VARY YOUR VOLLEYSMost players practice one kind of volley: the kind that's hit right tothem. If you want to improve your net game, practice the types ofvolleys you see in a match. Here are four you need to master:[1 J The low volley that dips toward your sneakers; [2 J the floater,at head level or higher-it looks easy, but players often flub it; (3Jthe stretch volley, which you'll find yourself hitting on passing-shotattempts; and (4 J the reflex volley that comes right at your chest, andquickly. Fora closer look at these volleys, and the technique needed tohit them, visit TENNIS.com/yourgame and watch my video.

THINK SPEED, NOT STRENGTHWhen players go for a big serve, they generally try to muscle the ball. They tense up and often hold their breath when swinging. Instead ofthinking about pummeling an ace, relax and move your racquet faster.Try exhaling as you swing and developing an easy, fast motion witha lot of racquet-head speed, not a tense, aggressive, hammerlikeswing. Once you've mastered this, you'll hit your serve with moreconviction and no longer feel like you're swinging so hard.
