Kaiser Permanente Regional Reference Lab Courtyard
Kaiser Permanente Courtyard
Kaiser Permanente retrofitted an old auto parts warehouse for their new support services center. The warehouse contained an existing courtyard with three mature Honey locust trees, several overgrown junipers, some concrete pavers, and turf grass. Kaiser Permanente felt it was important to create an intimate space of respite for their employees as well as large a flexible gathering space. The new courtyard design includes a dining patio adjacent to the building’s lunch/break room and four intimate seating areas spaced along a crusher fines pathway. Stacked sandstone benches and a circular planter define the edge of the dining patio and provide a sense of drama to the courtyard. The strong paving geometry is softened by the native shrubs, perennial and ornamental grass plantings. The moveable tables and chairs on the patio afford fresh perspectives within the small outdoor space. The quality and arrangement of these materials result in a space which evokes a sense of comfort and relaxation. The result is a magnetic courtyard garden drawing momentary glances from inside and eventually physical attraction to the outside.

University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Foothills Laboratory Zero Central Courtyard
UCAR Foothills Lab Zero
The new lab building on the University Center for Atmospheric Research Campus created and empty space between existing buildings resulting in an opportunity to craft a memorable courtyard. The goal of the landscape design was to create a grand central gathering space that connects the new lab with the existing buildings on campus. The space is anchored with a large circular court serving as the junction point for all walkways leading into the space.
These meandering walks disperse from the gathering space to nearby parking areas and building entrances. The flowing walkways alleviate the rigid geometry established by the existing architecture, paving jointing and planting motif. The planting material was laid out to help reinforce the strong horizontal banding of paving materials. Monocultures of ground covers and native grass species alternate on either sides of these paving bands. More natural plantings occur within the surrounding beds that are defined by large sandstone blocks. These mass planting areas contain a repetitive mixture of ornamental grasses opposed by native grasses and perennials. The planting scheme allows for minimal use of natural resources and maintenance while providing an aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable space for all campus users.

St. Joseph’s Medical Pavilion Entry Plaza
St. Joseph’s Medical Pavilion Entry Plaza
This plaza offers a place of respite and solitude for visitors, staff and the neighboring community of St. Joseph’s Hospital. The plaza’s layout is fashioned after the previous park space and pedestrian movements that once occupied the corner of the site. The design offers multiple access points into the plaza and embraces the cross axial pedestrian movement from the hospital to adjacent retail services. A variety of seating elements offer individuals and small groups a secure feeling of comfort within this modest space. Three raised concrete planter seat walls were put in place to buffer adjacent street activities from the plaza space. Masses of perennials and grasses provide an understory screen while above, Honeylocust trees offer dappled shade to the plaza.

Anschutz Health and Wellness Center
Anschutz Health and Wellness Center
The AHWC is a unique and exciting addition on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus that will serve the existing centers for Human Nutrition, Integrative Medicine, and Women’s Health Research programs. It is designed to empower individuals to strive for health-conscious lives, promote healthier communities, and target pressing health issues such as disease prevention.
As proven by many research studies, a connection to the landscape has many health benefits. Therefor the landscape design strives for an inside-outside connection promoting a healthy lifestyle. The relationship with the landscape starts with the extension of the bistro into an exterior patio. South of the bistro patio is a garden with plenty of seating opportunities. The linear design of the garden planting reflects the agrarian culture and connection of food and landscape. The selected plant species appeal to all senses including taste. Perennial herbs inside the garden are aesthetically pleasing and can be used in the demonstration kitchen. The connection to the outdoors continues on the upper levels with the inception of an accessible green roof. Panoramic views make this space the ideal for fundraisers and special events. Again the connection to a healthy lifestyle is made with planting space to grow organic produce for the bistro. Special accommodations have been made to allow for a future greenhouse addition.

Colorado State University Industrial Science Building Courtyard Renovation
Industrial Science Building Courtyard Renovation
Redesign services for the Industrial Sciences Building (circa late 1800’s) for Colorado State University's School of Construction Management included upgrading the existing courtyard. The existing courtyard was deteriorating and needed a transformation to make the space safe and functional for the Construction Management students. Poor surface drainage over the years had destroyed the existing hardscape making the space unusable. Observing this, the redesign of the space showcases the stormwater being generated by the building and site. The courtyard demonstrates how hardscape pavements and plantings can convey, clean and slowdown storm water runoff via a series of infiltration planters, bio-swales and porous pavement systems.
Roof storm runoff is directed into this courtyard is channeled to different landscape planters or swales. Each planter allows the runoff to move through a series of lower planters. These series of planters slow the speed of the runoff allowing it to percolate through a specified soil mix and subgrade aggregate levels. This process helps purify the runoff before it returns and recharges the groundwater systems and downstream users. Site storm runoff follows a similar process as it percolates through different types of porous pavement and sub aggregate levels. The courtyard has become a living and learning outdoor laboratory for the University.

Eaglecrest High School Performing Arts Plaza
Eaglecrest High School Performing Arts Plaza
With the expansion of the existing high school came the
need for a new and pronounced performing arts
entry/drop-off sequence. The concept of a “grand plaza”
was developed to celebrate the school’s new main entry
and provide a large flexible outdoor space. The design of
the plaza creates a series of individual spaces acting
independently of one another, but also functioning as one
grand plaza. The grand plaza is made up of three major
components: a vehicle drop-off, a circular gathering
space, and a pedestrian promenade. The new drop-off
consists of a concrete drive lane with a “zero edge” curb
outlined by two “rumble strips” of concrete split face
pavers. A string of bollards wrap the outer, edge further
delineating the drop-off area. The circular gathering
space is also paved with split face pavers, mimicking a
European cobblestone piazza. The textural change
defines the space by giving it prominence within the
larger hardscape canvas. Rose sandstone seat walls
provide a permeable physical edge to the circular space
as well as offer informal seating for individuals and small
groups. The promenade is the integrating element
between the building, plaza, and parking lot. The chosen
planting materials strengthen and provide separation of
the three plaza components, while at the same time
softening the plaza edges and seating areas.
