BNI Accelerators: Top 10 Traits of Master Networkers

Businessman Making Presentation To OfficeColleagues

Besides being the top networking organization in the world, BNI® also teaches it's membersHOW to network. Research has shown that the top networkers have 10 common traits. The greatnews is that all of these are 'learnable', and improving on even a couple of the traits can makeYOU a better networker. Here are the top 10 traits:

1) Timely follow ups

It's well know that, if you fail to follow up on your referrals, those who gave you that referral willeventually tire of doing so, and stop giving you referrals in the first place. One of the mostcommon complaint in our chapter (BNI Accelerators of Winnipeg) is when people fail to followup in a timely manner.

2) Positive attitude

People want to associate with positive people, and dislike negativity. When you're positive, you'relike a magnet and your referral partners will more likely send their friends and family to see you.

3) Enthusiasm and Motivation

Being enthusiastic about what you do is very important. If you believe in yourself, it makesothers believe in you as well, and it makes it easier for them to sell you.

4) Trustworthiness

When someone refers a friend to you, they (the referrer) are putting THEIR reputation on the line. Not being trustworthy is the quickest way to stop receiving referrals. Trust must be earned overtime, and can never be taken lightly or for granted, because it plays a huge role in therelationship.

5) Good listening skills

Successful networkers know how to listen for the opportunities and for the needs. Listen to yourchapter-members as they describe their perfect referral, and then listen to people you meet everyday, for opportunities to match their 'pain' with a BNI member services. Opportunities are allaround us every day..... you just have to listen to your customers, friends, family as they talkabout 'what ails them', and then make the appropriate referral.

6) Commitment to networking

Master Networkers are never off duty. They can be found listening and interacting at the doctorsoffice, in the line at the grocery store and of course networking meetings. They keep the 'GiversGain' philosophy in mind and are always looking for opportunities for the people in theirnetwork.

7) Gratitude

Gratitude is lacking in todays fast-paced business world. Lacking..but all the more appreciatedwhen it IS found. People like to refer others to business professionals who go out of their way tosay 'Thank You'.

8) Helpfulness

Master Networkers also keep their eyes and ears open for opportunities to help others. Sending

unsolicited news articles of a helpful nature, showing up to help with a move, bringing a specialguest to introduce to someone else are all simple examples of helpfulness. Master networkers getjoy out of helping others.

9) Sincerity

One of the best ways to develop this trait is to make a special effort to give someone yourundivided attention. When talking to them on the phone, LISTEN. Don't multi-task on thecomputer at the same time. When speaking with them in person, make eye contact and let themknow you're listening to them.

10) Dedicated to working your network

It's not called net-sitting, net-lunching......it's called net-working. Yes, it requires work, training, dedication and time, but the payoffs can be huge.

Bonus Tip: 11) Belong to an organized business network

Join a network of businesses, dedicated to giving and receiving referrals to and from each other. Our group, BNI Accelerators, for example, is a group of 22 businesses in Winnipeg who meetweekly, exchange referrals daily, and help grow each others businesses always.
