Keepingchildrenhealthyandsaferequirescollaborativeeffortstoidentifyandaddresstheriskfactorsthatjeopardizetheirwell-being.Sadly,thelivesoffartoomanychildrenarecutshortduetopreventablefactorsthatarecompletelyoutoftheircontrol.AsArizonastrivestocreateabrighterfuturefortoday’schildren,it’simportantthatwefindwaystoassurechildrenahealthypathtosuccessfromthestart.Doingsowillrequireprofessionals,thepublicandpolicymakerstobuildoneachother’sstrengths,prioritizecommonareasofopportunityandtackletheissuesposinggreatestthreattoouryouth.TogetherforTomorrow:ProtectingArizona’sChildrenwillexploreopportunitiesforArizonatopreventchildmortality.We’llshowcaseinterventionsandbestpracticescurrentlyunderway,andsparkfurtherdialogueaboutprogramsandpoliciesthatprovidenurturingconditionsinwhichchildrencanthrive.Thedaywillfocuson3coreareasthatareessentialtochildren’swell-being:preconceptionhealth,injuryprevention,andmentalhealth.We’llhearfromexpertsandpractitionersfromacrossArizonaaboutthekeyinterventionsthatthey’veimplementedinthekeyareasthatdrivemortalityoutcomes:preconceptionhealth(preventingprematurebirth);injuryprevention(includingcaraccidents,unsafesleep,drowningandchildwelfare);andbehavioralhealth(mentalillness,substanceabuseandsuicide).We’llclosewithacall-to-actiontoencouragepolicymakerstoimplementevidence-basedrecommendationstoreducechildhooddeaths.Participantswilllearnhowtoensuretheirvoicesareheardbypolicymakersatalllevels,aswellaspracticalactionsindividualsandorganizationscantaketoinfluenceearlychildhoodpolicy.

Educatingwomenandtheirfamiliesbeforepregnancyisacriticalfirststeptoimprovingbirthoutcomes.Manywomensimplyarenotawarethatahealthypregnancybeginslongbeforeconception.Preconceptionhealthreferstohelpingawomanbecomeashealthyaspossiblebeforeshebecomespregnant,whileinter-conceptionhealthinvolveshelpingawomanunderstandtheimportanceofbeinghealthybetweenpregnanciesandtheneedtowaitatleast18monthsbeforebecomingpregnantagaintohelpoptimizebirthoutcomes.ThisPanelwillexplorebest-practicesunderwayinArizonatoimprovepreconceptionandinter-conceptionhealthtoimprovebirthoutcomesincludingreducingprematurebirth.Panelistswilldiscusspreconceptionhealthstrategiesbeingimplementedatamanagedcareplan,attheproviderlevelandfromapolicyandpopulationhealthperspective.

PreventingInjuries:TheLeadingCauseofDeathforAZKidsInjuryremainstheleadingcauseofmortalityamongchildrenandteens.Childinjuryispredictableandpreventableandisamongthemostunder-recognizedpublichealthproblemsinArizona.Leadingcausesofchildinjuryincludemotorvehiclecrashes,suffocation(e.g.sleepenvironments),drowning,poisoning,andfalls.GoodprogresshasbeenmadeinpreventingchildinjuryinArizona,andchildinjurydeathrateshavedecreasedinthelastdecade,yetitremainstheleadingcauseofdeathforchildrenandteens.Morecanbedonetokeepourchildrensafe.Ourpanelists(fromaruralandurbanperspective)willexplorebestpractices,policies,andcoalitionworkunderwaytostemthetide.
