The Background Over the years I have taken an in-depth look at the drivers that make franchising so very powerful. Traditionally the industry points to the previously mentioned “5 Reasons” which are all absolutely correct, but lack context.

Today’s self driven and highly successful franchisees are yesterdays highly incentivised and barely motivated employees.

This means that the very same salaried executive your company devotes time, money and effort into training, motivating and rewarding will, without blinking, pay a franchise multiples of their annual salary in order to essentially work harder, be more dedicated and in many cases earn less.

Based on this thought, one could suggest that current programs and methods of motivating and incentivising corporate staff are possibly falling short of the mark. It suggests that there is an ingredient missing which HR and “Incentive specialists” simply do not have access to. It suggest that what you might consider an incentive, your employee possibly considers a “God given right”. So what is the difference? After all, we are dealing with the exact same person? Yet despite all the effort you invest into training, development and incentives, they almost always work harder and smarter when part of a franchise.

Lets First Fill In The Blank…As a franchisee/employee (Choose One) you have to work within set parameters, you have a hierarchical reporting structure, you have to offer products and services to customers as prescribed by management. You have to wear a specific uniform, you have to answer the phone in a certain way, you have to use the software you are given. You have very little room to innovate, you have to submit weekly reports and feedback, you have to use specific systems, your performance is constantly under scrutiny and if you fall short, you get summoned to the head office. You work long hours and often go without a break, you often skip holidays and seldom spend quality time with the family. If you bring the company into disrepute you can be removed…

But yet the difference is that a franchisee/employee (Choose One) will happily pay large sums of money for the opportunity.
