much debated wedding dress. The designer Louise Marie, from Radlett, was one of the many people who had speculated on the style of the dress. She waited, with sketchbook in-hand, ready to start work immediately on her own interpretation of the dress and to give every bride the opportunity to feel like the princess that Kate Middleton was about to become.

Louise decided to take on the challenge of interpreting the wedding dress, Pippa Middleton’s dress and the dress worn in the evening by Kate, all intented for future brides or transformed into colour for stunning evening wear. Louise and her team of local skilled seamstresses and beaders worked tirelessly for three weeks to create her royal collection. The results were revealed for the first time with an evening of champagne to celebrate the collection.

The dresses were created from the finest silks: silk Gazaar sourced from Italy, corded French lace, silk crepe Morocain and encrusted swarovski crystal beading. As with all Louise Marie dresses, they are corseted and with a secondary internal corset to enhance the shape, fit and comfort. Hours of hand sewing put the finishing touches of lace edging and beading to the dresses.

Although Louise believes Kate Middleton’s dress will not create a step change in the fashion of bridal wear, in the way Diana’s dress did, she feels it will be influential in specific areas of dresses. The current trend for lace will continue, statement details such as the beaded band on her evening dress all with 50’s glamour style and sophistication. Cowl necks influenced by Pippas dress will be popular on different dress silohettes to enhance every figure and shape.

Louise’s showroom is in Radlett where she has been for nearly twelve years. A sumptuous and tranquil environment awaits in which to choose your wedding gown. Around thirty of Louise’s designs adorn the rails to be browsed through and experienced. You will be the only bride in the showroom for the duration of your appointment, having Louise’s undivided attention. Louise prides herself on seeing all her

brides from their initial appointment to the final fitting, enabling her to advise and guide brides through the complete process. Louise will design with brides whilst trying on the gowns, changing necklines, skirt sizes and silohettes to suit or even designing from brides ideas and sketching out the final design.

Louise is one of few who still offer a truely couture experience. All the gowns are made to fit the individual bride with toile fittings, which are mock ups of the dress, through to hem fittings and the all important final fitting to ensure everything is perfect. Every dress is hand finished to the highest standard using the finest silks and beading available and with highly

skilled seamstresses making dreams come true.

Below her showroom is the workroom where all the dresses are made and Louise prides herself in keeping the construction of all her gowns British. Skilled in every aspect of the construction of the gowns, Louise oversees all the work and, if time allows, loves to get back to basics and get on the sewing machine herself.

For more information aboutLouise Marie call 01923 850472 or visit the website atwww.louisemarie.co.uk.

Chef Steven Kitchen: set up camp at the 7th tee, fully equipped with gazebo, gas fired pot, chopping board and fresh ingredients. As golfers turned the corner they were greeted with the fabulous show-time experience that is Steven Kitchen.

THE THAI BROTH

Thai Soup was bursting with fresh scallops, prawns and chicken. Galangal, chilli and tongue-tingling delights made this an amazing start to the 7th tee experience. As each team approached Steven prepared a fresh batch of broth. Steven is no stranger to cooking outside. When the shooting

season is underway he can be found out in the fields of Hertfordshire rustling up amazing rustic cuisine for the shooting elite. As a private Chef, he is also available to come to your home and cook for you, your family, events or dinner parties.

Chef Steven Kitchen is certainly not a fiery type, his warm personality and sparkly sense of humour comes through brilliantly in his sketches which form the basis of his new brand. Steven loves food and is keen to help impart his knowledge. Currently he holds cookery classes for people in the comfort of their own home. Using whatever you have available, he is resourceful and creative. He plans to create his own studio where people can come and learn – keep an eye out for details of his cookery school on his website www.stevenkitchen.co.uk

Another string to Steven’s bow is corporate team building cookery days. Recently he ran a day for Grosvenor Wealth Management. Employees learnt how to prepare and cook their own exquisite dinner.

“The cookery day with Steven was excellent and very relaxed. We had a great time learning new skills and having a laugh together; not to mention the fantastic food that followed! Steven is relaxed, clear and patient and keeps the day moving at a comfortable pace for everyone.”

Back on the course golfers were overwhelmed with their Thai broth which was enjoyed whilst watching the team in front attempt to win themselves a brand new Saab, albeit unsuccessfully, but hey there is always next year.

A SPLASH OF REAL ALE

Upon finishing the 9th hole players were welcomed by a bar set up by The Cricketers of Redbourn with the Tring brewery beer “Side Pocket for a Toad”. The sun had been shining, the play competitive and thirsts were definitely in need of quenching.

So much so, a time sheet had materialised and some cracking times for pints were recorded. Is there anyone out there who thinks they can better 3.5 seconds for next year? Strategically the bar was brilliantly placed as punters could watch the team in front of them attempt the longest drive competition.

Redbourn Golf Club is an excellent course for such a golf day. The staff are exceptionally helpful and the management very accommodating. The course marshal was heard to say he may be in favour of participating himself next year.

As players sauntered in from the 18th Steven Kitchen had been hard at work again creating a platter of beer suited canapés so the “Side pocket for a toad” did not go to waste.

CANAPéS MENU

Hog roast and apple in a mini bun, gazpacho shot topped with crab, Moroccan chicken kebabs with coriander yoghurt, spice meatballs and crab & smoked salmon cones with orange vinaigrette.

The fabulous day was organised by Beccy and Karen from FABusiness Marketing. Banter was certainly put into golf, many good scores were recorded (arguably aided by mulligan’s) and the profit went to Willow Foundation, the chosen charity for 2011.

“Thank you all for a great day yesterday. You had thought of everything and were very generous. It was lots of fun, and Steven’s food was an extra special treat.”

Penny mCADAm

Steven Kitchen is an amazing chef, refreshingly resourceful and a brilliant teacher. The golf day really demonstrated that what-ever challenge is set before him he will create and deliver the perfect dish for the occasion.

U p there with brushing your pearly whites, cleansing is the twice-daily habit that should

never be neglected. While the ‘cleanse, tone and moisturise’ mantra covers the basics, everyone needs an individual routine they can stick to religiously so their skin reaps the benefits. OK, you might fall off the wagon every so often and employ a quick face wipe or leave your make-up imprinted on your pillow but, for enviable skin, it’s worth committing to good cleansing habits.

“Your regime plays a serious key function in skin maintenance,” explains Noella Gabriel, director of product development at Elemis. “It’s the key to skin radiance and aids the absorption of your neck, eye and face creams.” So don’t view cleansing as a chore like the washing-up or dusting. View this cleanse and polish as the building blocks for a flawless face.

Skin Savvy

Never make the mistake of plucking a cleansing bottle from the shelves just because you like the price or colour. Your skin should always be top priority. “It’s very important that at the cleansing stage you are using a treatment cleanser that has the right texture for your skin type,” says Gabriel. While oil cleansers work best on the driest of skins, soaps specifically formulated for the face are suitable for oily types. Stick to a gel cleanser if you have oily or combination skin that’s prone to breakouts, or a lightweight cream cleanser is best suited to normal to dry skin types. Look for ingredients like wheat germ oil, which

cleanses without stripping your skin, and glycerine, which attracts moisture to the skin’s surface to give you a hydrated glow.

RiSe and Shine

You might think that after a good night’s sleep there’s no need for another thorough cleanse in the morning. Think again. The secret to good skin maintenance and squeaky clean skin is a twice-daily cleanse. Applying make-up on top of grimy skin in a no-go. “In general, I advise cleansing morning and night,” says Dr Sue Mayou, consultant dermatologist and Neutrogena advisor. The action of cleansing mildly exfoliates and encourages cell turnover to promote a fresh-faced look to start your day.

“Cleansing is important to remove

make-up, oil, dirt and other impurities from your skin,” Mayou explains. “The mechanical action of rubbing the skin with hands, a face cloth or cotton wool helps remove dead surface skin cells and unclog pores, leaving it smoother and more radiant.” Incorporate a facial massage into your morning routine as you cleanse to relax the facial muscles and give your skin a smooth and lifted look for the day ahead.

night-time tonic

Whether you’re addicted to your make-up brushes or not, the most thorough cleanse regime should always be before bed. “Cleansing properly every night is the single most important thing you can do for your skin,” says Samantha Burlton, founder of So Organic

eye do

Kate Middleton’s wedding vows are

catching. Britain’s women are saying ‘Eye do’ to anti-ageing. The eye

area is our top ageing concern, according to a new survey of 2,000 women by the makers of RoC

Sublime Energy Eye. Puffy eyes and dark circles (45%) and fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (48%) are ranked as two of our top three ageing concerns, along with sagging skin (55%). Just over a quarter (29%) of women surveyed use a dedicated eye cream on a daily basis, as opposed to 80% who use a face cream daily.

“Removing grime

and make-up before going to bed

allows skin to breathe and enables your skin’s natural

night-time renewal process to work as it should.” Skin that’s free from pollutants and

make-up can work on restoring its natural balance during your shut-eye time. Burlton recommends using a muslin flannel to achieve a deep clean feeling. “Muslins are a great way to save money as you can wash and reuse them, unlike cotton wool, and the gentle exfoliating action might mean you can drop a product from your routine too,” she says.

cleanSe cleveR

A thorough cleanse should last for at least a minute, and some experts now recommend ‘double cleansing’ for a deeper wash. Bobbi Brown offers this step-by-step guide to the perfect cleanse:

Secure hair off the face with a headband or elastic.

When wearing make-up, it’s often necessary to cleanse using a

multi-step process. Start with a make-up remover or tissue-off cream to dissolve much of the make-up, avoiding the eye area. Use a make-up remover especially formulated for the eyes. Take a cotton pad dampened with the product, and rest or press it gently around the closed eye. Wipe gently. Don’t tug or pull on the eye or surrounding skin.

Apply cleanser to the entire face. With a cleanser appropriate to your skin type, massage the product into your face with an upward circular motion. Include the neck and chin.

Rinse the entire face, including the eye area with warm - not hot - water.

Pat the face dry with the softest natural-fibre towels you can find.

Diana Pilkington tries out the ultimate pampering experience at the

Lifehouse in Essex. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice available at a health spa. Happily, the signature treatment at Lifehouse, the Oriental Bathing Experience, crams so much into two hours it ticks lots of boxes in one go. Promising the ‘ultimate in relaxation’, it’s inspired by the traditionof the Oriental bath house. And as soon as I slipped on my bathrobe andentered the first dimly-lit room I felt as if I had been transported to an exotic oasis. A kimono-clad therapist took me through several stages of pampering in various spa spaces. A heavenly foot massage got the ball rolling, whilea full body exfoliation scrubbed away the last of my winter skin.

There were also two pools to soak in along the way. The first complete with optional powerful jets - very welcome after a gruelling session with the in-house fitness expert earlier that day. The second was so luxuriously warm I could have easily nodded off were it not for my therapist handing me a soothing jasmine tea. Now fully de-stressed, I drifted

over to another room, where I was doused in essential oils and treated to a hot stone massage.

Finally, I was escorted to an individual sleep pod. The huge window overlooking the pool meant sleep was out of the question, but the vast comfy bed was the perfect place to lie in a zombified, and thoroughly relaxed, state. Bliss. And my skin felt pretty good too.

with 25 years experience, she is the semi-permanent make-up genius who changes the lives of celebrities by revitalising and enhancing their look. Together with her team of specialists and revolutionary treatments, Tracey devises a complete treatment plan to get that youthful and natural look you are hoping for.

Semi-permanent make-up can change your life!

Want to change your look, freshen up, look well rested and ultimately look younger?

With an arch of the brow your look will be transformed from dated to on-trend and open eyed therefore giving the impression of fresh faced youthfulness. It’s time for a brow re-model.

“Semi-permanent make-up has taken a complete turn, gone are the days of the half moon shape slapped above the eye, we have so many different types of fantastic and natural looking ways to enhance your eyebrow shape from fine hair line strokes to simply filling in patchy eyebrows with a shadow effect. I can create a totally realistic and natural arched brow for both men and women!”

As you get older the shape of your face changes and it is very important to move with the times, it’s amazing how many women still over pluck their eyebrows into the shape they had in the nineties or even eighties. The area becomes over traumatised therefore making it impossible to achieve that full lush look you had in your 20’s. As the brows are such

an important part of the total impression of your look it is only smart to seek advice from a specialist in this area. The brows frame the eyes and can be the making of you, they should be well shaped but above all suit the shape of your face and expressions.

Semi-permenant make-up is the answer to all your brow dilemma’s

Semi-permenant make-up can create a new look, it is so natural they will look like your own

LIP LINERThe common procedure most of you know about is the lip liner, which defines the outer lip and gives the impression of a fuller lip as if you were wearing a lip pencil liner.

Lip blush is the new lip line! This treatment is fantastic on more mature lips and

anyone who has thin lips and would like a fuller sexy looking lip. As you get older the pigment of the lips fades, with this procedure that youthful blush is restored. The colour of your lip is matched to your complexion and the results are lip transforming!

It sounds a little uncomfortable as the entire lip is tattooed, however my specialist Dr Harris applies a dental block so you will be totally pain free.

The common question and fear my clients have is “will I get the trout pout?” My answer is emphatically no, no and no again. I concentrate on bringing out your own natural attractiveness and inner beauty, I do not (unless the client is a celebrity and trying to achieve a different look) believe in enforcing an over exaggerated look. I like my clients to achieve an improved and youthful look which is natural and complements their character and lifestyle.

Well this should give you plenty to think about, feel like a change and know you need an overhaul. Make a booking today.

Until next month, stay well and get ready for the summer!Tracey x

i t’s that time of year again when we all get body conscious in anticipation of our summer holidays and the parts of our body

we may be forced to reveal. There is a lot more pressure to be slim and in good shape these days and this pressure encourages many of our clients to look for alternative treatments to combine with diet and exercise for fast results.

In reality, no matter how much you diet and exercise you cannot spot-reduce the areas that concern you most. Liposuction is the only way to remove fat cells from specific areas but it does have its own side-effects and recovery time can be long.

We live in a world that is fast-paced and busy and the majority of my clients are extremely short on time. So in response to the many requests I receive, I have researched all of the latest non-surgical treatments which claim to give results similar to surgical procedures without the downtime associated with surgery.

Until recently, I was unable to find anything that could achieve similar results to surgery. But finally, earlier this year, I discovered I Lipo, a ‘laser liposuction’ treatment that offers long-term, non-invasive and pain free body reshaping when combined with a healthy diet and exercise regime. I Lipo has been used in Aesthetic clinics around the world with great success, supporting clients in reducing specifically chosen or

troublesome fat storage areas on the body.

Prior to an I Lipo treatment, the client undergoes a thorough medical consultation and is then weighed and measured by their therapist. The treatment itself is painless and comfortable. Four large laser pads are placed on the chosen areas and two small laser pads are used to stimulate the lymphatic system.

During I Lipo treatment, a low level laser stimulates the fat cells to release stored triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. Once outside the fat cell, they are transported by the lymphatic system, thus introducing the contents of the fat cell into the blood supply. These fatty acids and glycerol are then taken up and turned back into triglyceride molecules and stored by the fat cells again unless burned by the body as energy. It is therefore extremely important that exercise is performed within 24 hours of a treatment in order to use up the freed triglycerides as energy before they are reabsorbed by the body and converted back to fat.

Immediately post treatment, overall fat volume is reduced causing immediate and measurable results compared to reduction in measurements taken prior to the treatment. If cardiovascular exercise is carried out for at least 30-45 minutes after treatment, this reduction - which averages between two and five centimetres from any one

area of the body - will remain and will increase with continued treatment.

I Lipo can be used to treat all stubborn areas of fat including the stomach, upper arms, legs, double chins and fat on the upper back.

The Anti Ageing Clinic offers a comprehensive range of beauty, anti ageing and aesthetic treatments and products. As well as the new I Lipo

treatment, the Clinic also offers a selection of other specialist treatments, including Dermaroller, Harley Body Wraps and

Applisonix which are unavailable elsewhere locally.

C heryl Cole should actually be on top of the world right now, a new survey has discovered she has the body most women covet. A new survey conducted

by Liberate, the UK’s largest network of BAAPS* and/or BAPRAS**-accredited cosmetic surgeons, reveals that Cheryl Cole has the body that most women want! Liberate, which has over 60 locations across the UK, surveyed 3000 women between the ages of 18-34 and found that just fewer than 30% of women would most like their body to look like Cheryl Cole. PussyCat Doll’s Nicole Scherzinger was in second place (19%) and Angelina Jolie & Rhianna tied in third place with 15% of the vote for the most desirable female celebrity body. Although recently voted by People Magazine US as the world’s most beautiful woman, surprisingly Jennifer Lopez received only 10% of the vote and Victoria Beckham only 4%.

The survey also found that 30% of women had undergone cosmetic surgery with breast augmentation (“boob job”) being the most popular procedure (28%) followed by Nose (17%) eyes (11%) and Liposuction/tummy tuck (15%).

Half the women surveyed would have cosmetic surgery if cost was no object but only a small percentage (17%) would take out a loan to cover this.

The Liberate survey also highlights the need for women to be better informed of the dangers of cosmetic surgery abroad or in the wrong hands. Despite recent deaths following botched surgery abroad, a staggering 40% admitted that they would consider having surgery abroad if it was cheaper.

Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon Mr Jonathan Staiano, Liberate, remarked:

‘Cosmetic surgery is a field in which there are many practitioners who rely on glossy marketing and promotion rather than medical and surgical qualifications. Liberate stands for a group of highly qualified plastic surgeons whose reputations are far more important than encouraging patients to have unnecessary or unsafe surgery. We encourage patients to seek second and third opinions and to research your surgeon before allowing him or her to operate on you.’

Without the tools needed to make responsible choices cosmetic surgery can end up costing people financially, physically and psychologically, Liberate aims to give people the power to choose, providing them with a new and safer approach to cosmetic surgery.

A nd there’s good reason to be cautious if you want to invest in your looks and well-being. “Harsh UVA and UVB rays can wreak

havoc on all skin types, making it essential for you to give your skin the best defences against harmful rays,” warns skincare expert Liz Earle.

While it’s good news that sun awareness has surged, it also means that beauty shelves are now stacked with even more varieties of sun protection potions - and consumers can be left confused by information overload. So if you’re feeling flustered by SPFs and all those formulations, here’s some expert advice about sunbathing safely with beauty in mind.

Q What are the basics I need to look for on my suncare bottle?

A “You need a suncare product that offers balanced, broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) and photostable protection,” advises Dr Nathalie Issachar of Johnson & Johnson suncare.

“Everyone’s skin is different and reacts differently in the sun, it’s important you choose an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) that is suitable for your skin type and sun destination. For example, if you have light hair, are fair with slightly freckly skin, you will be more sensitive to the sun and require a product with a very high SPF such as 50-plus.”tRy...

Q Does daily sun protection overload and aggravate the skin?

A “No, as long as you choose wisely,” says dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe.

“Check labels for benzophenone, oxybenzone and PABAs, as these ingredients can cause sensitivity in some skin types. If you have sensitive skin, you may be less likely to react to other sunscreen ingredients. Steer clear of the more greasy, ‘heavy’ sunscreens, which can cause or worsen acne.”

Q How can I accelerate my golden glow but still stay protected?

A “Look for a product to help stimulate the natural melanin production,” says Sally Lewis, head of product development at St Tropez.

A “There is constant investment to produce new innovations in suncare,” says Julie McManus, scientific advisor to Garnier Ambre Solaire.

“We know that creating an everyday sun protection habit really depends on having products that are easy and a pleasure to use. Look for a clear or light spray that offers easily absorbed, non-greasy protection. These formulations are particularly popular with men who are often deterred from applying sun cream because they feel it leaves white marks.”

Q What kind of product should I look for to suit sensitive skin?

A: If you have sensitive skin, use a cream-based product,” suggests make-up artist Bobbi Brown.

“Avoid sunscreens with tretinoin (Retin-A, Stieva-A, Retisol-A, Rejuva-A, Renova, Vitamin A acid), which dries the skin. Look for a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic sunscreen if you have any allergies to skin products.”

Filthy Gorgeous Gelish pedicure £55 for one hourDebenhams Oxford Street, London.

There are so many things to remember before a holiday but one thing I won’t be forgetting in future is a Gelish pedicure. With a couple of weeks planned in the sun, I could rest assured there would be no unsightly chips, knocks or peeling with this hard-wearing toenail polish. Unlike other pedicures, there isn’t a foot soak with the Gelish pedicure at Filthy Gorgeous as the gel (which resembles a thick nail polish) has to be applied to dry feet.

With a range of colours to choose from, I opted for a summery coral that would match lots of my clothing - the polish can last up to six weeks. The friendly therapist at Filthy Gorgeous did a great job of removing all my excess cuticles so that the Gelish had a smooth base to cling to.

After the first application of gel, one foot is popped to dry under a UV lamp for under a minute and then swapped with the other foot until both feet are complete with two coats.

There’s no drying time as the UV light creates a hard, glossy finish, meaning you can put your shoes straight on and dash. Throughout my holiday and beyond, I was amazed at the Gelish’s longevity. It was a sad moment when I booked in for a ‘soak-off ’ five weeks later to have the gel removed professionally with acetone.

Ways with wallsForget paint, wallpaper is where it’s at For stylish, individual homes - but the choice is so vast it could drive you wild! experts oFFer their wisdom For wrapping up walls. by gabrielle Fagan

Personal PrintThere are plenty of amazing papers available, but new technology means you can create a special design just for your home.

Kate Kingston says advances in digital printing mean designers and manufacturers work with homeowners to create stunning, one-off wall art.

“We have found that bespoke wall coverings are becoming increasingly desirable to our clients,” she says. “They appreciate the exclusivity that a unique design delivers.”

Kingston Shaw recently created a bachelor pad in a penthouse apartment in Liverpool’s prestigious One Park West development, using bespoke wall coverings.

The company’s designers collaborated with Digetex, using its digital printing process to make a custom-fitted “alluring eyes” image that matched the dimensions

of the wall to the millimetre. They hung a mirrored

wallpaper design from Osborne & Little on the ceiling as a contemporary nod to the bachelor pads of the 1970s, then created a digitally printed dartboard wall covering, topped with a competition dartboard.

Digetex have a range of imaginative wall-covers including their Dickens Bookcase wallpaper mural that mimics shelves full of books and starts from £129. Other wallpapers start from around £20 and bespoke digital prints from £180.Top tip: Digital printing means you can blow up a personal image that you love - even one from your life - and hang it on your wall, says Kingston.

She adds: “If it’s your own personal photo I’d advise having it enlarged first and pinning it on the wall to decide if it’s really suitable to be seen day after day.”

touchy feelyDramatic wall treatments may not be to everyone’s taste, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a wallpaper out there to suit your home.

If you’re nervous at the thought of covering your walls in bold designs, Kingston suggests going for texture rather than pattern.

“To avoid that oppressive feeling of a busy patterned paper on all four walls, create a focal point by choosing a feature wall and painting the others in sympathetic neutrals,” she advises.

“Using a textured wallpaper will add interest to a wall, without allowing the design to dominate.”

There aren’t any rules about where to hang your chosen wallpaper. “Get creative,” says Kingston. “Wallpaper can be hung on the ceiling or pasted on panels. Or you could try it in strips or geometric shapes on top of neutral painted walls to add warmth and depth.”

House Couturier has a stunning range of papers including a Quilter Lacquer wallcovering, from £98 a linear metre, and its Glam Grass metallic paper woven wallcovering, handcrafted in Japan, which has a shimmering effect, starts at £74 a linear metre.

Top tip: Wallpaper hanging methods have changed. These days you usually paste the wall, not the paper. But Kingston says it’s important to always line walls before hanging your chosen wallpaper to ensure a smooth, professional finish.

full-on floralsFlower prints and patterns never go out of fashion but interpretation of nature’s

blooms is ongoing, and ensures there’s always a fresh look to pick from.

“Floral designs have come straight off the catwalk this spring. There is a hot trend for smaller floral designs,” says Paula Taylor, colour specialist at Graham & Brown.

“Larger floral prints are mixed and matched with smaller botanicals to create a co-ordinated look.

“Colour combinations are bold and striking with multi-coloured flower heads and big traditional bouquets hand-painted with watercolours and bold block colours for an eclectic twist.”

Pretty blooms feature on the company’s Lacework and Passion Lily papers, £30 a roll, and its Superfresco collection, from £20 a roll, also has attractive prints.

Little Greene’s Fifties

Line Papers collection, from £38 a roll, features beautiful floral designs and, unusually, others inspired by herbs. Papers £44.50 a roll.Top tip: Great floral colour combinations include purple and fresh greens, midnight blues with teals, reds with greys, and yellows with fresh greens and taupes.

track a trendKingston says wallpaper and wall art trends often follow catwalk fashion, but nowadays leading design brands are even expanding their ranges to include wall coverings.

“It’s a sure sign of the growth, popularity and staying power of wallpaper that luxury brands are also entering the wall covering market,” says Kingston.

French brand Hermes, famous for its silk scarves,

launched a small selection of wall coverings in March, starting from around £120 a roll.

Swarovski has just unveiled its opulent wallpaper range, which has the appearance of antique gilded glass with each rectangular pane fixed with a cluster of crystal rocks. It costs £560 a roll.

Top tip: A glamorous, Fifties-inspired style will dominate this year, predicts Lizzie Deshayes, design director at wallpaper company Fromental, whose papers are hand-painted and hand-embroidered by artists in London and China.

“We’re forecasting that the key trends will be prints based on naturals such as woods, stones and water and there’ll be a lot of bold black and white prints.”

celebration walls

Designers at Mini Moderns have created an exclusive print to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain.

Its geometric design features highlights of the event in 1951 and the paper is printed using water-based inks. It costs £50 a roll.

Wimbledon fans could mark the occasion with green and yellow Tennis wallpaper, £72 a roll, with a geometric design of rackets and balls. It’s from Turner & Pocock’s Sports range at Garrendenny Lane Interiors.

Alternatively, Graham & Brown makes it easy to turn walls into a crowning glory with its monochrome Crowns and Coronets design wallpaper - perfect for this year’s busy wedding season! It’s £25 a roll and can be accessorised with jewels, £7 a pack.Top tip: “People are becoming aware that it’s possible to have fun with walls,” says Paula Taylor.

“With easy-to-hang papers it’s perfectly possible to change a wall if you decide it’s no longer to your taste. You can refresh a scheme by choosing new wallpaper or painting over it, which is particularly effective if it’s textured.”

Give me a home on the rangeown on the prairie, something is stirring. A new style is coming our way faster than you can say ‘Yee-ha!’ Banish that celluloid vision of tumbleweed, bunk beds and bare board ranch houses - traditional home to the tough Wild West cowboy. This is a liveable look for today that embraces the softer side of rustic, with bleached wood and colour in woven blankets, Navajo rugs and reclaimed treasures.

“It’s a style that says ‘home’ wherever you are,” says author Fifi O’Neill, who celebrates it in her own house with folksy charm and an almost tangible welcoming atmosphere.

All the rooms in her converted 1920s barn, with its open rafters and raw wood walls, are decorated in a subtle dove grey and chalk white palette. Loosely woven linen curtains hang at the windows, filtering the bright sunlight, and it’s the reclaimed furniture and intriguing personal touches collected over the years that are allowed to star.

There’s no hall and the spaces flow seamlessly into one another. Everywhere there are examples of her creativity, from a fake plank floor - plywood given a distressed paint finish - to a carved mantel as a focal point with a grate filled with artfully arranged foliage and branches. It’s a winning decor effect for those who are on a budget (and these days who isn’t!) and attracted so many fans that O’Neill has distilled the essence into a new book, Romantic Prairie Style.

Although French-born, 20 years ago she fell in love with vast plains and the sweeping grasslands of Canada and America,

where originally many European immigrants created humble dwellings which, depending on their location, took on a variety of designs from ranches and cabins to cottages and farmhouses.

“Those homes all share common characteristics, among them a love and respect for traditions and honest materials, a need for tranquility and simplicity and a spontaneity of design, be it rustic, refined or understated chic,” she says.

“What’s so liberating and appealing is that prairie-style decorating doesn’t answer to a set of rules but spells freedom and creativity - the only essentials are conjuring a personal sense of comfort and beauty. What could be easier?”

Settler-style resourcefulness and necessity work hand-in-hand in O’Neill’s world. “My own taste leans toward a refined rusticity, a look easily accomplished with pre-loved pieces, whisper-soft colours, romantic accents, eloquent objects and a ‘do it yourself ’ attitude.” Quaint shutters are made from the doors of an old armoire, pillow cases are hand-made from vintage fabrics and outdoor metal furniture is given a gleaming finish with metal paint, making it elegant enough for a bedroom.

“Peaceful, uncomplicated and comforting, this barn is my prairie escape, my simpler life,” says O’Neill. “I’m surrounded by treasures I’ve rescued from markets and second-hand shops. “If you surround yourself with the things you love, you can’t help but have a home in which you feel content.”

Rustic pRaiRieThis is a down-on-the-farm look, adaptable and versatile, which makes an easy marriage with an existing rustic scheme.

“You don’t have to opt for a bare look,” says O’Neill. “Just don’t over-clutter and keep the palette subdued. I like to play with textures and then add colour in accessories.”

Emulate a chic pairing of vintage and industrial by featuring stout wooden furniture, hessian and linen fabrics that allow grain and texture to star and utility accessories such as farming tools or craftsmen’s implements.Lasso the look: Go on a treasure hunt to reclamation yards (www.uk-reclamation.co.uk) and second-hand furniture markets and auctions for pieces that can be restored.

Revamp pieces with spray paint such as Plasticote, £9.99 for a 400ml can, and Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Spray Paint, £6.99 for 400ml, has ideal shades such as Aged Iron and Autumn Brown. Both paints from DIY stores.

(www.re-foundobjects.com) which specialise in vintage fabrics and hardware such as delightful wooden shoe lasts.

pRaiRie pRettyLight and landscape were integral to the original prairie homes, meaning nature’s hues reflected in accessories, from pretty collections of glassware to posies of flowers, are all ingredients of a more decorative approach to the style.

“I also like to incorporate French vintage charm into my schemes,” says O’Neill. “Of course, objects must be practical and functional but a crystal chandelier suits the glamour puss in me. My friends always laugh at the fact that even when I build, paint or drill I always do it in high heels!”

White-painted wrought iron bedsteads, dressers and antique chandeliers can be combined to give a more flirty, feminine feel but keep the look simple and grounded with stripped floors, and textured, plastered walls or homely wood-panelled ones and fabrics such as denim and gingham.

Lasso the look: French-style furniture in a natural wood finish or a distressed paint effect abounds. Companies such as Dibor (www.dibor.co.uk) or Sweetpea & Willow (www.sweetpeaandwillow.com) are good sources.

pioneeR spiRitWhimsical, small touches give the feeling you could step outside and ‘ride into the sunset’, no matter what your location, or spark a full-blown passion for life on the open range.

“I like uncontrived arrangements - perhaps a collection of vintage tin containers, a candleholder and a collection of coloured glassware,” says O’Neill.

“I think the world is longing to return to a simpler way of life, surrounded by things we cherish, amuse us or make us feel secure. This is style where you can have fun and relax.”

the souNd of things to comehd AudioVisual, has noticed a wave of

new technology products aimed at the discerning which have hit their showroom this year. Digital music is nothing new and consumers have adapted to the iPod in recent years, but now they want something better. High end music streamers are the next big thing.

Streamers take music from your PC and can play it all over your house without the need for wires or clumsy headphones. Top brands such as Arcam and Cyrus have just released new products which not

only stream wirelessly from room to room, but can play uncompressed files which can be higher than CD quality aimed at the discerning listener.

Michael Tindale of HD AudioVisual, the county’s newest most exciting AudioVisual retailer says:

“Consumers have grown accustomed to the convenience of digital music via the iPod but that doesn’t mean that digital music has to be portable and low quality. The new wave of music streamers are so easy to use they offer the convenience of the

iPod but in a home environment for listening in comfort. New digital music formats offer the chance to listen to music of a quality that few people have ever heard in the home because it is better than CD. The key to all this is that it has to be as easy to set up and use as the iPod and the new generation of music streamers offer this”

utstanding cityscape artist Csilla Orban will be making a personal appearance at The Lemongrove Gallery Harpenden,

on Saturday 25th of June 2011 from 2pm until 4pm to launch her new Exhibition

‘Night and the City’ a collection of Original Paintings and her latest Limited Editions. The gallery will be hosting a Champagne reception in Csilla’s honor and has issued an open invitation to local art lovers to come and meet this superstar of the art world.

The cityscapes of Csilla occupy a unique position on the current art market. Although they depict specific and often recognisable locations, their particular brilliance lies in the creation of atmosphere rather than the accuracy of detail. By merging colours and blurring the reflected light in the rain-slicked streets, Csilla conveys the fast-moving essence of her chosen subject in her own distinctive way.

After spending much of her twenties travelling

Csilla Orban

around Europe she finally settled in the UK. Fascinated by these exciting foreign cultures, Csilla was inspired to paint what she saw. Her favourite place and the one which first galvanized her imagination was Paris, and she was entranced by its intimate cafes, grand boulevards and bohemian culture. She has been a member and a co-secretary of the Parisian Independent Salon’s Hungarian group since 1996, where she has helped several talented young artists to establish their reputation on the international art scene.

Csilla’s artistic creed is to paint ‘faithfully and with humanity’. She has participated in many international exhibitions. Eventually, after spending six months in the USA, in June 2006 she participated in a joint exhibition of contemporary painters in Texas which brought her to the notice of a wider audience.

The Lemongrove Gallery is one of the UK’s most stylish and innovative art venues - the cutting-edge art galleries offers art lovers a place in which to

relax and enjoy viewing an exceptional range of Original Paintings, collectable Limited Editions and Sculptures.

Gallery Manager, Olivia O’Sullivan said “We are delighted to welcome Csilla to the gallery and are proud that she has accepted our invitation to visit us and showcase her fabulous and atmospheric Paintings. I hope our friends in the area will all be coming along to meet her and to enjoy this unique occasion.”

itchen fashions don’t change that quickly, although home interior consultants do

recommend changing the complete look every eight or ten years. Also, with the

kitchen changing its role toward becoming the central gathering place in the home, there is now a move to bolder, more vibrant colours to reflect its status as the ‘new living room’.

Since many properties were developed or remodelled during the late 90’s, early noughties housebuilding boom, it’s probably time for many people to think about updating their kitchen décor and introducing the bright reds and oranges, emerald greens, shades of blue and grey, and other bursts of colour that are being talked about for 2011. Not so long ago, that would have entailed a brand new fitted kitchen, necessitating ripping out the old cabinets, several weeks’ household disruption and considerable expense. Now, however, kitchen makeover specialists Granite Transformations, with showrooms in Watford and Ealing can reface your worktops and cabinets instead of replacing them, usually within one or two days and without all the mess and aggravation.

Apart from saving money, refacing makes planning sense, because most of us prefer to retain the same kitchen layout, want to avoid changing all the wiring and plumbing, and would like the job completed quickly. Worktop and cabinet refacing is a quick and affordable way to remodel your kitchen and, for those of us who are environment friendly, there’s minimal builder’s rubble going to landfill.

When it comes to this season’s bold, vibrant colours and unusual new designs, Granite Transformations certainly has it covered, especially as its tough, hardwearing surfaces fit directly over your existing worktops. There’s juicy Cristallino Orange, dramatic Cristallino Blue, contemporary Cristallino Red and bright emerald Dream Green, all made from post-consumer glass like used wine and beer bottles, yet tougher than granite and virtually maintenance-free. So not only are they eco-friendly to fit, they are made from sustainable material.

There are funky black and white tones in Granite Transformations’ granite and quartz worktop range too, like Nero Marquis, Nero Galaxy and Black Star, or Polar Ice, Ghiaccio and White Star. Again all are high in recycled content and able to withstand knocks, scratches, stains and heat up to 300˚C. There’s also a whole palette of earthen and desert shades like Walker Gold, Mocha Real, Veneto, Terra Ombra and Sabbia D’Oro, which team well with pale wood and coffee-coloured cabinets or contrast with high gloss, primary colour doors.

For 2011, Granite Transformations has introduced a naturalistic veined look that is unique to this type of manufactured stone worktop. This contrasting effect can be found on midnight black Nero Marquis, cool misty Cape Cod Green and the soft quartz tones of Fire Beige. Adding steel to the range, as it were, are fashionable new designs Dark Steel and Blue Steel, which feature intriguing traces of semi-precious material recovered from computer chips.

Nor does the choice end with around 60 different worktop finishes, because Granite Transformations enables you to complete the makeover effect with made-to-measure replacement kitchen doors and drawer fronts. Here the opportunity to introduce bursts of colour comes with High Gloss Red, High Gloss Paprika, Ultragloss Saffron, Ultragloss Plum or more muted shades like Matt Aubergine and Matt Olive. On top of that there are black and white door designs that go well with contrasting and colourful worktops or timeless classics in a variety of woodgrains that go with more or less anything.

What’s more, the cabinet refacing is carried out by the same Granite Transformations qualified fitters that install the worktops. So instead of various sub-contractors, there are just two workmen in your home and, because most of the fabricating work is undertaken off-site, they won’t be clogging up your kitchen for weeks, just a couple or so days. There’s also a unique lifetime guarantee on the replacement worktops and, because wood’s a softer material, a still-generous 2 year warranty on made-to-measure doors.

New worktops often mean upgrading your sink and taps too and Granite Transformations can supply and install these too in stainless steel or silk sheen finishes, as well as hobs, oven, hoods and other appliances should your budget stretch that far, using top brand names like Franke, Neff and Hotpoint. Then, if you fancy treating your remodelled kitchen to a ‘floating’ island unit, say, or some extra storage cabinets, their fitters can build and install new units, possibly introducing design features like luxurious waterfall ends. Again, they’ll do most of the work off site, so there’s limited dust, debris and power tool orchestra.

But that’s not all, because all of those colourful, diamond-bright work surfaces are also perfect for bathroom makeovers too. These inherently tough, lightweight, 100% waterproof granite, quartz and recycled glass materials will fit just as easily over tiles, bath panels, vanity units and painted walls, the large slab sizes creating virtually seamless finishing surfaces. Imagine that, a striking emerald green bathroom, a dramatic Black Star bathroom, a shower clad with Dark Steel, or an island bath encased in Polar White or brilliant Cristallino Red.

It goes without saying that Granite Transformations’ qualified fitters will measure up, template and install your dream bathroom makeover too. The lifetime material warranty still applies and you could even replace those bathroom cabinet and cupboard doors with something made-to-measure in black or white or saffron or aubergine or plum or lava or olive…

a lounge. Ensure it’s stylish by keeping a sharp eye on design as well as comfort.

“Al fresco dining is one of the great pleasures of summer,” says George Clarke, design consultant for B&Q.

“An area of decking or paving with a pergola over the top will give a sense of enclosure and make it feel like an outdoor room. Zone areas by using structured plants in pots to give instant shape, character and interest.”

Summer’s on the way and revamping the patio’s a priority if you want to take full advantage of sunny days and sultry nights. There’s a superbtchoice of furniture and accessories which could transform even a drab, tiny space - with prices that won’t raise your temperature by turning the bank balance red.

Create some patio party razzmatazz with glow-in-the-dark furniture and vibrantly coloured gnomes, or be more demure with decorative wired pieces or classic rattan furniture.

And for outdoor decor divas there’s the ultra-fashionable ‘outdoor room’ look with swinging cocoon seats, coffee tables and canopied loungers.

“Over the years we’ve seen a move away from functional, utilitarian garden furniture as customers demand a lot more from their outside space,” says Nicola Gidlow, outdoor living buyer for John Lewis.

“People want a recognisable style, rather than random pieces, and a space which is tailored to their lifestyle and matches their interior taste.

“Also, what’s emerging strongly this season is a trend for creating settings which conjure a holiday, exotic atmosphere that probably reflects a trend to ‘staycation’.”

Rob Fairhurst, managing director at Outdoor Chic, says patios are fast becoming the new ‘play areas’ for adults.

“There’s a strong trend for kitchen/family rooms opening out on to a terrace or garden so the area’s highly visible from the home, and that means people require the setting to have the ‘wow’ factor and be a focal point.

“Let’s face it, secretly most people want to turn the neighbours green with envy with a sophisticated ‘outdoor’ room which is as comfortable as a lounge and enhances their property.”

If you’re wavering between wood and wire, or wrestling over rattan and wicker, make it simple by checking out perfect patio looks.

Hit tHe deckIt’s hardly surprising that as an island nation we never tire of coastal style, and it’s sailed in again this season.

“Natural wood furniture, crisp blue and white fabrics for cushions and tablecloths and smart navy parasols have a timeless appeal and conjure an easy informality which is just right for relaxing,” says Gidlow.

“No matter what the location, it’s easy to mimic that by-the-sea atmosphere with a few seaside accessories, from blue hurricane lamps, to stripey deckchairs and a barbecue bucket.”

Hot tropicsTurn up the heat in the garden with exotic florals, spicy hues and light-up furniture that makes a patio an irresistible entertaining space in the evening.

“Colour and technology are the big story for patios,” says Rob Fairhurst. “Furniture which incorporates lighting is fun but also highly effective at glamorising even modest patios and adding an extra dimension to the outdoors at night.”

country garden coolThis is a quintessentially British look, redolent of soft green landscapes and the idyllic setting for lazy afternoon teas or sunset cocktails.

“While classic squarer shapes will always remain popular, this season will see the re-emergence of the ‘timeless curve’,” says Heather McCann, creative director for specialist company Indian Ocean.

“Gentle lines provide a more sympathetic look for an outdoor space, especially in more traditional settings. If you want a different, but still suitable, interpretation, opt for a chic combination of white and wood, which is a key trend this summer.”
