Tibetan Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism are the three branches of the Buddhism. The Tibetan Buddhism is more than 18 thousand years old in the broad sense. Once there was a religion called “Ben” rooted in Tibet, and there exists a book written in that time named which is the classic book of Ben and the book recorded the history, religion, and culture of Tibet. Then, in the 8th century, Indian Buddhism was carried into Tibet and there the Buddhism and Ben encountered and they absorbed each other then resulted in Tibetan Buddhism. That’s the formation of Tibetan Buddhism. Then in the following centuries, different kings ruling Tibet took different attitudes toward Tibetan Buddhism. Some kings approved the development of it and policy people to pay tribute to it while some others opposed Buddhism and killed monks. Now, with time flying, there are 5 branches of Tibetan Buddhism formed out of various beliefs. And Lama is a name we can read from time to time in the religious books about Tibet. It’s a Tibetan word that means monk. At present time, people call the monks in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia “Lama”. Around the Yuan dynasty, 700 years ago, the tradition of reincarnation of living Buddhas was established. Living Buddhas is the name of Tibetan monks leading a branch or a temple. There are more than 160 living Buddhas in the most prosperous time, but there were only two who were named by the emperors of Qing dynasty. They two living Buddhas are called the Panchen Lama and Dalai Lama. Dalai the 14th is in exile in India and Banchen the 11th is in China now.TRANSCRIPT
