SHINJUKU¥ ¥ ¥ ¥

Robot Restaurant1-7-1 Kabukicho, B2F, Shinjuku, Tokyo 160-0021robot-restaurant.com

In a restaurant unlike any other, you’ll find yourself more focused on the entertainment than on the food. Not for the faint of heart, the high tech robots of diverse shapes and sizes battle it out in the center ring cheered on by diners. The flashing lights, loud music and impressive robot technology never allow you to forget that you’re in Tokyo. Reserve tickets in advance since the four daily shows consistently sell out.

SHINJUKU¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ - ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥

Shinjuku NakamurayaKabukicho, 1 Chome−7−1 , Shinjuku, Tokyo 160-0022 nakamuraya.co.jp

Started as a bread and confectionery company in 1901, Nakamuraya first introduced Indian style curry to Japan. The chicken curry is their specialty with its powerful spices, roasted and ground in-house. The Nakamuraya building is made up of 6 levels of food, a paragon of yoshoku--European foods adopted into Japanese cuisine. The basement houses the café, while baked goods and desserts can be purchased on the ground floor. Enjoy Chinese yoshoku dishes on the 2nd floor or try French yoshoku fare on the 3rd, or eat traditional Indian buffet on the 4th. (Note: the current building is closed for remodeling as of August 26 and will reopen October 29, 2014.)

ChiboYebisu Garden Place Tower 38F, 4-20-3 Ebisu, Shibuya, Tokyochibo.com

If you don’t have the opportunity to hit up Osaka during this trip, head over to the Ebisu neighborhood of Shibuya to have traditional Osakan food at Chibo. It may be a chain restaurant, but for the best reason: they make some of the best okonomiyaki, a savory pancake dish with various fillings. You’ll find the menu features a wide variety, and the combination of generous portions with prices that won’t break the bank, make this place a winner.

CHUO¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ - ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥

Tsukiji Fish Market5-2-1 Tsukiji, Chuo, Tokyo 104-0045tsukiji-market.or.jp

Along the Port of Tokyo, this fish market is considered the International Stock Exchange of fish, setting daily prices for fish worldwide. Try to nab a seat at one of the many sushi stalls for some of the freshest sushi you’ll ever have the good fortune to taste. Beware, most stalls have limited seating with renowned chefs, so the wait may be several hours at those locations–like at Sushidai, for example. Try Nakaya, Sushi Maru or Ichiba Sushi if you can’t bear the wait.

Expect massive crowds during cherry blossom season as this is the place to be to see the blooms on full display with over 1,000 trees in the park. Come to eat local dango–grilled rice dumplings, various grilled meats on sticks or curry udon.

Try traditional tempura at this casual restaurant after a visit to the Senso-Ji shrine next door. The meals are a great value, including three prix-fixe menu options. Try the fried prawns over rice, ebi tendon, meal . This eatery is well-established, so it has a steady stream of customers, but the average wait of 15 minutes is manageable.

Kappo Yoshiba2-14-15 Yokoami, Sumida, Tokyo 130-0015kapou-yoshiba.jp

Home to the national sumo stadium, this neighborhood is the sumo area of Tokyo. The down-to-earth Kappo Yoshiba restaurant is a former sumo stable where you’ll have the opportunity to eat around a still-functioning sumo ring and taste chankonabe, which is a stew with diverse ingredients intended to help wrestlers pack on pounds. If you want to stay clear of the chanko, you can enjoy anything else from the fish-heavy menu.
