THIS WEEK KAUAI

Kaua‘i’s northernmost point Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge includes a world-famous lighthouse and bird sanctuary. The 160-acre refuge sits 200 feet above the ocean on a peninsula at Kaua‘i’s northernmost point.

Historic Significance This wildlife sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. The Humpback Whale Na-tional Marine Sanctuary also has a presence, with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mam-mals and sea turtles.

Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with prevent-ing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight in 1927 by reorienting the two pilots of the Bird of Paradise. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and is closed on major federal holidays. Turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413, Map C:E20.

2 Kaua‘i top sight

The Napali coastline on Kaua‘i’s north shore stands among the sheerest in the world. The serrated-edged cliffs jut up into the sky and abruptly drop from view into the ocean. The ancient Hawaiians favored these shores because of their easy access to typically “hard-

to-catch” ocean delicacies. Extensive stone foundations and walls can still be found on the valley floors, remnants of once thriving Hawaiian settlements. Waterfalls and swift flowing streams continue to carve out these rugged valleys and shape the shorelines. Although it’s one of the most remote regions in the world, the Napali coastline is accessible by foot, air or sea. Ke‘e Beach is the furthest a car can venture. To the east is Ha‘ena Beach Park with sheltered picnic tables. To the west of Ke‘e Beach is

the Kalalau Trail, a premier backpacking hike. The first two miles of the trail is a popular day hike for many visitors and residents. It stretches from Ha‘ena State Park to Hanakapi‘ai Beach, offering people just a sample of what lies beyond. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail provides the only land access into this part of the island. Traversing five valleys and skirting imposing cliffs with incredible views, it finally comes to an end at Kalalau Beach. An earlier foot trail created by the ancient Hawaiian people who lived in this area linked their settlements along the coastline. The current Kalalau Trail, built in the late 1800s, loosely follows this path. If you’re intent on tackling the entire trail, you should be well prepared with sufficient food, water, shelter and a permit. This intermediate to advanced hike requires hikers to at least be in better than average physical condition. Obtain a hiking permit from the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources office; call 808-274-3444 or visit the website at hawaiistateparks.org.

THIS WEEK KAUAI

Nicknamed ‘‘The Grand Canyon of the Pacific’’ by author Mark Twain, the Waimea Canyon is a majestic sight. The canyon rests at the end of a long, curvy and slowly ascending road up Highway 552-Koke‘e Road, ending at Koke‘e and Waimea Canyon State Parks.

At 10 miles long, a mile wide and over 3,600 feet deep, this mammoth chasm features four-million-year-old lava rock and displays variegated hues of red, purple, green and blue, depending on the weather and time of day. From vantage lookout points, you may get a glimpse of neighboring Ni‘ihau, Waipo‘o Falls, the Kalalau Valley and the Napali Coast. Some of the island’s best hikes are accessible from the park, ranging from starter trails perfect for families, to longer, more strenuous trails for experienced hikers. Since much of Kaua‘i is not accessible by road, this is truly the way to see some of the island’s endemic plants and wildlife, as well as commanding views of Waimea Canyon. Hikers are advised to check weather conditions before getting started. Koke‘e forest is a rainforest, after all, so be prepared for rain and lots of mud! As with any hike, you should take the necessary precautions. Hike with a buddy, bring plenty of water and snacks, and always stay on the trail. You may want to bring a jacket, too—temperatures range from 50-

70 degrees fahrenheit in the fall. If you’re in the mood to stay a while, campgrounds are available at Koke‘e State Park, in addition to a host of other amenities including restrooms, outdoor showers, and picnic areas. Camping permits can be purchased at hawaiistateparks.org. The Lodge at Koke‘e offers two-bedroom cabins, camping, and even a restaurant/bar for those who need to take a break from sightseeing. Visit lodgeatkokee.net for more information. To learn about some of the island’s native plants and animals, stop by Koke’e Natural History Museum. Ask the staff about seasonal activities, and what hike is best for your group. If you want to be sure about their hours before heading out, call 808-335-9975.

The Garden Isle will host several Hawaiian cultural events in the coming months featuring the unique facets of our host culture. Here are the highlights: Eo e Emalani i Alaka‘i, or The Emalani Festival, is an authentic and powerful recreation of a journey embarked upon by Hawai‘i’s beloved Queen Emma in 1871. Led by her guide, Kaluahi, the queen began her excursion on the lush expanse of Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Koke‘e State Park (Map D:Inset). Visitors will relive this experience on Saturday, October 12 as music plays beneath the open sky from 10 a.m. Queen Emma will enter the field on horseback at noon, and offerings of music and hula will continue until she exits at 4 p.m. Hawaiian crafts and snacks will be available for purchase. More information available at kokee.org. The highly versatile, yet humble coconut is celebrated at the 17th Annual Coconut Festival, October 5-6 at Kapa‘a Beach Park (Map B:D6). The public is invited to enjoy a full range of activities over two days. They include cooking demos by Kaua‘i’s top hotel and restaurant chefs, cultural exhibits, live performances, local crafts and lots more for the entire family. For more information, visit kbakauai.org or call 808-652-4988. The group Na Makuakane performs at 1 p.m. on Saturday; Amy Hanaiali‘i performs Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is $3; free for 12 and younger. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.

When visiting new or different places and cultures, one of the easiest ways to acclimate is with dining choices. The flavors of the tropics, along with produce from local farmers, are infused into the many dishes available on Kaua‘i.

AMERICAN Style, Island FLAIROn Kaua‘i, American staples—such as burgers, hot dogs and milk shakes—meet tropical flavors with refreshingly tasty results. Throw into the mix some American comfort foods like meatloaf, pot roast and fried chicken, and you’ll feel like you’ve just discovered a brand new cuisine.

Hawai‘i Regional cuisineHawai‘i Regional Cuisine is a distinct cooking style in the forefront of the culinary world, developed in 1991 by 12 island chefs. These culinary innovators use ingredients from local growers and combine them with cooking methods from each chef’s background, be it Asian, American, Pacific Rim or European.

Farm to TableMany isle chefs use produce, meats and other ingredients grown by Kaua‘i farmers, many of whom grow organic. Farm-fresh flavors are distinct and memorable, plus you’ll get lots of nutritional value in every delicious morsel. Learn about Kaua‘i grown on page 52.

Lu‘auFully experience Polynesian culture at a lu‘au, a fabulous feast fit for royalty and ideal for the family. Try foods like kalua pork and lomi lomi salmon, poi and haupia (coconut pudding).

ASIANGiven the proximity of Hawai‘i to the Far East, it’s not surprising to find the cuisines of China, Japan, Korea and Thailand. The phrase, ‘‘the more the merrier,’’ aptly describes ample meals served family style for everyone to sample. DINNER SHOWsDance, music and a thriving professional theater community provide quality entertainment for children and adults. It’s simply delightful combined with dinner!

MEXICANSouth of the border zest meets island best at Kaua‘i’s Mexican eateries. Savor slow-cooked meats, sauces simmered with homegrown spices, and guacamole made with locally grown avocados.

ITALIANPizza pies made with handcrafted crusts and distinctive toppings will expand everyone’s imagination. Delicious pasta dishes often feature freshly caught seafood combined with island herbs and spices.

LocalLocal-style food is synonymous with ample servings at value prices —great for families. Dishes blend popular Portuguese, Korean, American and Filipino favorites.

FROZEN TREATSWarm climate, cool sweets...a perfect combination for all ages. Freshen your day with gelato and sorbetto made with island-grown ingredients. Or try a local shave ice with banana and lilikoi syrup.

In a paradise such as the Hawaiian Islands, where beauty and the island’s bounty are abundant, an innovative vision was conceived by

a group of culinary masters. Born 22 years ago in 1991, a core group of 12 founding chefs experimented with food concepts and developed what is now recognized worldwide as Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine. This culinary genre was developed and refined through the alchemy of Hawai‘i’s top creative chefs, who combined Eastern and

Western culinary traditions to create unique, Pacific-inspired dishes. With a focus on presentation, preparation and the achievement of artistic perfection, the results have been resoundingly successful. The 12 original pioneers of Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine are Chefs Sam Choy, Roger Dikon, Mark Ellman, Beverly Gannon, Jean-Marie Josselin, George Mavrothalassitis, Peter Merriman, Amy Ferguson Ota, Philippe Padovani, Gary Strehl, Alan Wong, and Roy Yamaguchi. While visiting Kaua‘i, take the opportunity to experience the cuisine that put Hawai‘i on the culinary map. This distinct cooking style incorporates locally grown ingredients and flavors ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to many different types of meat and seafood varieties.

Kaua‘i’s island neighbor, Ni‘ihau (known as the “Forbidden Isle”), is the source of the delicate white, yellow, blue and rare gold shells that are collected, sorted, finely drilled and painstakingly strung into necklaces and chokers by Ni‘ihau residents. These garlands are usually of museum quality and can be found in isle jewelry stores; ask the retailer for a certificate of authenticity.

Visitors to the Garden Isle are often enchanted with the spectacular scenery, friendly residents and laid back island lifestyle. Why not take home some of the magic by selecting items manufactured by artisans, farmers, ranchers, musicians, publishers, and other locally owned businesses that create their products from materials on Kaua‘i. Many of these businesses are members of a special Kaua‘i County program called Kaua‘i Made. The program screens members to ensure that their unique items are made on the island by local residents, using Kaua‘i materials where possible. Visit kauaimade.net for a detailed listing of businesses and retailers who carry Kaua‘i

Made products. Another exclusive island program is Kaua‘i Grown, a Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau program. It puts the spotlight on the local farmers and ranchers who grow island produce and livestock, along with the restaurants and retailers who incorporate these foods into their dishes or sell on their store shelves. An easy way to taste fresh fruits and vegetables from farmers in the Kaua‘i Grown program is to visit a local farmers market. Turn to page 34 in the magazine for days and locations. Also

visit the Kaua‘i Grown website at kauaigrown.org where you’ll find the Kauai Farmers Market Guide, as well as general information on the Kauai Grown program, recipes and events.

Many of Kaua‘i’s golf courses use the salt tolerant tropical turf grass called seashore paspalum. It’s eco-friendly and easier to maintain because it doesn’t require as much water, herbicide, or pesticide as other turf grasses. “It makes a great putting and

playing surface on fairways and tee boxes,” says Matt Torry, golf pro at Kiahuna Golf Club.

Fueled by nearly 440 inches of rain each year, Wailua River is a powerful presence for native Hawaiians, marked by the construc-tion of seven heiau (shrines) along the river. From the summit of Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, the river travels nearly 10 miles down its southeast face, emptying out its liquid cargo over the edge of an 80-foot precipice to form Wailua Falls. The winding flow of water makes its way along 11 miles of thick, verdant foliage. Its lushness is attributed to the river’s tendency to overflow its banks depositing nutrient-rich sedi-ments along the river’s edge. While the shallow waters restrict travel by larger boats, kayaks are an excellent way to explore off-river areas. However you cross it, Wailua River is a cultural link to Hawai‘i’s past.

Surfing Surfing as both sport and transportation is important in Hawai‘i’s history, dating back to the 15th century. Over the years, surfing has branched out into many variations. For example, in body or boogie boarding, you’ll ride waves on four-foot boards in a reclining or kneeling position. With stand up paddle (SUP) boarding, no waves are needed as you glide on top of the water. You’ll get a full body workout and it’s great fun for the whole family.

hawai‘i’s snowconeShave ice is Hawai‘i’s version of the snowcone—only much better! Ice is shaved, not crushed, for a fluffy consistency to better absorb the syrup and melt in your mouth. Strawberry,

lemon lime and vanilla are standard. Since you’re in the islands, you’ve gotta try mango, li hing mui and coconut. Add

azuki beans or a scoop of ice cream for an ‘ono treat!
