Confession (based on Psalm 51)

P: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your unfailing love; C: according to Your great compassion, wipe out our sin. P: Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, C: have mercy on us. P: Create in me a pure heart, O God, C: and renew a steadfast spirit within me. P: Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, C: have mercy on us. P: O Lord, open my lips, C: and my mouth will declare Your praise. P: Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, C: have mercy on us. Amen.

Absolution (based on Psalm 103)

P: The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He does not deal with you according to your sins, nor repay you according to your iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove your transgressions from you. According to this Word from the Lord, and by the command of our Lord Jesus

Christ, I, a called and ordained servant of the Word, forgive you your sins in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. Bless the Lord, O my soul! Bless His Holy Name! Amen. P: Every word of God proves true; C: he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Amen. (Proverbs 30:5, VBS key verse)

Greeting and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Almighty and everlasting God, You often find us and others wandering from

teacher to teacher, from truth to truth, searching for Your true Word. Grant that all who seek for a deeper knowledge of the sublime wisdom of Your eternal Word may be found by You, who sent Your Son to seek and to save the lost; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Psalm Reading Psalm 119:140–144 (ESV) 140Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it. 141I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. 142Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. 143Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. 144Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live. C: Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your Word is true. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was is the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Proverbs 30:1b–5 (ESV) 1The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out. 2Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. 3I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. 4Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?

Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know! 5Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Luke 7:36–50 (ESV) 36One of the Pharisees asked [Jesus] to eat with him, and he went into the

Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. 37And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he

was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”

41“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: Every word of God proves true; C: he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Amen. (Proverbs 30:5, VBS key verse)

Sermon “From Complacent to Curious”

Confession of Faith Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.—And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.—I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
