This is the perfect week for Tidbits to examine these three colors and their meanings and usage. • The red of the American flag is symbolic of valor and bravery, while white signifies purity and innocence. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice. • Canada’s current maple leaf flag of red and white has only been the country’s official flag since 1965 when it was proclaimed so by Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to that, Canada had used the Canadian Red Ensign since 1870. Red and white are the official colors of Canada, declared by King George V in 1921. • Red is the color of blood and fire and often symbolizes love, passion, and romance, as well as strength, courage, and leadership. It’s associated with anger, danger, and malice as well. • There are hundreds of varieties of red wine grapes, each offering a different flavor to the beverage. The region of Bordeaux, France, is the original home of many familiar red grapes, including the cabernet sauvignon, which contributes a flavor of black currant, and the merlot, which offers a hint of chocolate or fruitcake. Bordeaux is the world’s major wine capital, where Bordeaux wine has been produced since the 8th century. …turn the page for more

CROSSWORD

Canadian Tid-bits▶ Point Pelee, a peninsula that extends into Lake Erie in Ontario, is the southernmost tip of Canada’s mainland. It’s on the same latitude as northern California and Rome, Italy.

▶ During World War II, the Netherlands sent Queen Juliana over to Canada for safekeeping. To say thank you for sheltering her, the Netherlands sent over a gift of 10,000 tulip bulbs. They continue to send more bulbs every year, resulting in the Tulip Festival in Ottawa every May.

▶ The word ‘Quebec’ comes from the Algonquin word ‘quebecq’ which means ‘the river narrows here.’ Quebec City is located at a bottleneck in the St. Lawrence River.

▶ A statue of Samuel de Champlain in Ottawa depicts the explorer holding an astrolabe, which is a kind of compass to the stars used for navigation on the ocean. Unfortunately, the astrolabe in the statue’s hand is being held upside-down.

▶ Canada is almost 30% larger than Australia.

RickyReviews~Squires Four Pub~

Squires Four Pub is where you want to eat in Vernon, enjoy their adventurous menu featuring the best burger, wings and fries in town, amazing appies, and traditional English pub fare all in the comfort of their Old English Style Pub. “I counted over 60 menu items from their kitchen...Impressive. The high ceiling, multi level oak adorned seating space lends itself to a delightful open airy atmosphere. Their summertime patio gives you a wonderful view of Swan Lake. The service was bang on and by the way... try their bangers and believe me, you’ll get your steak & prawns the way you want them done here. Kudos to their high quality and very talented chef. The owner, Mr Serry Massoud, is a delightful gentleman and is often there to greet his many guests. Impeccably clean & spacious washrooms with quaint seating. I was very impressed with everything. If you’re from the area or traveling through Vernon, Make Squires Four one of your stops for breakfast, lunch or dinner... They take pleasure in providing a warm sociable atmosphere, with very reasonable prices and tastefully prepared meals. Squires Four is just north of Vernon on Highway 97, at the top of the Okanagan Valley. “I guarantee you will be delighted.”

DOLLEY MADISONIt’s a week for honoring patriots and we’ve chosen Dolley Madison, wife of the fourth U.S. President James Madison to highlight. • Raised in a conservative Quaker family, at 21,DolleyPaynemarried fellowQuaker JohnTodd,a Philadelphia lawyer. The young couple had two sons during the next three years. When a yellow fever epidemic raged across Philadelphia in 1793, Dolley lost her 29-year-old husband,three-month-oldsonandbothin-laws,andwasa widow at age 25 with another young son tosupport.

• The following year, Dolley met and married a43-year-oldContinentalCongressdelegatefromVirginia, James Madison. After eight years in Congress, James Madison retired from politicsand the couple moved to his Virginia plantation whenDolleywas30.Madison’swithdrawalfrompoliticswasshort-lived,asjustfouryearslater,hislong-timefriendThomasJefferson,newlyelectedas President, asked Madison to serve as Secretary of State. During the widowed Jefferson’s termof office, Dolley frequently acted as hostess for official functions at the White House. By the time her husband James was elected as President eight years later, she was well-known as a charmingand elegant hostess.

• Dolley was praised for her hospitality as thePresident’s wife, and she soon became known as the “First Lady,” the first time this term had been used for the chief executive’s wife. Her husband’s popularity grew as a result of her many social graces. She also redecorated the White House’s public room in a grand style, suitable for entertaining diplomats.

• Dolley was the first President’s wife to set theprecedent for a First Lady to become involved in social issues and special projects. She ledthe fund-raising efforts for the “The Corps ofDiscovery,”betterknownastheLewisandClarkExpedition,theexplorationofthenewly-acquiredLouisiana Purchase. In addition, orphaned girls of Washington,D.C.foundahomeinafacilitythatDolley helped establish.

• ThetraditionofAmerica’spresidential inauguralballs began when James Madison was elected to his second term. She hosted the celebration at Washington’sLong’sHotel,with400ticketssoldfor $4 each.

Q: Toby, our newly adopted 2-year-old beagle isstealing my daughters’ underwear and chewing on it. I’ve bought more underwear for my daughters in the past few months than I have for their entire lives. I’m finding more underwear in the back yard than I am in their dresser drawers. This dog has a million toys, plus rawhide to chew on. What should I do?

A: The problem you describe isn’t as uncommon as you might think. If Toby is simply chomping on the unmentionables, then moving them to the lawn, it’s like burying bones in the yard; this is what dogs do with their favorite things.

Dogs live by their noses, and your pup is smitten with thesmell.Youcan’tturnoffadog’snose, butperhapsyou can substitute something more suitable for the underwear. Urge your daughters to religiously pick up their underwear daily, and toss all dirty laundry into a dog-proofbin.Alsoencourageyourdaughterstoplaywith Toby. Hopefully, when they put their scent on his toys, perhaps Toby will search for these toys rather than underwear.

Driving Hands has been a beneficial business to the Okanagan over the last few years. They have grown to be a substantial company with quite a few employees and a lot of cars on the road. If you have had too much to drink give them a call, they will take you and your car back home safe.

Vic & Zoe from Driving Hands

This past weekend they made a phenomenal number of calls and probably saved some lives. Vic has become a friend of mine and I give him kudos. Driving Hands is a great Okanagan business that saves lives.

Til next week in the Okanagan, Luv’ ya ....Marty Kelly

afire by British troops. Dolley further won the hearts of Americans by rescuing from destruction the historicGilbertStuart full-lengthportraitofGeorgeWashington as well as the original drafts of the DeclarationofIndependenceandtheConstitution.

• After James Madison’s presidency, the couplereturned to their Virginia plantation. Over the years, Dolley’s son Payne Todd, who had never found a career, had accumulated massive debts through gambling and alcoholism, which her husband had handled while keeping them a secret. Todd was finally sent to debtors’ prison, and Dolley had to be informed. The plantation was mortgaged to pay his debts. When Jamesdied in 1836,Dolleywas facedwith financial poverty from the debt.
