Fan CoilsEVAPCO Air Solutions a/s has delivered fan coils for the offshore industry for the past 15 years. The products delivered are condensers, evaporators, heating and cooling coils fitted with fans. The choice of materials for off-shore installations are vital for the equipment’s lon-gevity.

FinsMaritime environments are one of the reasons for short lifetime when inappropriate materials are used. When corrosion begins, the fins exhibit reduced heat transfer and thus a lower efficiency of the coil. Tests conducted in a salt spray chamber confirmed that a pretinned copper fin give superior resistance to corro-sion.

TubesThe coil tubes in addition to being resistant to maritime atmosphere, must also be resistant to the medium inside the tubes. For condensers, evaporators and heating coils it is sufficient using pretinned copper or CuNi alloys. For seawater cooling coils however, it has been problematic finding materials. Previously, CuNi alloys were rec-ommended by experts, then SMO took over as the best material. We have trailed materials in a salt spray cham-ber and came to the conclusion that Titanium is the most resistant material.

CasingThe casing and the fan coil will also be exposed to a maritime atmosphere, therefore we use corrosion resistant steel with extra strengthening in the most exposed points.

Fans/motorsWhen selecting fans/motors we use a special soft-ware to design and ensure good quality and also to optimize the fan selection. Zone definition, temperature and type of protection will dictate the type of motor as well as materials for the fan unit.

Resistance to corrosion for metallic material for seawater bearing pipes

The Graph below illustrates different ranges of application for metallic sea-water bearing pipes. The diagram refers to straight, smooth pipes and is schematic. This information was given at “The 7th Scandinavian Corrosion congress”

WWMarine fouling problems can be minimized in titanium condensers or heat exchangers by always operating at water velocities in excess of 4 ft/sec (1.2 m/sec) throughout the exchanger. High velocity 9 ft/sec (2.7 m/sec) water can kill small barnacles (1- to 2- mm size) already attached to a heat exchanger surface.

The ability of higher velocity water to prevent attachment or actuality kill barnacles already attached is very dependent upon whether uniform velocity conditions exist throughout the heat exchanger.

Tube obstructions, dead end areas, and similar configurations are points where marine life can establish colonies even when there is high velocity flow through the tubes. Heat exchanger design of waterside passages can, therefore, significantly increase or decrease the fouling characteristics of the system.

Complete shutdown of the heat exchanger for an extended time period appears to be 100% effective for killing fouling organisms such as barnacles and for preventing initial attachment. How long animal organisms can live under stagnation conditions in a heat exchanger would have to be established by further study.

The time period is probably a function of the oxygen content and the nutrient characteristics of the particular water. In view of the findings, it is recommended that chlorination should be considered for fouling protection in any titanium heat exchanger where seawater velocities of less than 4 ft/sec (1.2 m/sec) are anticipated in the tubes. For higher operating velocities, chlorination might also be considered as a possible deterrent to the gradual long-term build-up of fouling organisms in low velocity areas of the water boxes and tube sheets.
