9 am, the morning before bingeing on grilled hotdogs, burgers, and Uncle Sam approved beverages, the Murdick’s Run the Chop Challenge is the perfect way to start any 4th of July festiv-ities with an air of accomplish-ment and giving back to the community. The race is a 5 mile loop around West Chop, beginning at the Tisbury School on Spring Street, about 5 blocks up from the boat dock. Meant for the whole family, it kicks-off with a “Fun Run” for children beginning at 8:30 am. Mike McCort, the general manager of Murdick’s Fudge and the primary coordi-nator of this event says the Fun Run is a chance for kids ages 5-12 to participate and a personal favorite as well. “The kids only run about a block (around the school) and we always like to have more of them,” Mike adds. A Fourth of July theme will complement the race’s celebra-tory spirit, with a life size Uncle Sam cheering on the runners. Just make sure you are hydrating properly, as it is the 4th of July and the high for the day will be 79 degrees Fahrenheit. The $20 registration before July 4th or $25 the day of the race, and the $5 for the Fun Run

are going to benefits and pro-ceeds, which usually gross about $10,000 each year. All ofthe money raised goes back into the community and is split evenly between The Boys and Girls Club of MV and the Rotary Club of MV. The Boys and Girls Club’s proceeds go into working with the youth of the community. “They support little league, kids programs and the schools,” says Mike. Likewise, The Rotary Club of MV generates about $50,000 annually for the island commu-nity, money which is then put into scholarships and leadership retreats for local high school students. About half of the turnout for this 5 mile race and community organized event each year are islanders, age 12 to 94, many who are returning runners participat-ing in order to show their dedica-tion to helping their community while promoting healthy living. Mike’s claim to fame is,

“I run the race, I just don’t run in it,” although he doesn’t want to take all of the credit. “I wouldn’t have been able to organize the whole event without the help of volun-

teers, especially Cathy O’Sullivan who has been in charge of the registrations, and the track and field coach from the local high school. Also the race would not have been possible without Pete Lambrose who works with the Boys and Girls Club,” claims Mike. According to him, 100 percent of proceeds from runners go to charity—Murdick’s covers the rest. Questioning your ability to crush the competition? The old-est runner last year was 94, and there is a runner this year who registered at age 86. But, don’t let those ages fool

you, this race is competitive. Mike mentioned that

“the event has been registered with the U.S. track and field association as a 5 mile race, just in case some-one breaks a world record!”

There will also be awards handed out to overall winners and age group winners alike, the motto of the race being, “Set

Goals…Make Commitments…Persevere.” There are three sponsors for the event, MVY Radio, Martha’s Vineyard Online and the Vine-yard Gazette. So, Give back to your com-munity and demonstrate your love for America at the same time by giving the “Run the Chop Challenge” a go this year, after all what do you have to lose?Register now at Murdicks.net!

Step foot into One World Trading Co. and your senses will be bom-barded with rich colors and patterns. When your eyes navigate through the abun-dance of goods, you’ll find bright fabrics, beads, silver, and much more. Lori Katsounakis, own-er of One World Trading Co., began collecting ideas when traveling to Ecuador and Guatemala, importing

items for inventory. Kat-sounakis now attends large trade shows in Boston and New York City to select ethnic themed pieces for the shop.

“We have so much to see. Every time you come in you can probably see some-thing else,”

says Katsounakis. One World Trading Co., previously Third World

Trading, aims to find a vari-ety all natural fiber clothing from around the world. From silk, to hemp and lin-en, everything is free trade. There is also

an assortment of locally made items from Martha’s Vineyard and Rhode Island. Both their stained glass and handblown earrings are from local artists while the world toys and musical instruments are from across the globe. “There are things from all over the world. Just growing up here my whole life, I don’t think you would find them other places. I see a lot of stuff in here that I think is really unique” says one seasoned customer. Differing from many shops on Martha’s Vine-yard, One World Trading Co. began as a winter shop for locals. It is now open year round, thanks to many year-long residents who have claimed it as a favorite.

“You see a lot of the same faces and cus-tomers” says Katsounakis. But the storefront’s bright, catchy appearance attracts many

who pass by, reflecting the distinct cloths, jewelry, and toys inside. There are plenty of unique items for anyone in the family, ranging from beautifully patterned sarongs to embroidered in-dian shirts for men. While adult’s tied dyed leggings

are stacked in one corner, a rainbow of kids clothes are hung in another. Big bead-ed necklaces cascade from the ceiling amongst painted wooden birds and paper lanterns. One World Trading Co. has an endless array of handcrafted boutique items, clothing, jewelry, and more. The sensation of exotic scents and vivid colors will not be found elsewhere on the island. Although the items are plentiful and varied, they share the same high quality and bohemian features that have kept the store around for over twenty years.

equipped with a scenic view of the beautiful edgartown har-bor, Quarterdeck is a must-see while visiting the island. the hut is located in front of seafood shanty and it’s eclectic menu features fried clams, burg-ers, seafood, and lots of other fried treats. created back in 1960, Quarter-deck is the oldest burger stand on the island. it offers more than the average burger stand though, with fried des-erts like choco-late onions and oreo cookies. a lot of the diversity on the menu can be attributed to chef John petrosinelli, who prides himself on his creativity in the kitchen. this Week recently sat down with petrosinelli and talked a little about his work as Quarterdeck’s chef.

TW: How long have you been working here on the island?JP: 13 years, I came over here from my original home in Provi-dence, Rhode Island.

TW: What inspired you to become a cook when you were younger? JP: My family owned a bakery so being around food at a young age inspired me to begin making my own cre-ations.

TW: What kind of food do you like to cook at home?

JP: I really like to cook Northern and Southern Italian food like Lasagna and Carbonara.

TW: What are some of Quar-terdeck’s best sellers? JP: The deep-fried Oreos and deep-fried chocolate chip cook-ies have been really popular. Our

overall best seller though is the Colossal Burger, which con-sists of two beef patties, lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, four pieces of cheese, four onion rings and barbecued mayonnaise.

TW: What are some of the new choices being offered on the menu? JP: We are offering yogurt-based smoothies for the first time this year. The best seller out of those has been the Elvis peanut butter banana smoothie.

TW: Why do you think Quar-terdeck has stayed around and been successful for so long? JP: I think a major reason is because everything we serve is fresh and we are constantly trying to come up with new and innovative ideas.

TW: Does Quarterdeck have any advantage that puts it over the competition? JP: We are open later than most other Edgartown restaurants. We are open till 11 on weeknights and to 2 a.m. on weekends.

One of the best ways to end a hot summer day is by eating some ice cream with friends and family. The Vineyard makes it easy in most towns, with ice cream shops seemingly appearing on every corner. Until recently though, there has been a lack of ice cream spots on Oak Bluffs’ dockside marina. That changed in 2010 when Jere-miah McCarthy created the Sweet Spot, which he still runs with his wife. “As the only ice cream store on the harbor, we’re a nice place for people to come get ice cream and not fight crowds on main street,” McCarthy said.

A duel candy/ice cream shop, the Sweet Spot cer-tainly lives up to its name. Behind the counter, rests 32 flavors of ice cream. Cold drinks are also available in coolers next to the counter. The Sugar Rush table is covered with all kinds of can-dies. From old-school options like Mary Jane’s and Swed-ish Fish, to novelty items like chocolate seashells and Ring Pops, the Sugar Rush provides enough candy to satisfy any

sweet tooth. A personal favorite of McCarthy’s is the three-foot long gummy snakes. “Kids try to pull out the gummy snakes and they’re just so surprised when the snakes keep getting bigger and bigger,” McCarthy says. Among the ice cream, some of the popular flavors include caramel ex-plosion, cotton candy and cookie dough. The cotton candy ice cream is partic-ularly recommended; this pink and blue ice cream

with optional con-fetti pieces is a delicious treat that’s different enough from the typical ice cream flavors.

“All our ice cream is Massa-chusetts made,

which is some-thing that differen-

tiates us from some of our competitors,” McCarthy says.

There are also specific ice cream op-

tions for people who are looking for low-fat

or sugarless ice cream. Frozen yogurt is also avail-able upon request. With some past expe-rience in retail, McCarthy has a special appreciation for the simplicity of an ice cream shop.

“It’s fun selling ice cream, with ice cream you’re basically selling happi-ness. Everyone leaves happy with ice cream.”

hailing from california, chef Willie gerardo may be a “wash-ashore” to the Vineyard, but his know-how in the kitchen is native to the island. as a chef for the newes from america pub, the kelley house restau-rant in edgartown, gerardo has enjoyed creating high-quality pub food for the renowned co-lonial establishment. the newes is famous for their beer-battered fish and chips and was recently named runner-up to the “best of the Vineyard 2013” title for the best fish and chips. This will be gerardo’s third summer preparing creative and delecta-ble dishes at the award-winning pub, where he enjoys spending his time in the fast-paced and friendly environment. Join us as chef Willie gerardo shares a few of his island favorites with this Week, and be sure to visit him at the newes.

ct: What is your favorite dish to make at the newes? WG: I enjoy making the daily specials.

We serve prime rib every Saturday night and try to incorpo-rate local seafood into most of our specials. My favor-ite dish to prepare is sautéed scallops with creamy risotto and asparagus.ct: that sounds delicious! With all of the wonderful choices on the menu, is there one item in particular that you find yourself recommending time after time?WG: I really enjoy all seafood dishes. I don’t think I could pick just one.

ct: in that case, it sounds like you are in the right place to eat! how did your career as a chef begin? WG: I started as a dishwasher and worked my way up the culi-nary ladder. I attended culinary school at the Oxnard College of

Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management in California, but I had been preparing food in a professional atmosphere long before I went to school.

ct: how did you end up on Martha’s Vineyard?WG: A good friend of mine worked at the Harbor View Hotel as a corporate chef and told me that I needed to learn from the best and experience life on the Vineyard. I followed him out here and have continued to come back every summer since then.

ct: What do you like most about MV?WG: I am a pretty shy and quiet guy, so I enjoy the peace of the island. I like to go up-island and admire the scenery, and I often walk to the Edgartown Light-house to sit and relax. Anyone who is on the MV should check it out.

the newes does not take reser-vations. see you there!

Enjoying the show at the Mar-tha’s Vineyard Film Center guar-antees a fantastic night out with friends and family. The theater officially opened its doors last September, debuting during the Vineyard Haven Film Society’s International Film Week. Because this will be the first summer that the theater is open, the Vineyard Haven Film Society has big plans for the season. The center–a state of the art digital movie theatre with 180 stadium-configured seats—is a social center for all moviegoers.

In a recent interview, assistant creative director Steve Zablotny said that the Film Society “finally has a home” and invited all ages to enjoy the five-star experience. Moviegoers can view many of the best in independent films, movie classics, documentaries, and world cinema at the MV Film Center. Films will be shown seven days a week now through September. Out of respect for the established businesses in the shopping center, films are shown after working hours. In addition to offering an enriched film program, the Vine-yard Haven Film Society presents film-related speakers, educational programs, and special events to

promote its mission to increase cinema appreciation. Last week, for example, the theater present-ed Tiger Eyes, the first of iconic author Judy Blume’s novels to be brought to the big screen. Special guest and director Lawrence Blume was also in attendance and facilitated a Q&A after the showing. According to Vineyard Haven Film Society intern Ben Mankoff, the cinema experience brought to Martha’s Vineyard by the Society is unlike most other theaters in the country. Each night a presenter formally introduces the show.

The cinema experi-ence at the MV Film Center is celebrated – be it with a recep-tion, live music, or special guest speaker.

The MV Film Society will soon be premiering “Midnight Showings,” which will – ironi-cally – be shown at 10pm as to not turn viewers out too late in the evenings. Expect cult fiction and classic films, such as Island favorite Jaws, on the big screen this summer. On occasion, movies are sponsored and are able to offer free admission to all. Howev-er, during the majority of the year, tickets can be purchased for $12.00. Members, seniors,

students, and children under 14 can purchase tickets for $7.00. Tickets can be purchased online at mvfilmsociety.com or onsite. Enjoy the show – come one or come all! The theater offers top-of-the-line refreshments – from international fare to locally produced goods, such as raw desserts by Not Your Sugar Ma-mas. Although the theater can fit 180 people, we suggest that you purchase your tickets early. The shows and the experience are a definite must-see!

A couple going on vacation but his wife was on a business trip so he went to the destination first and his wife would meet him the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick email. Unfortunately, when typing her address, he mistyped a letter and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose hus-band had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:

Dearest Wife,Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

P.S. Sure is hot down here.

For 25 years captain John potter has been giv-ing the people of Martha’s Vineyard an affordable, family friendly fishing ex-perience with the skipper. From May through october, the skipper offers two daily trips and provides every person with a rod and bait. bring your own cooler with food and drinks and enjoy the day bobbing in the waters off cape cod while captain potter and his crew roam the boat assisting anyone who might need help and give everyone a personal experience.

captain John nelson assists captain potter in the summers and works as a science teacher at Mar-tha’s Vineyard regional high school in the winter. First mate Jeff will also be on board and this is his fifth year with the Skipper. leaving out of oak bluffs Marina, the skip-per makes a ten minute trip to hedge canyon, a deep ridge that carries a current from new york to nantucket, for hours of fun, fish, and some Jimmy buffett. customers spend the four hour trip reeling in a variety of fish, like sea bass, scup, fluke, flounder and sometimes bluefish. Any fish large enough to keep will be filleted free of extra cost by request. born and raised in hong kong, captain potter spent every summer growing up on Martha’s Vineyard. he also spent time working on fishing and tour boats in the Virgin islands before starting the skipper and hasn’t looked back. For 25 of the last 26

years, it’s been voted “best on the Vineyard”. the cost is $60 for adults and $50 for kids and payments are accepted in the forms of “cash, credit or a christmas card”, and families can have a fishing experience they won’t soon forget. Most of captain potter’s customers come back year after year, like kathy crouch from Whit-man, Ma. “i have two kids and

they practically grew up on the skipper. it’s really a family tradition,” said crouch who comes to Mar-tha’s Vineyard every June and started fishing with captain potter since his first season 25 years ago. captain potter wants his boat to be as family friendly as possible and will even let kids steer when moving from place to place. he also offers charters for birthday

parties and other private events. Spots fill up fast because of the affordabil-ity and unbeatable atmo-sphere, so reservations are recommended. spend a day soaking in the rays, reeling in dinner

and making a family tradi-tion of your own onboard the skipper. summer schedule: 8 am – 12 pm, 1 pm- 5 pm$50/child $60/adult

it’s time to

pARTY Up! So you’ve come to the Vineyard to re-lax, do a little shopping, and catch a sunny day at the beach. Now you’re wondering how to begin your night out. Though only Edgartown and Oak Bluffs have late night hotspots, there is enough variety on the island to accommodate an evening out for anyone. This Week’s Nightlife Guide shows you where to find the best views, cocktails, and live music on Martha’s Vineyard. Best of all, each town’s destinations are within walking distance of one another allowing you to save your money for that cab fare at the end of the night. There are many convenient taxi companies on the island and as always we suggest that if you have been drinking: Don’t Drive.

Oak Bluffs Sometimes you step off the late boat and simply don’t want to waste any more time before starting your evening. Fortu-nately, you can leave the ferry and grab a seat at Lobsterville Grill without ever taking your eyes off the water. Lobsterville offers some of the freshest seafood on the island, no surprise since its backdoor is essentially touching the Oak Bluffs

Harbor. You can sit at the Ship Wreck Bar and watch the local fishing boats come in with a fresh catch that could make it to your plate before the night is over. The Ship Wreck’s specialty cocktails are perfect companions for the busy waterfront. Next door to Lobsterville is The Sand Bar and Grille, literally only a stumble away. The Sand Bar has an outdoor beach patio and one of the best atmospheres on the island. Where else can you dance to the music with sand between your toes and the stars above your head? Their huge outdoor dining area is packed all season long with people swaying to the DJs that spin all summer long at the Sand Bar. While you’re grooving on the dance floor you can peek up to the second floor deck at Nancy’s, your next stop on the harbor! Over 50 years ago Nancy’s started as a small snack bar on the Oak Bluffs water-front. The snack bar still operates every summer but Nancy’s has expanded around it to become one of the biggest restaurants in Oak Bluffs. With multi-level seating both inside and outside, Nancy’s is a staple of island nightlife. Join the crowds on the deck to toss back frozen drinks with cool ocean breeze across your face. Or you can go down stairs to Donovans Reefe and grab a world famous frozen drink and

strike up a conversation with Donovan himself. Up the street from Nancy’s is the Dive Bar, a unique basement bar on the lower end of Circuit Avenue. The Dive Bar fea-tures live bands throughout the summer, many of which are from right here on the island. The hometown music tends to make this spot THE hangout for young Vineyarders and gives the Dive Bar a great local feel. Between songs you can shoot pool, play darts, or order one of Dive Bar’s famous mudslides! Jiggy Sundays goes on all summer, where Dive Bar will be playing the best reggae in town long into the night. Don’t forget to join the Dive Bar Beer Club too! Beer Club meets every Monday night.Above the Dive Bar is The Lampost, a three-tiered club with a huge stage and dance floor, upstairs lounge, and pool tables on the first floor. Lampost might be the best spot on the island to show off your dance moves and its huge floor space makes it a great place to meet the many locals and tourists that crowd through the doors each night of the summer. Another great spot for live music, the Lampost will be pulling DJs and cover bands in from the mainland all season long. And new this year. The Lampost serves food. They have combined efforts with Skinny’s (their

neighbor to the north) on circuit and have a full and very enticing menu. Check em out! Next stop on Circuit Avenue is the Island Bar and Grille. The Island Bar is re-nowned for “Island Night” every Monday where they have cheap beer and awesome prize giveaways. Look for hot dj’s on weekends, especially the holiday weekends when they bring in big talent from Boston and New York. Last year they had an East-ern European night too and it was off the hook. Look for more of these specialty The Look Out Tavern is a mandato-ry stop while you’re on the island. It is the only bar/restaurant facing the ocean making it a popular spot for locals who come for the great food and to catch a Red Sox game on one of the many TV screens around the bar. Or you can just relax and take in the stunning sweeping views of the ocean and watch the boats as they enter the Harbor. The Look Out has a large menu and also serves Sushi. Recently expanded and renovated there is plenty of space inside and out with a huge deck and even several picnic tables. Stop by The Look Out Tavern and see why the locals love it.

Edgar-town If you’re looking for a great place to start your evening we suggest catching the sunset on the upstairs deck at the Sea-food Shanty, located on the bottom of Dock Street right on the Harbor. You can take in the beautiful views and a cocktail while enjoying the Shanty’s great selection of fresh seafood and on some nights, live entertainment. Downstairs you’ll find more dining room seating andthe Shanty’s amazing sushi/raw bar. Both floors sport enough plasmas screens to catch the game from every corner makingthe Shanty a difficult nightspot to move on from. When you do move on, try the Wharf Pub and Restaurant just down the street on Main. The dark wooden walls elicit the feel of a harbor town pub and restaurant that has been rooted on this spot for almost 80 years! Open year round, the Wharf is a popular nightspotfor locals and visitors alike. It fea-tures 3 bars in the summer and easily the most popular dance floor in Edgartown. The Wharf features nightly entertainment, live bands and DJs all summer

long so make sure you don’t skip this Edgartown favorite. Around the corner from the Wharf on North Water St. in the Kelly House Hotel you will find TheNewes from America. Stepping in the door you might get the feeling that you have arrived in the pub in a time warp from the olde days when Edgartown wasa Whaling community as you are met with ancient beams lining the ceiling and old exposed brick lending itself fully to the experi-ence. The pub is a favorite place to dine but also a good spot for aspeakeasy experience with locals and seasoned visitors alike. There is live music on weekends so stay tuned to this paper to see what’s up this year at The Newes From America. A short walk up Main Street will take you to The Grill on Main, a great location for a quiet dinner or a few late night cocktails. Formerly ofFeast in Chilmark, Chef Antonio Saccoccia has taken his talents into downtown Edgartown and now features fantastic New En-gland cuisine just a short walkfrom the harbor. The Grille also boasts a wonderful prix fixe menu offering three courses for under $40. The bar is nowopen late so even if you skip din-ner you can still enjoy the Grille’s great atmosphere long into the evening. TW
