Discover this International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site on a day-long outing. First stop at the Kilauea Visitors Center and talk with park rangers about the latest volcano activity updates. See a 20-min. film, interactive exhibits and get an idea of what to see if your time here is limited. HVNP is always open; visitor center is open 7:45 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Entry is $10 per vehicle, 808-985-6000. Also check online for daily ranger-led programs, nps.gov/havo. A public viewing area in Kalapana is about a 1.5-hour drive from the park at the end of Hwy. 130 (Keaau-Pahoa bypass road), and requires a 1.5-mile roundtrip hike. Its currently open 3-9 p.m.; call for recorded updates, 808-961-8093.
