VISIT WineCountry

When is the besttime to visit?

Finger Lakes Wine Coun-try, New York is a year-rounddestination. During the sum-mer and fall, the wineries arethe busiest, as this is peaktravel season but is also agreat time of year in the Fin-ger Lakes. However, duringthe off-season of winter andspring, your wine tasting ex-perience is likely to be morepersonal and comfortable. Itis these months of the yearwhen you are likely to speakwith the owners and wine-makers themselves in thetasting room. Each seasonhas its perks. Be sure to takeinto consideration what youwould like to do during yourvisit outside of wine tasting:boating and swimming? Leafpeeping and harvest festi-vals? Skiing and snowshoe-ing? Considering all of theFinger Lakes activities avail-able should give you a greatidea of when is right for yourvisit to Finger Lakes WineCountry.

How do you get around?

While wine tasting, a des-ignated driver is a must. If

you decide to taste wine andget behind the wheel, be sureto spit the wine out into thedump buckets that are pro-vided at each winery. Anothergreat option is hiring a trans-portation company for aworry-free day.

Which wineriesshould I visit?

With nearly 100 wineriesto choose from, how do youknow which ones are rightfor you? First, plan on visit-ing between three to fivewineries in any given day.You don’t want to overdo ittrying to rush from winery towinery. Plan for time to be-come familiar with the winesand enjoy your tasting. Manywineries have great giftshops and cafes to explore. And make sure to allow timefor travel between wineries. In order to decide whatwineries you want to visit, alittle research is necessary.Do you like whites or reds?Sweet or dry? Are you inter-ested in fruit wine or icewine? With so many options,it can become overwhelming, but rest assured, the infor-mation is out there for you tofamiliarize yourself with.

With so many wineries in Finger LakesWine Country, how do you choosewhich ones to visit? What should you

be prepared for when visiting a winery? Whatshould you expect and plan for during a day ofwine tasting? And when is the best time to visitFinger Lakes Wine Country?

Mossy Bank Park, owned by the Village of Bath, is a gemset in natural surroundings. Located just west of the Villageon a promontory 500 feet above the valley floor, the over-looks at the park provide the “Best little-known view in theFinger Lakes”. On a clear day one can see the windmills inHoward and Cohocton, and all the way down the valley to-ward Hammondsport, as far as the high point on Rte. 54.And there is much to see within the park as well.Established over fifty years ago as a destination for pic-

nicking and nature study, Mossy Bank Park continues tothrive with those goals as a guiding principal. A perenniallypopular picnic spot, the park benefitted from a significantupdate in its restroom facilities in 2014. That same year, anew children’s’ playground, as well as an adult fitnesscourse, was added. Additional picnicking and recreationalactivities like fishing are available at the near-by Mossy BankPond site. Reservations for one of the park’s popular picnic

pavilions can be arranged by contacting the Village Clerk. The nature study mission is coordinated through the Ted

Markham Nature Center which hosts nature-themed edu-cational sessions monthly from April to October. The NatureCenter is open most Sunday afternoons during the summer.Additional information on local birds, flowering plants, but-terflies, dragonflies and damselflies, and other natural phe-nomenon are posted at the park kiosk. An extensive arrayof hiking trails covers the upper portion of the park; andmore trails are being developed to reach the farther loca-tions within Mossy Bank Park. Mountain bikes are allowedbut no motorized vehicles or snowmobiles are permitted onpark trails.Local residents and visitors alike will enjoy visiting Mossy

Bank Park. Additional information about the park, featuredactivities, and directions to the park is available online atmossybankpark.com.

The land for the park, 167.5 acres, was donated to the Village of Bath bythe Davenport Estate in 1958.

It was undeveloped until 1963, whenthe face of the cliff was hit by lightning, causing a forest fire that lasted fordays. Roads were cut through thewoods to allow fire equipment to reachthe site of the fire. After the fire wasout, the village board decided to de-velop the property into a public park.

The goal of the park developmentwas to establish a limited recreationarea, primarily for play, picnicking, andnature study, for residents of Bath andvisitors to the area. The topographicfeatures of the park do not lend it tomore intense use, such as trailer camp-ing, restaurant facilities, and playingfields such as baseball and football.

The park was developed to includepavilions, picnic areas, playground, restrooms, hiking trails, and a scenic overlook.

The pond site of 14 acres was pur-chased and a 5.22 acre pond was con-structed in 1966. It provides water forfishing, outdoor activities, and fire

protection. The Mossy Bank Nature Center was

constructed in 1998 to provide a settingfor indoor study of nature, displays, ac-tivities, and programs of interest forthe public.

The Nature Center was renamedthe Ted Markham Nature Center in2007 to honor Ted Markham, an origi-nal park committee member, who hascontinuously worked on the ongoingpark development.

The Village of Bath and variousgrants, such as through the US De-partment of the Interior, Bureau ofOutdoor Recreation, have funded thedevelopment of the park.

The park is open from May 1through October 14, 10am-10pm.

The area that was to becomeSteuben County in the lastdecade of the eighteenth cen-tury was part of the territorycontrolled by the Seneca Indi-ans, the western most nation ofthe Iroquois League, prior tothe American RevolutionaryWar. For several centuries theyhad been the dominant nativeAmericans in the north east. Ascolonial settlements developedalong the eastern seaboard, conflicts occurred with the In-dians. At the time of the war forindependence from England, the lands west of the MohawkRiver were not part of colonialNew York and held native vil-lages and hunting lands. Major

Indian villages were located atCanisteo and Painted Post andonly a few trails ran throughthe wilderness. In the 1770sthe Senecas, who were the mostnumerous of the Iroquois, gavetheir support to the English.Because the Indians maderaids on the border settlementsand took pioneers and theirfamilies as prisoners, GeneralGeorge Washington sent troopsunder the command of GeneralSullivan to the area to destroytheir villages and drive themfrom the area. This providedsome of Sullivan’s soldiers anopportunity to see the richriver valleys and the fine cropsthe Senecas were growing. AtNewtown (near Elmira) amajor battle of this campaign

ing enthusiasts, motivated in partby a common concern over therapidly dwindling population oflocally-built wooden boats, com-mitted to establishing a museumthat would preserve the boatingheritage of the Finger Lakes Re-gion of New York State. The mu-seum founders, all active in the

“antique boat world,” felt that a museum focusing onthe impact that recreational and commercial boatinghad on the development of the lakes and tourism inthe Finger Lakes Region would increase appreciationand awareness as well as help preserve these vintagecraft. motorcycles that are on display. On July 4th,1908, Curtiss gained notoriety of a differentkind when he flew his flying machine, namedthe “June Bug”, a distance of over 5000 feetto win the Scientific American Trophy. The Village of Bath is very proud tohave three historic districts and severalother individually listed properties onthe National Register of Historic Places. The Bath Historic Preservation Com-mission is charged with overseeingchanges to the exterior of these exam-ples of our historic past so that the his-toric character of the village remainsintact. Historic Preservation is not forus but for the many generations thatwill follow. What will they see? Build-ings that have been drastically modifiedto the point of being unrecognizable?Gaping holes in our streetscape? Mod-ern buildings next to historic buildings?Or will they see well maintained his-toric buildings with original architec-ture representing our past? It is aproven fact that in places that have well

maintained historic districts that theeconomy improves, housing values arehigher and businesses are more prof-itable. As a gateway to the FingerLakes Region, Bath can become one ofthe places that people come to visit forits architectural and historic heritage. It is the mission of the Bath HistoricPreservation Commission to preservethe numerous historic buildings for fu-ture generations. The Bath Historic Preservation

“June Bug” is one of severalhistoric aircraft on display. Glenn Curtiss won world

recognition as an aircraftbuilder and pilot in 1909when he won the GordonBennett Trophy for speed atthe First International Avia-tion Meet held in Reims,France. During this flight heachieved the breath-takingspeed of 46.5 MPH (he went90 MPH faster on a motorcy-cle two years earlier).Back in the states, a year

later, Curtiss again furtheredhis eminence as a pioneeraviator by making the firstlong distance flight in Amer-ica, between two cities. Heflew from Albany to NewYork City with one stop, for atotal distance of 150 miles towin a $10,000 prize and theScientific American Trophy(again). In 1911 he masteredthe technology associatedwith taking off and landingan aircraft on water, therebymaking the “seaplane” andlater, the “flying boat”, a

practical reality. Seaplanedevelopment led Curtiss toan association with the U.S.Navy that began when hetrained their first pilots andbuilt the “A-1”, their first air-craft. Today, he is acknowl-edged as “The Father ofNaval Aviation”. Visitors tothe museum will also see afull-scale reproduction of thisfirst naval aircraft. Addi-tional Curtiss aircraft in thecollection include a 1912“Pusher”, a 1913 “Model E”flying boat, a 1917 “Jenny”, a

1919 “Seagull” flying boat, and a 1927 “Robin”. From theCurtiss-Wright era (post1929), included are a 1931“Junior”, a ¾ scale P-40 andlast – but certainly not least,a C-46, WWII transport (thisaircraft will actually be seenfirst, because it guards themain gate). In addition tomotorcycles and aircraft, vis-itors will also see antiquetools, toys, boats, home-fur-nishings, fire equipment andmuch more. There’s some-thing here for everyone!

The Bath-Hammondsport area is rich in history andscenic beauty, and offers a wide range of real estateopportunities.

Both villages have established historic districts and a va-riety of historic, residential, agricultural, recreational andcommercial properties can be found.

The properties also include year-round and seasonal prop-erties along the shores of Keuka Lake and other smaller lakesin the area.

The demand for lakefront property continues to rise, par-ticularly on Keuka Lake, which is noted for its water qualityand its pristine beauty, and lakefront property values are ris-ing correspondingly.

Both large and small farms are available in the predominantly rural countryside, as well as country homesthat run the gamut from well-maintained stately structures toold farmhouses in need of some fixing up.

Hunters and nature-lovers can find cabins on or neargame-filled wooded acreage.

Large and small parcels of open and wooded land can alsobe purchased for recreational use or residential construction.

In certain areas, mobile homes are available for purchaseor rental in well-established trailer parks.

Within the villages of Bath and Hammondsport, residen-tial properties range from apartments to historic old build-ings, with short-term or long-term rental always an option.

took place. Many of the Indi-ans and their families wereforced to flee to the areasheld by the English. Some ofthe soldiers were to return inthe following decade to settlein Erwin, Caton, Canisteoand the lower Conhocton valleys.

When the war for inde-pendence was won by thecolonies, the English aban-doned their Indian allies. The

new United Colonies werethen able to begin negotia-tions for the land formerlyoccupied by the Indians. Ac-tually these lands west of thepreemption line, so called be-cause it marked the divisionbetween New York State andlands to the west that wereclaimed by the State of Mas-sachusetts based on a formergrant from the King of Eng-land, were in dispute. By1788, an agreement wasreached that allowed treatiesto be made with the Senecasfor Massachusetts’ agents to

purchase lands and whenproperties were sold, thenthey would come under thecivil government of New YorkState. The sale of these landswas begun by the Phelps andGorham Land Office and sev-eral parcels were sold bythem in what becameSteuben County. By 1791, thesuccess of their venturefailed and the 1,200,000acres that became known asthe Genesee Country cameup for sale. At this timeRobert Morris agreed to pur-chase the tract from Phelps

and Gorham and soon trans-ferred it to the PulteneyLand Syndicate, a group ofEnglish investors headed bySir William Pulteney.Charles Williamson, a Scots-man, agreed to come toAmerica, take out citizenshipin the new country, and be-come owner of record of thetract as well as land agentfor this huge Genesee Coun-try. Williamson with his fam-ily and a group of 30 hardymen came into the area andbegan a settlement on 15April 1793.
