fold drop in pollution is very impressive; even on an emergency day with the AQI over 500, the mask would bring your air to WHO-safe levels.

The best test is always a real world scenario, as a proper snug fit around the edges is crucial. And since this blog is an evidence-based blog, there actually is one well-designed study published, a randomized controlled trial of Totobobo versus a proper N95 mask... with those real-world results above, the mask reduced particles 135-fold. which is actually very impressive, and a lot better than some other reviewed (unnamed) cycling masks.

I tried it around town for a bit, and the overall comfort is good. It definitely is less awkward-looking than the typical N95 with ex-halation valves. I was pleasantly surprised with the seal and that my glasses didn’t fog up.. I didn’t do any fancy techinical testing with it, but on a bad, smelly day I put on the mask and instantly could no longer smell that pollution.

Also, there are a few other real-world advantages:

Some disposable mask has a metal nose clip to improve the fitting around the nose bridge area. However the metal clip tend to break after a few times of use. This is not acceptable for a reusable mask. We believe the new “moulding” feature is more comfortable and more robust.

Comfort and FitIf a mask is shaped to follow the contour of the face closely, you don’t need to pull the strap very tight to make a good seal. A less tight strap means more comfortable wear for a longer time. Our TotoSoft material has been upgraded and you can make use of the following steps to “mould” the mask so that it follows the profile of the user’s face closely:(1) remove the filters from the mask(2) prepare a bowl of hot water (70~80ºC) (3) dip the mask into the hot water for a minute until the mask soften, including the part near the nose bridge.(Photo)(4) remove the mask from the hot water, use both hand to shape both side of the nose area such that it form a stronger “inward band”. (5) hold the mask with the shape in position, wait a few minutes until it cools down, or rinse the mask under cold water to “freeze” the new shape. (Photo)(7) test the fit with the new shape.

You can mould the mask many times with this method to optimize the fit. Once moulded, the mask will “remember” the shape for a long time, even if you pack it flat.

Scientific tests

To validate the effectiveness of Totobobo mask, we sent the masks to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong to be tested by professional fit-test facilities. The test report was published in the Journal of Hospital Infection. The objec-tive of the test was to compare the efficacy of Totobobo aganst N95 masks (3M 1860 or 1860S or 1862). The test was conducted on 22 healthy volunteers. All test subjects have previously passed fit-test of N-95 mask but all are first time trying the Totobobo mask. The key findings are:

• The pass rate (filtration factor >100) of Totobobo mask was comparable to the fit-tested N-95 mask (~75%). How-ever, the qualitfied protection level of Totobobo (135) is not as high as N-95 mask (193).• 65% subjects preferred the comfort of Totobobo mask over their fitted tested N95 masks, comfort is an important factor when come to indivicual safety compliance.• Previous studies shown majority of (N95) masks fit less than 40% of the test population, while in this test Totobobo was fitting 75% of the test population.

FAQ - Totobobo maskWhy mask fitting is important? A good fitting mask ensure all the air go through the filter before entering the breathing zone. Modern technology produces high quality filter competently, but obtaining and validating a good face-seal remains a challenge for many facemasks available in the market.

How to ensure Totobobo mask fits my face?There are 3 easy steps to optimize the mask-to-face-fit:1) Sizing: Totobobo mask come in standard size fitting most adult. You can cut it smaller to fit smaller faces. Use the “Totobobo mask simulator” test the cut before cutting the real mask. 2) Check the seal: Observe through the transparent body of Totobobo mask to check if a continous mask-to-face seal completed around the nose and mouth. Adjust the mask up or down to see if you can further optimize the seal. 3) If necessary fine tune the fit using our “moulding” method (pg.5). This will help to eliminate small gaps such as around the nose bridge.

The Strap/earloop looks very thin, will they break easily? Totobobo elastic headstrap and earloop is very elastic and soft. This property helps to produce a comfortable wear. It can be extended to 4 times the original length and tested for 8000 times operation. It should not break easily.

How to clean, and store the mask?Remove filter cap before cleaning. Clean respirator and filter lock cap with soap or neutral detergent. “My nose bridge is a bit high so there are gaps on both side of the nose. It tends to seal after a while but exhaling strongly breaks the seal.”First of all, air leak during exhale improve comfort, and does not affects protection. In fact this is the function of a one-way valve do- let the air out quickly during exhale, to improve comfort.If air coming out from the nose bridge fogging up glasses or goggle, you can adjust the earloop /headstrap such that the upper part of the mask is fitting a little tighter than the lower part (chin). As you exhale, close your mouth and the air should come out quickly under your chin because now there is a bigger gap there (this will help to drastically reduce water condensation too). As you inhale, open your mouth slightly and the seal below the chin is tighten.

Further more, - the material of Totobobo mask is “moldable” and can be shaped to better fit your nose bridge. (Pg.5)

“How can I reduce the water condensation inside the mask?”Reduce exhaled moisture:Water condensation is mainly due to moisture contains in the exhalse air. Moisture content of ex-hale air from the mouth is much higher than those from the nose. To reduce condensation, exhale using the nose.

One-way-value effect:Another point, adjust the strap so that the whole mask function like a one-way-valve. If the strap is not very tight, the seal between the mask and the face will be broken by the positive pressure within the mask due to exhalation. Moisture and air will be release quickly and little time for con-densation to happen. When you inhale, the negative press within the mask will “suck” the mask and close the seals.

Wipe it clean and dry:Lastly, since Totobobo mask is a plastic shell, water condensation can be easily wipe dry with a piece of tissue or cloth. Cloth mask or other material will take a long time before the mask can be dry and ready for use again.

FAQ - Totobobo filterWhat are the differences between F96, F94 and F92

filters?All Totobobo filters are interchangeable with all versions of Totobobo mask (Headstrap, earloop

and SuperCool). All three types of filters (F96, F94, F92) consist of 3-dimensional structure and provides low breathing resistant with high filtration efficiency. The filter-fibers contains electro-static charges and is highly effective to trap fine dusts and particles down to 0.1 micron. Totobobo filters are suitable for blocking airborne pathogens such as virus and bacteria, as well as fine particles such as PM2.5.

How long does the filter last?The effective usage time of the filter depends on environment and usage factors. These factors
