DESCRIPTION

The exposition presents 30 unedited works of art (acrylics on canvas), in which the subject is the theme of “liberation from sin” with the title of Tiqqun (Hebrew). The artistic approach is resultant of a research on the area of “sin/liberation”, in its most diverse interpretations which determine the spiritual rules existent in the history of humanity. This study incites on the Jewish belief of “Isaac Lúria” (XVI century) and in which the characters represented in the pieces of are, cast back into the time they lived in. The message behind the exposition is the relationship bodies/ vestments, and sin/freedom in which the characters open and extend themselves out of the canvas in a thousand colors of light when the spirit thus asks for it. Created the theory of “The color of the vestments free”, the emptied bodies mutilated by guilt seize to exist because sin works in and out in of each being. It is as if the liberation is progressed through the colored vestments and not through the body of each being exposed. The exposition is in the majority made up of feminine figures whose vestments transpire multiple vaults of strong colors as if they freed or exulted sins committed in the past and which flash in ones´ consciouness. In all of them is the black shadow which recuts or makes relevant the affective atmosphere provoking passiveness, euphoria, indigerence and resignation. It is up to each individual person to interpret; select; choose and aculeate the way the figures live out on the plastic surfaces represented be in euphoria be it in lethargic. Maria Sobral Mendonça

Tiqqun

To receive Maria Sobral Mendonça´s exposition Liberation from Sin in Paços de Conselho in Lisbon, was to open the houses of all Lisboners to Culture and Art and from then make a departure point to the world, being that the exposition then goes to Brazil, to Spain, and later to Asia. One can say that once more the historic vocation of this luminous city of the Tagus is to be city of the World.

A free city that frees all senses, and where the departure of the exposition Liberation from Sin by Maria Sobral Mendonça makes all sense. As in Sophia’s Beach “Here time passionately/finds its own liberty”. Lisbon was able to affirm its Liberty several times, without the shadow of sin, surpassing all the oppressions that were attempted.

The thousand colors of the vestments in Maria Sobral Mendonças´ characters are themselves the symbol of freedom, surpassores of darkness, which invariably serves as background.

The rest is up to our imagination, which is the biggest of freedoms.

Vidas inteiras. Organizações. Praxes.

Pecãtum, the disobedience to a specific religion, is very aged, as aged as man. With time, Sin, by all of us done, reformed, and molded itself through gravities. As everything in life. Forgiveness, on the other hand, at the reach of any just person, helped free one from guilt. And help. But liberation dresses an aspiration that comes from long ago, since the survival of the elements of nature, of slavery, the most diverse, and puts one on the right track towards others or towards God. Time had and has it that Sin, as a conscious act of disobedience towards a condemning determinism- a “destiny”- can be torn from its cuffs and make one fly. Create. Free. Only in liberty can one weigh Sin. Arduous task. On one hand it challenges courage and courageous ones. On the other hand it shrivels the mind. Entire lives. Organizations. Praxes.“Tiqquun” Liberation from Sin is exposed. Drowns the look, submerges the soul which makes one happy and dissolves time. It conjugates all the tenses, old and new. The artist shows new territories between forgiveness and guilt through creative borders in an uncompromised historical calendar. She puts to sleep as with a bullet, the myth of perfection. Runs off analogies. Tears with the common globalization, cuts rhythmic order, cadence, of all-equal, enunciating the difference. To be is to able to. To be is to act. To be is assent. Even if before one had a destiny, one gives up ones duty. They are tightened strings, unordered, but cut by the inspiring fingers in minds full of dreams. Even if the look is a sad one, one can see the color of faith in justice, the might in the conquest of rights. They are eyes that pour out light as if singing a refrain.Yes, against the lives that are not! But they are also feminine gifts. They sing the Matria of which spoke Natalia Correia. Sweetness. Softness. Forgiveness. Without fault. Lines of insistent liaisons. Curious interlinks, of feminine curiosity. Painting. In its color, mazed by Alentejo, illuminated in the might of a painter. Exposing is the leaping over of a tough obstacle, which beforehand constituted in creating. Exposing is letting go of a particular hermeneutic and articulating with it the risk of being. There is a worldly vision and time that comes from here, from the origin of the Portuguese language that Maria Sobral Mendonça suggests on the canvas. A Portuguese in the world is not new. The Diaspora is seen, in a shared world whose size is in the head of each person. I don’t see borders. But time, again, will shape more canvasses, leave new messages. After all an exposition is always just a beginning.

Maria’s art is much more than a simple gallery of paintings; it is a web, a text, an enigma, that we unfold as we jump from painting to painting.

It’s the thesis of “TIQQUN”, thirty steps towards liberty.

Our following attitude is certainly to stop and think, it’s going back, re-contemplating seeing our reflection, its certifying that we are involved and in love with this type of art.

Maria wraps us, in this journey, within a veil of mystery, an enigma that we try making out, in which we stay undecided over which painting we like best one.

Maria Sobral Mendonça is not describable through adjectives, she is a reality in our Cultural Portugal, she is a reference.

Pecado grave é a estupidez.

Speaking about, regarding to, or for Maria Sobral Mendonça is an easy task in simple human terms. All of us, who live here, in Monte Azul, know just that. Her portrait as a woman is in everything she does, how she does it and why she does it.Her art, which is striking, is her reflection. It would be pretentious to talk about her; “That her Maria ego is more than she is Maria of herself.”For me being free and a true Christian, within this world I live in, through sin I do not lose myself. I know the way; I treat it like the stubble of a growing beard. Many mortal sins are not much more than lies whose only purpose is to seal eyes and create regret. It is especially in those who look for it in others. Those who say God promises for after death, that which the Devil gives us in life, don’t know a thing about anything, they simply explore that science.A grave sin is foolishness. Foolishness is not lack of intelligence, its resisting it.If God had to hear a woman confessing sins of love, He would listen smiling.

Paco Bandeira Composer, Musician and Singer; Patron of Espaço Monte Azul “Resident Artists” that accepted Maria Sobral Mendonça for de development of this project from December 2006 to July de 2007.

Quais as cores do “i” e do “u” de Tiqqun?

Page 21: "Tiqqun-A Libertação do Pecado / Tiqqun-Liberation from Sin"

21

For a catholic priest, the theme of liberation from sin is not a mere theological concept. It’s in the cassock, in the purple stole, in the roman rite of confession, and it’s in the close listening to the brothers and sisters. It’s in the secret that one must keep usque ad effusionem sanguinis. The secret, secrecy, sacratum, sacramentum! Miserere mei Deus secundum magnam misericordiam tuam...Haneni Adonai!

Maria decided to pick up and develop artistically one of human history’s biggest problems: sin. The greatest sin is not recognizing it, the hybris. There is liberation and a Redeemer. There is a Goel. The power to forgive comes from His rahamim, from his hased, from His mercy. What is the color of mercy? I don’t know. Only artists can define that.

This is Maria’s mission, for God gave her that talent. The colores are like vowels in poetry. The matres lecciones “mothers of reading” are needed to read them. The colors on Maria Sobral Mendonça´s canvases are surely inspiring for many attentive and captivating eyes. Which are the colors of the “i” and the “u” in TIQQUN? They are two radical vowels in human phonetics. I wouldn’t know how to paint them but Maria does!

I see the vowels in Yod and in the Waw of Tiqqun, and I can read them in the name: Yeshu´a. I know what this Name means for Maria and it’s through the intercession of that Name that I pray her exposition be more than a work of art, that it be a manifesto of the beauty of her talent to create.

Sephardites through Painting

The artist Maria Sobral Mendonça echoed, gowns, colors and characters of one of the most dramatic times in Jewish History, the XVI century in the Iberia Peninsula. In Portugal there was 1, 5 million inhabitations of whom around 25,000 were Jews spread out through 150 synagogues.

The Sephardite Jews( which means Spain in Hebrew): Isaac Abrabanel (1437-1508), Treasurer of King Afonso V, Abraham Zacutto(1450-1510), Naval architect, astronomer and historian of King João II, Samuel Gacon, first book printed in Portugal, in Faro, in 1487, Garcia da Orta, Doctor and medical investigator(1501-1568) Pedro Nunes, mathematician (1502-1578), Baruch Spinoza, controversial orthodox thinker, born in Amsterdam to Portuguese parents (1632-1677), Ribeiro Sanches, Doctor and medical investigator, died in Goa, burned at the stake due of his faith as well as his sister Catarina(1699-1782), Beatriz Mendes Nassi Benvieste, gave Portugal commercial monopolization from spices and financed courts, put off the expulsion edicts, forced conversions and burnings. She died in Tiberiedes, then Palestine (1510-1579).

Many other Sephardite Jews contributed to the greatness of the Iberia Peninsula. The majority were expelled, converted or burned at the stake because of the Inquisition.

Joseph Alkastiel of Jativa in Spain, which most influenced Isaac Luria, great thinker and great Cabalist born in Jerusalem in 1534, died in Sfad in Galilee the biggest center of cabala studies in 1572. The big centers of the Cabala in the XVI were Sfad (today Israel), Istanbul in Turkey and Ferrera in Italy, countries where many of the Inquisition victims refugeed themselves.

Maria Sobral Mendonça, take one back, through her canvases, of this dark age in the history of Humanity.

The manifest or material creation is the image of a non manifest or spiritual creation. It is known through science that the universe exploded and continues to do so even now, in expansion. Thus, in a distant time from now, it will be in implosion being that the universe is a sphere in pulsation just as in the other extreme an electron.

In the non manifest or spiritual creation, God, in creating, “exploded” to later “implode”, eventually simultaneously. In both actions He manifests His Love. In the Divine Impulsion all creatures, among which- Humans, collaborate in returning to the Creator. This is “Tiqqunn” according to the Kabala of the Lurid.

The sensibility and intuition of the artist got in touch with the mystery of the “Tiqqunn just as a Cabalist in Meditation.

Tais movimentos irão determinar a personalidade.

Intoductory text to Maria Sobral Mendonça’s exhibition tiqqun (“freedom from sin”)

Sin and guilt are closely connected in our species. Very often Man has a sensation of guilt, and through guilt, a sensation of sin. This is so because “natural” affection neglect brings about more guilt than accusation. Since early times, Man suspects that lack of affection has to do with his sin and he blames himself for it. Sadness emerges so as to evoke a hug. At times, there is no hug and a feeling that affection is precarious sets in. The generated guilt is fixed in the past and has to be exorcised. Such guilt for having sinned brings about an uneasiness that leads the artist to a need for psychological “movements” which will restore his self-esteem. Such “movements” will determine the personality. The latter determines the way in which Man communicates with others and with himself. It determines the manner in which He dresses. For women especially, the colour worn is associated to the need to overcome anguish. Sadness can be turned into euphoria when guilt is placed onto others. It is, in any case, a plea.

Indeed, art is, in many instances, the sublimation of fantasized sin. However, it goes beyond personality and reveals individualism. Often in a surprising manner, the artist creates the “portrait” of not only his soul but also of those who influenced him the most. Then there is a moment of passion, precisely because it reveals individualism from which personality emanates. Confronted with his own “self”, the artist tells us that sin is much more connected to personality than it is to individualism.

Maria Sobral Mendonça’s “Freedom from Sin” evokes self-introspection, confronting soul and body, individualism and personality. It reveals the compensatory movement, in each one of us, that personality really is, in relation to an individualism which is almost unknown to us.

Maria Sobral Mendonça’s “Freedom from Sin” invites each and every one of us to look at ourselves and others, beyond the clothing and the skin. It consubstantiates a true psychotherapeutic moment.

Maria Sobral Mendonça´s dazes us with a magnificent exposition of thirty unedited pieces of art that touch the theme of “Liberation of Sin” very strongly present in Jewish- Christian culture.

As a result of a deep research, a combination of beautiful paintings were produced, in a black and dark background in which figures evolve, the majority being feminine with gowns made up of strong colors and in movement, producing an impressive visual impact, that touch ones´ soul and feelings greatly.

I’m sure the majority of the visitors of the exposition will be fond of having one of the pieces in their home for daily enjoyment and company, not only aesthetically but as well as philosophically.

The exposition represents what is best done in Portuguese contemporary painting and dignifies Portugal as well as the Portuguese as a people.

Whichever one of these paintings, equally compose a reserve of value or investment for the buyer or seller, having in mind not only the quality but also the artistic prestige of Maria Sobral.

Art and economy walk hand in hand many times. The world of art, static, linked to the senses and the mind, interact strongly in multiple economic activities making great works along time, secure applications and value creators.

I would like to wish Maria Sobral much happiness , inspiration and strong will to continue tracing the way that’s been started years ago.

Even if one arduously tries to conceptualize art through a specific theme, which is no more than a simple excuse to start a painting, that theme can never condi-tion aesthetic and chromatic creativity, by hindering its individual reading, always differentiated.

The chromatic symphony of Maria’s works of art, not only shows happiness through painting, but also leads us to think about its inherent forms.

Sins, who doesn’t have them, redemption, we all want it to obtain the happiness we long for. With these paintings happiness comes back and teaches us that it is good to live like this.

Escolhe a cor. Pinta, primeiro, as palavras desoladas de vida, Solidão. Humildade. As casadas, sorridentes pecadoras.

Asmara Women in the Painting of Maria Sobral Mendonça

Oh Maria, you, that conceived, by painting, waving sin stretched over the immaculate womenWith you, we long for the Universal Salvation in the colours,in the infinitely patient gestures of the painter

Pray for us, Oh Mary, who beg for your mercy…Oh Mary, they, who were of divine condition, free of sin, adopt the attitude of slaves similar to menhumiliated…subservientThey abandon themselves to the seduction of the feet, the handsTo them belongs the Name which stands above all namesThe garments of the sinners offer the Will, ours, and that of the women, guardians of the confessional ceremonies, bringing rupture to a patriarchal conception of sin

Fortunate, oh sinnersYou are the greatest sacrament of the hollythe indispensable partition of the righteousthe power of speech…the fasting of bread of the unfortunateIn your garmentsyou laid eyes of all evocationthe encounter of love in radiant deathmutual among believers

You, women who share faithwithout ever finding the meaning of prayerYou are the bitterness, the joy of cultthe stubborn misfortune of the uncleanthe Dei Verbum construction

35

The painting of Maria Sobral Mendonça impresses by the painter’s confinement to a solitary spot in Alentejo. It would be easy to imagine her in Asmara where women cover themselves in cloths, leaning over the Red Sea. At break of day, naked, they wash their garments in the mouth of the rivers. Immaculate, smiling, they wrap themselves once more in those cloths, perfumed by the sent of the brown ochre soil illuminated by an oblique sun.

With her hands, the painter squeezes the brush, chooses a colour. First, she paints the desolate words of life, solitude, humility, living. She paints them in an immaculate, almost warm white, which vibrates while gaining shape, light and colour. The widows of Asmara are accompanied by lions, their garments are not visible. The married ones are smiling sinners, the single sit by the shade of the great dried mud walls, bare foot, and on the sand, they dance, relieved of the remote sin laid upon them by the eyes of the men who long for them.

On the canvas, through Maria’s hand, the gods create a feminine universe, exiled in the tradition of the Asmara women. In the plains of Alentejo, the same feminine rituals of the distant Eritrea regain light. The painter, observant and sensitive, captured reality from afar, brought it to us in a festival revealed by the light of a country, which embraces her and tells her stories. There is no peace in the heart of the Asmara women. They cry for the broken clay in the terra-cotta furnaces, for the wandering children in the streets of Addis-Ababa…their tears, they dry in the long garments that tell allegories of the female natives of Asmara.

A LIBERTAÇÃO.

Page 37: "Tiqqun-A Libertação do Pecado / Tiqqun-Liberation from Sin"

37

tos.

Freedom from sin-liberation from what holds us back as a people

From the Decalogue God gave Moses, which Jews and Christians share, the first commandment invites us to have unconditional love for the Creator and the fourth to “honor father and mother”.

As Pope John Paul II refers in-Memory and Identity: Conversations at the Dawn of a Millennium, in this fourth moral principal, that has been inscribed in Man’s heart for all time, we can discover, as God is infinite, values such as Patriotism.

SIN. Sin is the lack of love that goes against all reason, all truth. We can see how sin has worked its way in the past and in the present against our nation, against Portugal. Sin was present when love was greater for particular interests rather than love for our country, when we ran away from the mission Portugal had for itself, towards other nations, and towards the world. That mortal sin took place with the founding of the Republic in 1910. It wasn’t a simple regime swap. It wasn’t also a physical death; it was the death of a soul, its essence, and its reason for living. On the 5th of October the mission that was in the origin of this country was forgotten. This denial took place when Portugal stepped away from its fundamental nature and tried to establish other types of governments, philosophical politics, completely inadaptable to the original form of government and organization of the Portuguese nation. An attempt to substitute the unsubstitutable; an attempt to substitute cultural and spiritual patri-mony with other nation’s cultural and spiritual patrimonies, that don’t have anything to do with the Portuguese soul.

Besides this mortal sin, that didn’t let the lusa soul live and grow, there are sins we make and commit everyday. When we don’t respect each other, members of the same community, when we deny our past and present culture, preferring what’s not national when we import other countries products in favour of ours, when we prefer other languages to ours; meaning, when we deny and give up our identity for another are we loving Portugal?

REDEMPTION. Sin enslaves and Portugal is enslaved, not by someone else’s fault, but because as a people we do not know how to use our freedom. Redemption from sin would come, after repentance, if the Portuguese were to fight against it in a positive way, in loving their country, with concrete acts. This re-establishing of the true Portuguese soul can only take place when we return to the institution

Page 39: "Tiqqun-A Libertação do Pecado / Tiqqun-Liberation from Sin"

39

at the origin of our country; that which knew how to interpret the will and spirit of our people in the most authentic and democratic way. If those who were sub-jects to the King were considered free, and were to reach him directly, without intermediaries, Portugal would be free from sin and would assume once and for all what was its foundation and this way would return to the pureness of its soul.

The Lusitanian vocation that fills Maria Sobral Mendonça´s heart and soul is reflected in her life and in her paintings which are proves of her love for Portugal.

O sublime saber

41

The sublime knowledge

What makes man withdraw into a life of seclusion, at the boarder of a Nile in this life, into a confinement having oneself as the only company, meditating, in secret, into the sublime hidden science that will give him back the key of life? Nevertheless Isaac Luria did.

What saving doctrine is this, in which a strict circle of cabalists confess-every Friday the impurity of living in a worldly week, as they purify the spirit, initiated to receive the infavel name? Hence whom they also call Yitzhak Ari, experienced the mutual complicity of congregated imperfections in search of fraternal forgiveness.

What a complex formulation that still surprises us, and in which the unity of the soul interiorized by childhood catequism contrasts the doctrine that five souls came from the organs of Adam, the actual notion of soul as the link between the finite and infinite as if the being was but the materialization of a moment, the bodying in spirit of a chance? Hence Sefiroth and his circles of infinite light, the appealing of radiant hypnotics and the return of the eternal begins!

And what do I find in these vagabonding about of erroneous souls, incarnated in what also lives in the fresh flowers, and in the living of rocks and in everything that is on earth, from seed to fossil, from essential poeticness that spiritualizes everything and the multiple reduces to the One?

Maria Sobral Mendonça was able, through her figuration, to transmit this appeal to me in seeing all this, and through her colors more than feeling.

I found her one day, and her inner strength is of one who has a cause and in fulfilling it- a destiny, radiant of enthusiasm. I was in the Gulbenkian gardens, where there exactly nature erupts as a friend, a city an art giving a warm hosting to submerse nomads through what is real and through what is sold out. She spoke of a strange name of Ari Ashkenasi, the “Lion”, I promised, without fulfilling- that I would find out more. She, patiently and amorously, reattributed my silence bringing these paintings so I could write her this note. Refugeed in painting them- I’m embarrassed to think her so confident in that I have been able to understand something.José António BarreirosLawyer

Maria Sobral Mendonça, o Tikkun e a Pintura

Page 43: "Tiqqun-A Libertação do Pecado / Tiqqun-Liberation from Sin"

43

Maria Sobral Mendonça, Tikkun and Painting

When Maria Sobral invited me to make a movie about her painting, she told me her next exposition would be on “Tikkun” or “Tiqunn” - a term that means “Restora-tion” or “Reparation”. Rabbi Isaac Luria, made it known in the mid XVI century, and it is linked with a multiplicity of themes and subjects which lead me to the Ka-bala and dozens of Jewish doctrines.

It would be unthinkable to relate to Maria Sobral Mendoça´s pictorial world without a previous approximation of the theme that lead her to move to Montemor and in blistering cold and torrid heat without any accommodations in a voluntary cloister, which took one year, produce thirty canvases speak of sin and guilt, and show us women whose faces we can only guess, dressed in colourful vestments which seep out the past, characters and situations of drama and transgressions , resentment and liberation which lean towards the purification of the body and above all the soul.

This cabala belongs to the ancient esoterics and tries searching for meaning behind the mysteries and secrets that lie beneath the sacred books of the “tree of life” and the book of “the creation”. Finding out the reason and the meaning of things. A way that can fluctuate between orthodox and heretic, with variations and floatation of schools of centuries.. Some Jewish branches believe that the messianic era does not necessarily involve a person, but instead a period of peace, prosperity, and justice for Humanity. Therefore a particular attention is given to the concept of “tikkun olam”, “fixing the world”, meaning the practice of a series of acts that conduct a more socially just world. This was most preached by Isaac Luria which as mentioned was one of the most studious envoys of the cabala. Intriguingly, and apart from this, one discovers once more that Jews still give great importance to the book and the printed words which they beat to keep from gentiles, and which is guarded as a fountain of supreme power “The name of the Rose” or in the Kabala “The Pendant of Foucault”. Umberto Eco in all of them.

Going back to painting, now that I’ve tried thinking based on a certain perspective and thought especially with a mystic feeling (which will always have different under-standings) I must outline that, what most fascinates me in Maria Sobral Mendonça´s art is her technique, the search for a solid texture, the exercise of the paintbrushes, the spatula, and fingers themselves, the mixing of the paints, drawing a sensuality of obvious colours and shapes, starting figuratively to reach the abstract, in search of

Page 45: "Tiqqun-A Libertação do Pecado / Tiqqun-Liberation from Sin"

45

the “soul” of the canvas. There is in this painter (and woman) a complexity of contemplation and a demanding of attitude which mixes pleasure of living and its refusal, which thickens with the same colores, on a same canvas, virtue and sin, which gathers, against nature, presence and absence, life and death, white and black, all the colores and no colores to finalize with the sensation of exulting life in our own exultation. Even when black is the dominate color on the painting and widowship reigns. In the darkness of mourning, hands and feet rip with violence their own imposition. Regeneration ? Let it be. All ways are ways of some Lord to reach a better world. One can choose his/her way and we can all meet in the end, at the same finish line. Meeting up with Maria’s ways was what I tried doing in coming close to her through the objective of my camera. With all the risks that proximity and difference take. And with the pleasure of discovery too.

The spiritual man has the capacity and the intelligence of understanding that “life is more than the living of a physical body”.Sin- is our natural use of evil against others and pleasure through extremes– in its original symbolism in scriptures, it has been and is referred to as the great Evil. This way being freed from it is intentional and mobile always present, in earthly life, which results from love for oneself and for the other, and which comes from the inscribed ethic and moral values which induce one in noble conducts, in search for interior Peace. This freedom, however, is not simply a direct consequence of the mortification of the body and the denial of its vices. For a true freeing from this enslavement we must also take off the artificial covers, which we use as disguise and that are so in-trinsic to our social representation, by hiding us behind masks. They are especially necessary to those who cannot be individuals within a group, cannot be themselves and are easily led through others´ power.Blessed and happy are those who are courageously free, truthful and simple!!!In paradise, before conscience of good and evil existed, clothes were unnecessary. Value was intrinsic in each individual and one was not estimated on what he/she wore or by fashion accessories. These, nowadays, have the task, especially when wearing certain brands that exclude any true creativity, of showing futile expression of our supposed superiority over others. Much of the guilt we carry comes from not being able to obtain this freedom, the incapacity to see others as our kin and, society, not being able to be unique and ban ourselves from exterior veils.Even if it be a lonesome and painful journey, one has to have the capacity of understanding Darkness, that which encovers and enshadows us, and come out onto the Light, which illuminates and brings with it various interior colours which Maria Sobral uses so well to express herself. It is accepting unconditionally and without fear, that which is diverse, of the various souls, that we can meet as a Whole

The first time Maria Sobral Mendonça invited me to participate in her exhibition, was to lend my voice to read her texts. I did it with the greatest pleasure because as an actress I live on “words”.

She challenged me again, but this time instead of asking me to read one of her texts, she asked me to WRITE one. I stayed three days looking at the paper unable to write one word, I couldn’t do it, and every time I looked at her paintings I panicked.

Her paintings had changed, texture was inexistent, but a title appeared “Freedom from sin”, and I blocked. As I observed the twelve women painted, I found two relevant tones, black, orange and a lighter one, which for me immediately seemed to be the “freedom from sin”.

I realized then, the beauty of these “sinning” women, all the movement, sensual-ity and freedom the painting gave them.

I stayed fascinated with how marvellous it is to be a woman, possess the gift of sinning and be freed from it through the simple paintbrush stroke of Maria’s magnificent hand.

The early teachings leave us no hesitation or doubt over the assessment of the future of the Universe: perfection, as an elementary conjunction of integrant myriad factors. A Universe that was created at the Eyes of the Sacred One- pur-posely unstable and with a need for constant extreme care, from whom, simulta-neously, enjoys that state of Life, spiritually as well as earthly. However there is the human being and his acts of going astray. The perpetrated unbalances that have passed down along the generations came to destroy the solid, illuminated and ancestral Aramaic texts bequeath by Isaac Luria the Jew-ish thinker of the XVI century, founder of the cabal stream originated in Safed. In the past as now, in his foundations of the Cabal, expressed and defined in his Sefiroth or “The Tree of Life2, by work of intermediary agents that permitted the ascension of the different elevatory states in search of perfection, are the doctri-nal principles that we should follow, to return to what surrounds the permanent equilibrium and the radiance of the Divine Light. In this complex journey, the base of redemption must first be a departure from earthly sin-Tikkun Olam-in remission of the registered unbalances and the re-placing of the original values, thus allowing humanity the full integration in the promised Divine Universe.

In the painter Maria Sobral Mendonça exposition there is a whole voyage between redeeming the guilt and consequently the liberation of the soul and body, which she tries to show. The colour and the movement, between games and synergic or chromatic links, make up the elected passport which allows us an emotional transition from that state of perfection which we compulsory seek in our Existence. A trip of shadows, expressions, traces, and states that translate everything that which life should be. Or not…
