Where imagination and innovation knew no bounds

Thomas Andrews had one aim - albeit an almighty one: To build the biggest, most luxurious, most technologically advanced ship in the world. No mean feat in 1909.

He set to work in Harland and Wolff’s magnificent Drawing Offices at Belfast’s Queen’s Island. And emerged with:

A ship almost 900ft long - the length of 3 football pitches. 175ft high – 5 feet higher than Nelson’s Column in London, and 46,328 tonnes in weight – 40,000 cars.

With 16 watertight compartments, 4 enormous funnels - each wide enough to drive a Belfast bus through it! 29 boilers, 5 miles of deck and a 22 tonne bronze propeller.

This would be the ship to outdo all other ships.

Where people dreamed the impossible… and made it happen

Working on the ‘Big One’ It was a 6am start, 6 days a week for 15,000 shipyard workers who proudly went to work on the ‘big one’. For over two years, the men worked on every detail of the ship’s construction on the slipways. Skilled workers earned £2 per week, unskilled, £1 a week.

Around 3,000 local craftsmen and tradesmen helped carve, hammer, weld and shape Titanic’s shell. Brute force came in bucket-loads. Skill by the sackful. And pride seeped from every pore. The result was the biggest man-made moveable object of its time.

On 31 May 1911, Titanic was launched into Belfast Lough. It took just 62 seconds, helped by the 22 tonnes of fat and soap used to lubricate the slipway. Due to her unprecedented size, Thompson Dry Dock was specially built to house her for completion - an engineering achievement in its own right.

Belfast says ‘Goodbye’2nd April 1912.

Titanic leaves Thompson Dry Dock in Belfast. 100,000 people lined Belfast Lough to wave her off: This ‘new wonder of the world’.

She set sail to Southampton where passengers couldn’t contain their excitement. Imagine standing on the dock, as this almighty vessel sailed toward you, towering over you, engulfing the entire harbour. The biggest ship you had ever seen.

Next stop Cherbourg – the waters were too shallow for Titanic to dock so SS Nomadic tender vessel transported the 1st and 2nd class passengers out to Titanic while SS Traffic carried the 3rd class passengers.

A quick stop was made at Queenstown, Cork, now known as Cobh.

Then it was onward toward New York.

The Atlantic Crossing had begun.

913 crew and 1,316 passengers were aboard the maiden voyage.

325 First Class passengers.

285 Second Class.

And 706 Third Class.*

Captain Edward Smith boasted: “Not even God himself could sink her”.

Belfast and its people had created an icon

For the 3rd class passengers this was their ticket to a whole new life in America. They’d saved hard for every ha’penny of the £3 it cost them.For 1st class passengers, a one way ticket in a Millionaire’s Suite cost £870 – an indication of the luxury that awaited.

Two of the world’s richest men boarded at Cherbourg in France: John Jacob Astor, along with his pregnant wife, and industrialist Benjamin Guggenheim. As did, the ‘unsinkable’ Molly Brown.

Members of Titanic’s Guarantee Group - senior fitters and chief droughtsmen, as well as the ship’s designer, Thomas Andrews - were also on the maiden voyage, sent by Harland & Wolff to deal with any problems.

As this almighty vessel sliced through the high seas, the hopes and dreams of over 2,000 people were onboard.

Imagine the flurry of excitement, boarding passes and farewells on 10th April 1912. The day over 2,000 people set sail upon Titanic

Sunday 14th April 1912, 11.40pm

The Legend

While travelling south of Newfoundland, Canada, at a speed of 20 knots, Titanic met her fate. The ship struck a massive iceberg which destroyed 5 of the 16 watertight compartments along the hull.In just 2 hours, 40 minutes, the entire 46,328 tonne ship had disappeared from view.

Only 713 of the 2229 people onboard survived.

15th April 1912 will never be forgotten.

During her short life, Titanic had captured the hearts and the pride of the people of Belfast. She represented hope, the future, progress. The tragedy was devastating for the city of Belfast.

Titanic’s wreck was discovered on 1st September 1985 by Dr. Robert Ballard and his team, resting 2 miles down at the bottom of the Atlantic.

Investigations of the wreckage indicated that the design and build of the ship did not contribute to the terrible disaster.

This was an important turning point for the people of Belfast who, once more, could be proud of the ship that had dazzled the world.

• An original ticket for the Titanic launch was recently auctioned for £34,000

• SS Nomadic, Titanic’s original tender ship, was built in Belfast and is often referred to as Titanic’s ‘little sister’
