Top 10 Child Safety Tips for Window Blinds
Although window blinds are generally safe, and reports of children getting hurt are rare, it’s still worth making them even safer for kids.
The following are safety tips to ensure your window blinds are safe for kids while maintaining efficiency.
Use a safety device with all corded window blinds. However, not all window blinds come with it. You can ask your window covering supplier for recommended safety solutions for the type of blinds you’re setting up.
Refit all safety devices after decorating. Some people usually forget this, leaving window blinds chains and cords hanging freely.
Make sure that cords and chains hang at least 1.5m above the ground.
Avoid tying cords together. This makes it a lot more difficult to operate, and it reduces the blinds’ efficiency. Just make sure safety devices are in place.
Keep children’s beds, high chairs and cots away from window blinds.
Inner or rear cords of window blinds should also be fitted with safety devices.
When buying new window blinds, check that they passed Australian and international safety standards. Ask your supplier about it.
Attach a warning notice to cords and chains to remind other people about the safety measures in place for using the blinds
Always refer to the owner’s manual for instructions on installation, operation and safety
If you are unsure about how to implement safety measures on your window blinds, ask your supplier to demonstrate it for you.
