In his current role, he assists students and alumni on a number of levels. In addition to providing instruction on the use of the available career resources, Swensen also assists in developing and refining resumes, cover letters, and other application materials. He works closely with students to provide guidance in the process of identifying and advancing in a fulfilling career path. Due to his extensive professional experience, Swensen is a source of knowledge in many areas and thus capable of leading students by accessing his own background experiences, successes, and failures. Immediately before joining the University of Dayton School of Law, Swensen spent three years practicing commercial, medical malpractice defense, and real estate litigation in Kansas City. During this time, he was with Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin, now known as Husch Blackwell, where he represented a number of big name clients including Applebees, Hallmark Cards, and Kansas City Power & Light. Prior to that, he was a mental health therapist in Darke County, Ohio and a clinical psychology intern at the Indiana University School of Medicine. When Swensen decided to pursue law he attended Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tennessee. As an active member of his law school, he was an editor for the Journal of Transnational Law, a class representative for the Student Council, and the President of the Honor Council Team. In addition to his duties at the University of Dayton School of Law, Swensen has published essays in a number of outlets, including the following: the University of Dayton Magazine, the Cup of Comfort anthology, and Ohio Magazine. He holds a MS from Penn State University and earned his BA with highest distinction from Purdue University. While Swensen himself certainly benefits from his own diverse background and experiences, it is evident that the students who turn to him for guidance benefit too.
