The work toward becoming whole engages the three insights of 1) WHERE DID I COME FROM?... why do I feel what I am feeling?, 2) WHAT AM I BECOMING?... looking toward the future with the tools and strategies essential for a loving relationship with oneself and others, and 3) WHAT IS?--knowing what I am feeling and who I am in the present, free of the fantasies of past and future. WHOLENESS is active participation in the PRESENT, while walking the PATH of LOVE. This presentation touches upon the traditions of Sufism, Buddhism, and Depth Psychology and inspires us to engage in the delightful work of watchfulness and wakefulness lifting the Veils of Illusion and freeing the heart to truly LOVE.

Page 1: Three Fold Path To Wholeness

The work toward becoming whole engages the three insights of

1) WHERE DID I COME FROM?... why do I feel what I am feeling?,

2) WHAT AM I BECOMING?... looking toward the future with the tools and

strategies essential for a loving relationship with oneself and others, and

3) WHAT IS?--knowing what I am feeling and who I am in the present,

free of the fantasies of past and future.

WHOLENESS is active participation in the PRESENT, while walking the PATH of LOVE.

This presentation touches upon the traditions of

Sufism, Buddhism, and Depth Psychology

and inspires us to engage in the delightful work of watchfulness and wakefulness lifting the

Veils of Illusion and freeing the heart to truly LOVE.

My heart, aflame in love, set afire every heart that came in touch with it.

~ Hazrat Inayat Khan

Whether your destiny is glory or disgrace, Purify yourself of hatred and love of self.Polish your mirror; and that sublime Beauty from the regions of mysteryWill shine as a flame from your heart as it did for the saints and prophets.

Then, with your heart on fire with that Splendor, the Secret of the Beloved will no longer be hidden.

~ 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jami

"The dream was always running ahead of me.

To catch up, to live for a moment in unison with it, that was the miracle." ~ Anais Nin

Page 7: Three Fold Path To Wholeness

If you do, everything will become dark before you.

When your object is, or seems to be, In a mist, do not cover yourself with clouds

Because your object seems far off.

If you keep your light clear, Then the ray shooting from your own soul

Will in time clear the mist.

Page 8: Three Fold Path To Wholeness

But if you yourself are in confusionWhether to have this object or that object or no object,

Then there is no hope for you.

You must ever bear in mindThat the light and life that go out from you to the object

Are quite as important as that light Which comes to you from the object.

~ Hazrat Inayat Khan

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream ofthe future, concentrate the mind

on the present moment.”

Buddha

Compassion is the active principal.

How do I engage the present? What is it I do that affords me the

opportunity to be in the Now?

Page 12: Three Fold Path To Wholeness

Much of our clinical work is geared toward accessing the present

in lieu of living in the illusions of the past or the future.

Page 13: Three Fold Path To Wholeness

Hindus speak of Maya the delusion,

Taoists speak of the 10,000 things.

CBT, DBT, and EMDR are all techniques

that push aside the tendency of the psyche to engage in the defenses of lies,

to live in a world strengthened by clarity of mindfulness, and to no longer be hampered by the

negative associations tied to the traumatic incidents of the past.

We begin in the name of Allah, the most merciful, the most compassionate.

In a similar manner the Clinician can work through insight and affirmation with the qualities needed by the Client

gifting them tools to move more freely into the future.

If Fear is the challenge, then Courage is to be cultivated. If holding or control is impairing the Client, then acceptance is to be cultivated.

Page 19: Three Fold Path To Wholeness

Within the use of any therapeutic technique Compassion for others and ultimatelyfor ourselves is the means by which we and our clients can engage in the Work.

This truism is from the perspective of the Client and the Clinician alike.

Empathy is defined by Kohut (as cited in MacIsaac and Rowe 1989) as, "the capacity to think and feel oneself into the inner life of another person" (p. 15)

"... In my early professional years Iwas asking the question: How can Itreat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in

this way: How can I provide arelationship which this person mayuse for his own personal growth?"

~ Carl Rogers, On Becoming a Person

The natural tendency to become Whole is facilitated by the compassionate witnessing and the gentle guidance of theClinician for the Client.

In this envelope of Love the Client is encouraged to loosen the chains that bind and begin to enjoy their creativebirthright and freedom.
