tips on how to recruit an athlete
TRANSCRIPT
First and foremost you want to know the
requirements in which you are able to
contact an athlete. NCAA rules say that
you can’t contact an recruit until they
are finished with their junior year of high
school. So be careful, you don’t want to
get yourself, the school, or the potential
player in trouble.
It is essential to know what kind of athlete you are looking for and if they’re actually interested in playing college sports. Using the internet is a great way to get to know players in a specific area. Schools athletic sites will generally post rosters and stats of their players. If you know what kind of player you are looking for this is a great way to do so. There is also a website (www.nsr-inc.com) in which possible recruits pay for in order to get recognized. Which also makes it easier for recruits to scout out new potential players.
The next step is to get in contact with the
player and the coach. The best way to
do so is in a simple letter stating that
you’re interested in their play and ant to
keep an eye on them. A follow up
phone call or even visiting a game could
also show that you’re even more
interested. Not only that but it will boost
the morale and ego of the athlete.
Above all showing interest in an athlete will keep them around making them want to choose your organization. It may sound silly but send them text’s or emails asking how things are going. Asking how events went that you know about from prior conversations. Send them more and more information and keep in contact. Nothing shows that you have more interest in an athlete more than when you keep a relationship with them.
Lastly, you want to be authentic and
true. Nothing keeps athletes around
more than having trust in the
coach/recruiter. Furthermore you want
to be direct as well. Let them know that
they are wanted send the things that’s
say “We want you here!” people
especially athletes love hearing that
they are wanted by a team for their skills.
After the recruit has joined your
institution follow up with him and make
him feel at home. All the things you have
told him/her in the recruiting process
should happen including some of the BS
you may have told them.
