Top101CE RetailersRetailers Post Modest Increases in a Turbulent MarketplaceBy Laura Spinale

The merchants listed in Dealerscope’s registry of the Top 101 CE retailers in the United States and Canada sold $227.7 billion in consumer electronics in 2014, a modest 3.35

percent increase over the $220.32 billion earned the previous year. Relatively static sales, however, are not indicative of a static marketplace. Significant industry moves include a mass exodus from Canada and the bankruptcy and closing of once-powerhouse retailers.

Perhaps the most significant move out of Canada is that of Target, which plans to close all 133 of its outlets there less than two years after entering the market. Others leaving or paring back Canadian operations include Sony Retail stores, which is also shuttering all Canadian stores. Best Buy Canada, while keeping its doors open, has an-nounced plans to cut about 950 jobs.

There is also upheaval among retailers in the United States. RadioShack declared bankruptcy in February. It plans to close 1,100 stores and sell the rest to Sprint. Regional player American TV and Appliance of Madison went out of business. And Staples is spending about $6.3 billion to acquire Office Depot, which itself had acquired OfficeMax in 2013.

Methodology—Dealerscope researched electronics retailers in the United States and Canada—as well as hardware manufacturers selling direct to consumers—in order to devise its Top 101 registry. Information was gleaned from readily available sources, including SEC filings, corporate press releases, business databases and local press reports.

Dealerscope contacted each retailer, giving each the opportunity to confirm or contest initial figures. Many confirmed sales estimates. However, some privately held companies refused to disclose sales information. Other companies would not break out CE sales from their overall merchandise mixes. Finally, some companies had no comment. In these cases, Dealerscope chose to publish its best estimates.

All sales listed are reported on a calendar year, rather than fiscal year, basis. When listing CE sales we included electronics sales generated by companies’ corporate sales, as well as sales to governmental bodies and the educational arena. To the best of our ability, we have excluded sales to regions other than the United States and Canada. CE estimates include sales of pre-recorded media.

All sales and store count information should be considered Dealerscope estimates.
