Cape Town and the Western Cape.If you’re not inspired, you’re not here.

We are a region of unlimited potential. And this translates into unlimited opportunity. Whether your interest is in travel, business, export or film, Cape Town and the Western Cape has something to interest you. Let Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, help you discover the opportunities.

We have the Western Cape government’s mandate to support film promotion and production and work closely with other provincial and national counterparts such as the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), to make South Africa a film friendly destination. South Africa has eight international co-production treaties: Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, France, Germany, New Zealand and United Kingdom.

In 2010 we were proud to help launch the Cape Town Film Studios which is the first custom-built Hollywood-style film studio complex of its kind in Africa, with state-of-the-art support services. Situated in Cape Town, which topped the prestigious New York travel list for 2014, it offers a unique opportunity for filmmakers to take advantage of our moderate Mediterranean climate, stunning variety of locations, superb expertise and state-of-the-art facilities at a fraction of what film-making traditionally costs and competitive film incentives.

Cape Town and the Western Cape has been the host to many productions including Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Safe House and 24: Redemption.

South Africa has a vibrant film and television industry that is growing in reputation and is internationally competitive. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie or shoot a TV show here than in Europe or the US.

South African films and television productions have attainedsubstantial global recognition including an Academy Award forbest foreign language film in 2006 for Tsotsi, Oscar-nominatedfilms like Yesterday, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. The documentary film A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. South Africa’s documentary and factual films continue to be selected for screening and receive recognition at international festivals including IDFA and HotDocs.

Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative filmmaking, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including District 9, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture; Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus.

Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, television, commercials and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure, good weather and an incredible and stable film and TV production incentive that ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the kind of production and nature of ownership.
