DESCRIPTION

A Religious and Cultural Interpretation of Reba Dance

    Abstract

"Reba", a folk dance prevalent in Changdu district, east of Tibet, is mainly characterized by a lineage organization which roams about trying to make a living and spread religious beliefs

by performing. It typically takes the form of a dance accompanied by music with "men ringing

the bells and women drumming and dancing in a circle". With a long history and rich contents,

Reba dance is widely spread and highly skillful, boasting a lot of characteristics which no other

Tibetan dances can match. Now Reba dance is one of the most representative forms of Tibetan

song and dance performances. In addition, the profound social connotations and deep cultural structural relationship that it implies have made it well worth researching.

Tibet is set against a Buddhist history of more than one thousand years and has long been pursuing tribalism and theocracy. All the Tibetans are religious and they engage themselves in religious practice before ghee lamps, among mulberry trees, or anywhere else, and beliefs in

"reincarnation and karma" have filled the spiritual world of the whole Tibetan society. Folk arts

nurtured in such a socio-cultural environment are often interrelated in innumerable ways with

religion. And as a representative example of such folk arts, Reba dance can show a clearer

context of them in revealing the deep structural relationship between arts and religion. This

article will explore it from the following aspects.

    1. A faithful record of Reba the musical dance

    2. A research into the origin of Reba dance and the Kagyupa representative "Mila Reba"

    3. A verification of Wula Reba in ritual activities of temples

    4. An investigation of Reba among monks

    5. A research on religious rites in the folk roaming Reba
