St. Francis of Assisi was asked one day as he was weeding in the garden, What would you do if you knew the world was about to end?St. Francis replied, Continue weeding my garden of course. The implication was that Francis didnt have to rush around like a headless chicken putting his house in order. Francis was already living his life in a state of readiness, and he had no need to worry himself about the end of the world. Today we are told what it might be like at the end of time. There might be wars, earthquakes famines plagues and Christian persecution. In fact it doesnt sound too dissimilar to the state of affairs on our daily news programmes. Should we be concerned? Jesus points to the end of history and declares that the future holds a time of reckoning. Like the disciples in todays reading, we are tempted to ask when that time might be, only to be told that its something that shouldnt concern us. We mustnt listen to those who claim, The end is nigh…” instead we must always focus on what there is left to do. The basic premise is that we should keep on doing right, regardless of the circumstances. Like the people in todays gospel who were so pleased with their temple, we are often pleased with what we build up here on earth. Jesus takes the opportunity to point out that everything man made will come to an end. We would be much better off focusing not on a material agenda but in developing a faith that will endure great adversity. If we are ready for Gods final judgment then we shouldnt be afraid of anything that is ahead of us. Global disaster, wars and earthquakes should hold no terror if we trust completely in God. Our lives are like a garden filled with good things we must nurture, and bad things we must weed out. When the end of time comes, we must face our mortality as Francis suggests, weeding lifes garden and living in readiness. Weeding Life’s Garden . . . . . St. Francis of Assisi was asked one day as he was weeding in the garden, “What would you do if you knew the world was about to end?” St. Francis replied, “Continue weeding my garden of course.” The implication was that Francis didn’t have to rush around like a headless chicken putting his house in order. Francis was already living his life in a state of readiness, and he had no need to worry himself about the end of the world.

Today we are told what it might be like at the end of time. There might be wars, earthquakes famines plagues and Christian persecution. In fact it doesn’t sound too dissimilar to the state of affairs on our daily news programmes. Should we be concerned? Jesus points to the end of history and declares that the future holds a time of reckoning. Like the disciples in today’s reading, we are tempted to ask when that time might be, only to be told that it’s something that shouldn’t concern us. We mustn’t listen to those who

claim, “The end is nigh…” instead we must always focus on what there is left to do. The basic premise is that we should keep on doing right, regardless of the circumstances. Like the people in today’s gospel who were so pleased with their temple, we are often pleased with what we build up here on earth. Jesus takes the opportunity to point out that everything man made will come to an end. We would be much better off focusing not on a material agenda but in developing a faith that will endure great adversity. If we are ready for God’s final judgment then we shouldn’t be afraid of anything that is ahead of us. Global disaster, wars and earthquakes should hold no terror if we trust completely in God. Our lives are like a garden filled with good things we must nurture, and bad things we must weed out. When the end of time comes, we must face our mortality as Francis suggests, weeding life’s garden and living in readiness. Question of the week -

How can I best continue this positive and joyful Jubilee Year of Mercy throughout the rest of my life?

In the event of an emergency when a priest is urgently required and there is no answer at the above telephone number please ring St Mary’s (200416) or St Peter’s (01273 452654).

Office Hours : Monday - Wednesday & Friday 09.30 - 11.30am

Fr Daryl’s Surgery this week : None this week, sorry.

Newsletter Editorial : Items for possible inclusion in the Parish Newsletter (if there is room) need to be received (in writing please) at the Parish Office by midday on Wednesday.

General Parish Information . . . . . Parishioner Registration : Every household within the Parish is requested to complete a ‘Parishioner Registration/Census’ form so that our Parish records may be kept up to date. These forms can be found in the church narthex and should be completed fully before being returned to the Parish Office. Should you move address within the Parish at any time please complete a new form and write ‘AMENDMENT’ across the top of the form. Thank you.

Hospital : Parishioners are advised that our local General Hospital (Worthing) in Lyndhurst Road does not give the names of inpatients to the Chaplaincy Department. This means that should you find yourself admitted as an emergency case to the hospital you will need to inform the staff that you wish the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy to be informed, either yourself or through a relative. If you are going into hospital as a ‘planned admission’ you are strongly encouraged to contact the Parish Priest well beforehand so that, if appropriate, the Sacrament of the Sick can be celebrated beforehand.

Infant Baptism : Infant Baptisms are intended for the children of practising parishioners only and are celebrated on five occasions during the year after parents and godparents have completed a course of preparation. There can be no celebration without this important course. The dates of the courses for the current year can be found in the application form in the church narthex (bright green). Baptisms do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Sacramental Preparation : Notice of the availability of application forms for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist will be made in the Parish Newsletter between the school Summer Half Term and 31st August each year. Possible candidates for Confirmation should respond to the announcements made in the Parish Newsletter during the Autumn school term. Parishioners are advised that it is very difficult to imagine that any family/individual who is not regularly practising their faith as a member of our community could possibly be ready to celebrate a Sacrament of the Church.

Marriage Preparation : Marriages are celebrated by appointment with the Parish Priest. It should be remembered that in the Diocese of Arundel & Brighton twelve months minimum notice is required before a marriage may take place; this is a requirement of the Church for all marriages that involve a Roman Catholic (even if they are not taking place in the Catholic Church). It is also necessary that one of the parties must have a meaningful connection with the Parish. Marriages do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Church Mouse (cub reporter). . . The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .

Slightly less hectic but still a very full week, here at the Presbytery this time around . . . .

Monday morning Fr D seemed to be spending all his time putting his clothes in and out of the two big white boxes in the utility room - I couldn’t see what all the fuss was about but he seemed to have a great sense of achievement when he’d finished!

On Tuesday morning after celebrating Mass in St Charles’ Fr D went across to St Michael’s, Durrington, to join all the other priests in the deanery as they celebrated the traditional November Mass for all the deceased previous clergy of the deanery. All across the diocese at the same time all the priests were celebrating similar Masses in each deanery. Following Mass the clergy held their normal monthly meeting which Fr Terry Martin chaired as the newly appointed Dean of Worthing. Topics this month covered such things as school Masses at Chatsmore School, Advent Reconciliation services across the deanery, numbers for the Confirmation ceremony next year and proposals for a Deanery Marriage Preparation Course. After the meeting the clergy had lunch together before returning to their respective parishes.

On Wednesday Fr D went across to Hove after morning Mass to deal with anything new in his ‘in-tray’ at Bishop’s House. He was delighted that a particularly difficult case had now reached the point where he could begin working on his judgement and he hopes to be able to call the judges to Hove for a decision before Christmas. In the evening Fr D met with the parents of this year’s Reconciliation children to finish their ’input’ before the children celebrate their First Reconciliation on 26th November. There will be a Children’s Reconciliation Service at the Holy Family at 11.00 on that Saturday and ALL those children of the Parish who have celebrated their First Reconciliation and are still at Primary School are invited to come along to celebrate God’s forgiveness once more.

Once again, having celebrated Mass, Fr D went across to Bishop’s House before coming back in the afternoon to a special meeting of the Governors of St Peter’s School to discuss the situation of the school regarding a proposed Multi Academy Trust. Fr D has been attending quite a few meetings since the beginning of the summer regarding this and he was reporting back to the governors on what has been discussed so far and what steps are next. These are particularly awkward times for schools as the government continues to push developments in the field of education . . . . . . .

Mass may be offered for both the living and the dead and also for most other intentions. We do our best to try and accommodate specific dates but this can be especially difficult on weekends and at less than three months notice.

‘Mass Intentions’ are published in the Parish Newsletter on the weekend before they are celebrated although sometimes a Requiem Mass will ‘bump’ an intention to a later date.

Remembrance Sunday 2016 . . . . . Remembrance Sunday is the second Sunday in November, the Sunday nearest to Armistice Day 11th November. Various concerts, church services and commemorative events take place across the country on this day to remember the men and women who gave their lives in combat. On this day we are asked to pray for all the many victims of war, both friend and foe.

Fr Daryl will, this year, be preaching the homily at the Remem-brance Day Service tak-ing place at St Michael’s, South Street, Lancing this Sunday (13th). Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial 14.45.

Service 15.00.

It would be good to see a large turnout from the Parish.

Parish Christmas Bazaar 2016 . . . . P A G E 6

As we move closer to this year’s event we need to ‘step-up-a-gear’ in our preparations:

Make sure that you have taken at least three books of Grand Draw Tickets to sell to family, friends and work-colleagues - this is by far the biggest money-spinner of the event! And don’t forget if you’ve filled in the ticket stubb correctly and you are the seller of the winner ticket then you too will win a prize!

Now is the time to look at the lists posted in the narthex to see if you could offer to donate one of the prizes we need or perhaps an item in the Christmas Hamper?

We are also looking for parishioners to staff the stalls on the day - it would be particularly useful to have some fresh faces ‘step-up’ so that skills and knowledge can be passed on. Have a look at the stall slots, don’t be shy.

We need parishioners to donate items to ‘stock’ the various stalls - toys (working), puzzles (complete), books (suitable material), fancy goods, boxes of choco-lates/sweets, bottles (sealed and in date), home-made preserves - bring any of these along with you to Mass on Saturday/Sunday (in a carrier bag please).

Any cooks/bakers please consider making cakes of any description (cup, fairy, flap-jack, sponge, chocolate & especially fruit) - these can be dropped off at the Holy Family Parish Centre on Friday 2nd December between 14.00 and 16.00).

PLEASE We need your

help to make our Bazaar a success !

Parish Roundup . . . . . P A G E 5

Holy Family, North Road, Lancing Mass 10.30 Sunday

St Charles, Chesswood Road, Worthing Mass 18.00 Saturday

NOVEMBER MONTH OF THE DEAD - November is, of course, traditionally the month in which Catholics throughout the world make a point of praying for those of our family, friends and relations who have died and gone before us. During our weekend Masses our Parish Book of the Dead will be brought up with the gifts at the offertory and be placed on the sanctuary. One of the Masses each weekend will be celebrated for these Holy Souls. CARDINAL CORMAC DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY MASS - On Sunday 27th November Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor will be celebrating Mass at 16.00 in Arundel Cathedral to celebrate his Diamond (60th) Ordination Anniversary with his former diocese. All those who wish to attend this Mass are warmly invited (please remember to give yourselves good time to find somewhere to park - it is always difficult in Arundel). JAM JARS WANTED - Could we ask parishioners to save any empty jam/marmalade jars (and lids) over the next few weeks and bring them to the kitchen in the Holy Family Parish Centre (clean please). We are lucky to have a parishioner who will fill these with new ‘homemade’ preserves so that they can be sold at the Christmas Bazaar - they are very much sought after! JAM/MARMALADE/CHUTNEY MAKERS - Any other parishioners who are marmalade/jam/chutney makers who could provide a few jars to sell would also be most welcome. ARUNDEL & BRIGHTON DIOCESE AND THE REFUGEE CRISIS - A Refugee Crisis Newsletter for Autumn 2016 is available at the back of the church detailing how, as a diocese, under the guidance of Bishop Richard, we are responding to the ever growing challenge of the global refugee crisis. The newsletter includes the latest information available to us and highlights some tremendous work that is ongoing by the partners we are choosing to work with. Please take a copy and share it with family and friends. Anyone who wants to learn more about how to get involved should contact our Coordinators (details on page 11). BOSCO CATHOLIC EDUCATION TRUST (BCET) - The recently formed Bosco Education Trust are seeking to appoint Trust Board Directors. For more information please go to the St Philip Howard Catholic School website: www.sphcs.co.uk or contact David Carter at [email protected] (tel: 01243 558205) or Marie Ryan at [email protected] (tel: 01293 511130). Further information on the narthex notice board. LOVE IN A BOX RESULTS - Many, many thanks to all those parishioners who responded to this year’s ‘Love In A Box Appeal’ and filled a shoebox with small gifts for disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe to be opened at Christmas. A total of eighty boxes were donated along with £180:00 in donations. The boxes were collected for the journey to the children from the Holy Family on Friday (11th). PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES (OCTOBER 2017) - After having been asked by several parishioners to organise another Parish Pilgrimage to Lourdes Fr D is trying to gauge the interest and see if it would be viable. To this end there is a poster on the narthex notice board with a list for names of those parishioners who would be interested. The pilgrimage would need to have at least twenty parishioners taking part, would last from Monday to Friday and would be in one of the last two weeks of October next year (2017) - the exact dates are not known yet due to flight timetables. Please ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICES - With the season of Advent fast approaching the Parish has two Reconciliation services planned. On Saturday 26th November there will be a Children’s Reconciliation Service in the Holy Family at 11.00 - all those children who have celebrated their First Reconciliation and are still at Primary School are encouraged to attend. On Friday 16th December there will be an Adult Reconciliation Service in St Charles’ at 19.30 - this service is suitable for all those between 12 and 99 years old and will have visiting priest in attendance to help. These are great opportunities for us to ‘make a straight way for the Lord’ spiritually and to get ready for his coming at the nativity this year.

DEACONS’ THOUGHTS . . . .

Remembrance Sunday is this weekend, when once again we remember those who have given their lives in times of war. Often we think of both World Wars, but we should include those who have died (or suffered) in all conflicts. Christ himself gave us the example of suffering and death as a way to give others freedom. In times of war death may be expected, or at least, the possibility of it accepted; lives sacrificed to fight earthly evil.

Talking about death is almost a taboo, and thinking about and planning for death is difficult. But the Bishops of England and Wales have launched a new website about death, called ‘The Art of Dying Well’ (www.artofdyingwell.org). It offers the Church’s teaching on death and the spirituality that we should (as Christians) hold on to when facing the inevitable end of our earthly life. Life is a journey, and death is not the end; the journey continues on to a final destination.

That destination should be a place in heaven with God himself, together with the saints and all our loved ones that have gone before us. We leave this earth, our possessions, our friends and family too; but with the sure hope of eternal life, promised at our baptism. Life guaranteed by the death and resurrection of Christ; an eternity without the worries and pain of this world.

It is not morbid to think of death, and I am reminded of Luke’s gospel passage on the Transfiguration. He speaks not of death, but of Christ’s ‘passing’. He uses the Greek word ‘Exodus’ and links his teaching with the salvation journey to freedom of the Hebrew people.
