Unfortunately, wehavehad to experience firsthandhow war memo-rialshavebeendestroyedanddesecratedinourowncountrywhi le "memorialsinhonorof theunknowndeserter"havebeenceremoni-ously dedicated inBremen, Hamburg, and Bonn. This despicable behav-ior isprobably unthinkablein any other country. (It mustbenoted:UpuntilDecember31,1944,therewere1,408 desertersregisteredinthe Wehrmacht out of approximately sevenmil-lionmembers of the Wehrmacht duringnve years of war!) Nootherpeoplehadbeensoaudaciouslyand(whichembarrasses me)so successfully liedtoasthe German people after 1945. Despitethe latest sources,the historical picture has not been corrected. Withthe help of alot of formerpropaganda people of the ThirdReich,the "reeduca-tion" wasacomplete success. Traditionissmiled at;the achievements of the Wehrmacht and of our entire peoplein World War 11arerecognized, at best,byour former opponents.Insome cases,they are even admired.
