Tillage and PlantingProducts Catalog

There was a time when farming was done at a slower

pace. It was a time when horses and oxen provided

the pulling power and farmers walked the field behind

them. Fields were tilled with a single coulter blade

fastened in front of a plow that would cut through

crop residue and break up clumps of sod prior to

turning the soil. And we were there.

In 1884, Steven Ingersoll took over a small coulter

disc manufacturing company in Sandoval, Illinois.

The discs produced there were the state of the art,

back then, but everything was about to change.

In 1905, the company moved to Galesburg, Illinois,

was renamed the Galesburg Coulter-Disc Company, and

grew very rapidly as farming was changing dramatically.

By 1920, tractors were now pulling coulters

through the soil faster and faster, slicing through

fields and slamming into rocks at a pace nobody

could have imagined just a few years earlier. The old

discs, with their old steel were wearing out too fast

and breaking too often.

Enter the next generation.Roy Ingersoll, Steven’s son, began experimenting

with new heat treating processes and improved

manufacturing techniques. These resulted in discs

that could hold their shape and sharpness under the

most demanding conditions. This new technology,

made it possible to create blades that were slightly

cup shaped (concave) to more aggressively manipu-

late the soil.

Since then, farms have continued to increase in

size, tractors have continued to increase in power

and Ingersoll has continued to improve our blades to

meet each of

these new chal-

lenges. Today,

the Ingersoll

Tillage Group is

built upon the

legacy of Steven

and Roy Ingersoll.

A History of Innovation

Our North American manu-

facturing center is the most

modern in the industry, on a

site that has been producing

tillage and planting equip-

ment and components for

over 100 years. Proud of our

heritage, we are dedicated

to serving the farmer

through innovation in new products and support.

New steels, new processes, newadvantages for the farmer. At Ingersoll, we use an advanced proprietary boron

steel alloy that’s the best in the industry. This very

special steel alloy means that our blades are among

the hardest you can buy.

Hard steel is a good thing. But a disc also has to be

flexible to resist chipping in rocky soil. Disc metal has

to possess a quality that material scientists refer to

as “fracture toughness” - the ability to resist fractures.

No farmer wants to pick up broken disc shrapnel

with a harvester at the end of the season.

Hardness. Flexibility. Sharpness. Ductility. Fracture

toughness. We know of no other disc you can buy

that matches us in all of these critical properties.

Unparalleled manufacturing quality. For the very best coulters and discs, advances in

material science have to be matched with advances

in material handling and manufacturing processes.

This is where we excel. Our metal forming and heat

treating operations as well as robotic cutting and

grinding machines produce strict dimensional control,

edge sharpness and wobble tolerances that exceed

every OEM specifications on the planet.

Sharp and strong, all day long.

Concave discs are used to pulverize andsmooth the soil. Large diameter discs, some-times called plowing discs, cut deep into thesoil and turn it as they go. They’re usedwhere extensive soil disturbance is desiredand the farmer’s goal is to bury the residuefrom the last crop.

The Ingersoll family of discs includesplain edge discs, notched edge discs andthe new SoilRazor disc, all in a varietyof sizes and styles. You’ll also find spe-cial metals, like our new RollableBoron discs and special surface treat-ments like the DuraFace.

Best of all, because they’re made by In-gersoll, you have the assurance that theyare manufactured to the highest standardsof quality and sharpness and uniformityfeaturing the best steel formulations in thebusiness.

Something for every farming application.

Coulters come in a wide variety of sizesand shapes. The right coulter for yourapplication depends on your soil com-position and humidity as well as the cropyou’re planting, the residue from your lastcrop and your choice of farming tech-niques. Plain coulters provide excellentpenetration and cutting ability with verylittle soil disturbance while wavy coultersdisturb the soil to a much greater de-gree. Of course, the depth of the wavehas a lot to do with how much the soil isdisturbed. Fluted coulters are some-where in between.

ResidueRazor™Take a close look at the two disc bladeedges below. The one on the right side hasthe unique Ingersoll ResidueRazor™ edge. The one on the left is an ordinary edge, thekind you’ll find on many competitive blades. Now imagine that you’re out in the field, cut-

ting through the residue of last season’s crop.Which blade would you rather have? With theone on the left, you’re missing the point. With the ResidueRazor, we use carbide

cutters to create an edge that’s five timessharper than any ordinary blade. So when a ResidueRazor goes up against

genetically engineered corn or soybean

residue, it’s no contest. Wheat and barleystraw? Like a hot knife through soft butter. And because ResidueRazor blades aremade by Ingersoll, they’re made fromIngersoll’s own proprietary boron steel –amazingly hard and flexible at the sametime. Not to put too fine a point on it, but if

you’re looking for sharp performance from along-lasting, efficient, high quality blade, there’s only one that makes the cut. To order discs with the ResidueRazor

edge, talk to your Ingersoll sales rep.

RadialRazor™Ingersoll Innovations

The RadialRazor from Ingersoll features apatented asymmetrical wave pattern. In the illustration at the right, notice the dif-

ference between the rising slope of eachwave and the descending slope. This allowsthe blade to cut progressively at higherspeeds with minimum effort, reduced soilstirring and reduced humidity loss.

In wet or dry earth, the RadialRazor worksregardless of soil type or degree of residue.Because of the patented wave pattern, side wall compaction has been reducedover typical wavy coulterdiscs. It’s another excit-ing innovation fromIngersoll.

Rollable BoronA genuine benefit to boron alloy steel is itshardness, and our exclusive boron alloy isas hard as any disc steel made in the world. The only problem with hard steel is that

it’s almost impossible to roll the edge to afine sharp edge. Until now. Ingersoll metal-lurgists have worked tirelessly to develop analloy with the toughness and durability of

boron while maintaining the ability to roll theedge. This means that if you can enjoy thebenefits of boron alloy steel and still refreshthe disc edge in a roller. Rollable Boron discs are available in the

sizes shown below. For custom sizes, seethe ordering chart on page 34 of this cata-log.

DuraFace™ Discs — PlainThe patented DuraFace process yields adisc that’s nearly as hard as tungsten car-bide but without the brittleness. What’smore, it’s almost as corrosion resistant asstainless steel but without the high cost.

The result is a disc like nothing you’veever seen before. It lasts a long long timeand remains sharp even when it faces offagainst the worst soil conditions you canthrow at it.
