Top Tips for Protecting Children’s Hearing

When most people think of

hearing problems, elderly

people come to mind. But

unfortunately, hearing damage

can happen at any age, and it’s important to

protect the ears to avoid unnecessary hearing loss.

This is especially important in children, who have

very sensitive ears that can be permanently

damaged with prolonged exposure to noise. Follow

these tips to protect your children’s hearing in loud

situations.

1. Keep your children out of situations with loud

noises if at all possible. If you’re going to a rock

concert, shell out the money for a babysitter so

your kids won’t have to be exposed to prolonged

noise at a high decibel level. Plus, you’ll have a

more enjoyable experience without kids in tow.

2. Put ear plugs in your kids’ ears or ear muffs

over their ears if you will be in areas with loud

noises. For example, kids should wear ear plugs to

a 4th of July fireworks show or if they’re visiting a

construction site with lots of loud machinery. If

you’re at an event with loudspeakers, avoid sitting

next to them and give your children ear plugs or

ear muffs.

3. Set children’s toys with speakers to the quietest

setting. You don’t need to hear them from all the

way across the room, and children can damage

their hearing by holding the toys near their ears

with the volume turned up all the way.

4. Limit the volume on headphones that children

wear. Especially if they’re using them for prolonged

periods of time, wearing the headphones can

damage hearing. Consider doing quiet activities on

airplane trips instead of cranking up the volume on

the headphones to hear a movie over the noise of

the engine.
