Tips to Manage Diabetes Effectively

Managing a chronic disease like diabetes is a challenging task. Diabetics have to perform a

constant balancing act by juggling various aspects such as food, exercise, stress, general

health, etc. to keep the blood sugar levels in check. The key to managing diabetes is to not

get overwhelmed by the disease, instead deal with it one step at time.

Here are few simple steps what will help you keep your sugar levels in check:-

1. Limit carbohydrate intake: - Did you know that carbohydrates causes an instant spike

in the blood sugar levels? Once carbs are digested, it turns into glucose and leads to

high sugar levels in the blood. Most diabetics are under the misconception that,

avoiding sugar is enough to manage diabetes. What they do not know, is that eating

excessive carbohydrates can be just as fatal.

2. Monitoring Blood Sugar Regularly: - Checking blood sugar levels, by doing a simple

blood test at home. This can be done easily by purchasing the blood glucose meters

sold at medical stores. With a glucose meter you can keep track of sugar levels once a

week or if required, on daily basis as well. If your readings are on the higher side, you

can take appropriate measures such as reducing sugar intake and exercising to balance

your blood sugar.

3. Exercise Regularly: - Any kind of physical activity or exercise is a vital part of diabetes

management. Regular exercise improves the body’s ability to use insulin more

effectively. Even light physical activities such as gardening or housework can make a

difference.

4. Schedule routine health check-ups: - If you are diabetic, it is important to schedule a

complete health check-up twice or thrice a year. Physical exams and eye check-ups

are extremely important for diabetics. During a physical exam a doctor will screen your

body for signs of kidney damage, nerve damage, heart disease etc. Also, an eye

specialist will check your eye for signs of retinal damage, cataracts and glaucoma. In

diagnostic centres like Apollo Diagnostics, you can get the entire diabetic medical

check-up done at once.
