firsT reading Isaiah 40:1–5, 9–11 (21C)

A reading from the Book of the Prophet IsaiahComfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,

and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated;indeed, she has received from

the hand of the Lord

double for all her sins.

A voice cries out:In the desert prepare the way

of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland

a highway for our God!Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be

made low;the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the Lord shall

be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord

has spoken.

Go up onto a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings;cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news!Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God!Here comes with power the Lord God, who rules by a strong arm;here is his reward with him, his recompense before him.Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

u O Lord, my God, you are great indeed! you are clothed with majesty and glory, robed in light as with a cloak. You have spread out the heavens like a tent-cloth. R

Page 5: TODAY’S MISSAL · Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed,

January 13 — 47

u You have constructed your palace upon the waters. You make the clouds your chariot;you travel on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers, and flaming fire your ministers. R

u How manifold are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have wrought them all —the earth is full of your creatures; the sea also, great and wide,in which are schools without number of living things both small and great. R

u They look to you to give them food in due time. When you give it to them, they gather it;when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. R

u If you take away their breath, they perish and return to the dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. R

second reading Titus 2:11–14; 3:4–7

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to TitusBeloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.

When the kindness and generous love

of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds

we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath

of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified

by his grace and become heirs in hope

of eternal life.

firsT reading 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6–7, 10–13a (31a)

A reading from the first Book of SamuelThe Lord said to Samuel: “Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen my king from among his sons.” As Jesse and his sons came to the sacrifice, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is here before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel: “Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any

one of these.” Then Samuel asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” Jesse replied, “There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send for him; we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here.” Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them. He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance. The Lord said,

“There — anoint him, for this is the one!” Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and from that day on, the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

second reading Ephesians 5:8–14

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the EphesiansBrothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful

even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. [His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works

of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he
