    The New Orleans Film Institute is a project that was designed as a facility for the local university students to learn about film and make connections with local profes-sionals and the surrounding commu-nity. The 30,000 square foot building includes a public theater, a sound-stage, classrooms and a cafe space that serve both the local community and students enrolled in the school. The large circulation porch creates a connection to the city and provides a place for the interaction between

    programs by providing small pock-ets of public space. The building's vertical circulation doubles as sitting steps and meeting spaces. The building design also responds to the hot, humid, New Orleans climate by using the main circulation 'porch' space to create ventilation shading using an exterior wall of greenery.

  • My first response to the site was to take advantage of the high volume of traffic on the northeast corner. I placed the main entrance to the building on this corner and placed the public functions of the building such as the cafe and theater on the east side of the site. My second response to the site was to make a connection to the neutral ground space adjacent to the space that acts as a green park space for the neighborhood. The park space extends the site, setting the building back from the sidewalk on the eastside to allow for a public plaza connected to a public cafe to draw in the local residents of the area.

    This section shows how the program spaces in the building connect to the front porch circulation space highlight-ed in blue. The blue lines running hori-zontally across the section show where the floor plates would be of the porch space and the two vertical spaces that are highlighted in blue show the node at which the circulation for the school programs meet the porch space.

    As part of comprehensive studio we had to design the buildings structure, HVAC and several important details to the building. I focused my atten-tion on the wall structure for the front porch space. The wall structure is a system of layers including loadbearing steel, an operable glass curtain wall, and an exterior screen that would support the growth of a series of vines.

    The global studio project is a project that I participated in while in Beijing, China. A group of ten University of Kansas Students in three different global locations de-signed and produced drawings and renderings for the 1800 square meter project. The project was focused on the process and methods for communicating architecture across continents. The project includes public program spaces of a gallery, cafe, and markets along with more

    private program spaces such as student and professor dorms and a studio space. I was chosen to work with one other student to develop the concept for the main public space including the relationships of the gallery, studio and cafe spaces. I was also responsible for producing the final diagrams for the presenta-tion.

    One of the most important factors in the design of the building was the sites very prominent position on the main north/south access of Beijing. The axis runs through the city from the forbidden city all the way up to the Olympic grounds, with the exception of a couple of blocks where the site for the project is located. We talked a lot about the idea of opening the axis back up and reconnecting this important lifeline of the city. The project that we proposed would serve as a research hub for international students and profes-sors to come and study in a richly historic area of Beijing.

    programWe decided on the idea of a roof that would encompass and unify all the different program spaces while also referencing the traditional Chinese post and beam roof structure. We placed the cafe and gallery on the southwest corner to draw people in from the plaza space and the dorms and professor housing in the center of the site. The studio can only be accessed from the north side how-ever, the studio space is lofted over the gallery given the studio pin up space a visual connection to the art being displayed below.

    The Chicago Opera House project was a group project in which a small group of us collaborated on the concept and initial planning. I was responsible for the design, planning, and rendering of the 2,400 seat auditorium. The design of our building responds to the urban context of Chicago to the east of the site, while maintaining its orientation to the river. Our idea was to add a tall element to the build-ing that would respond to the urban edge of the site. We also rotated the axis of the auditorium perpendicular to the river to create views of the riverfrom the main lobby space.

    The site at West Harrison and South Wells streets was a large factor in the design of the opera house. We faced the challenges of incorporating the riverfront, fitting in to the context of the downtown buildings to the east, and creating a back of the house loading dock that could be easily accessed from the street. To incorporate the riv-erfront we created a marina and also a water feature that comes south to the front of the building. We created a procession of steps that allow and encourage people to wander down to the water. We created a large plaza to the south east corner of the site to bring people into the building from the city. We positioned the front of the opera house to face the southeast al-lowing us to create a service entrance off of the less busy Wells Street.

  • The auditorium space is the heart of the op-era house program which all the other program spaces of the buildng are centered around. To reflect this our team decided to make the au-ditorium the focal point the design by cladding it in a glowing blue metal mesh and creating a grand lobby that surrounds the auditorium on all sides. All levels of seating in the audiorium have their own separate balcony levels that open into a triple height space of the main lobby making the balcony space a place to see and be seen.

    The Lawrence Arts Center is a project that was an exten-sion to the existing arts center on 9th and New Hampshire Street in Lawrence. The extension would include one large gallery space, smaller galleries, a second theater, artist studios, and additional class-rooms. Because the North West corner of the site faces Lawrences main downtown street, Massachu-setts street, I created an entry plaza on the NW corner that leads straight into the main gallery space. When

    talking to the employees of the current art center they mentioned their desire for people to explore the building more often and view the artwork. To encourage this circula-tion I created smaller galleries in the corners of the building to promote wandering.

    Sunshine 100 is a project that I worked on during my time at Aedas in Beijing. It is a development in the city of Shenyeng, China. The development includes commercial shops on the street level, a mall, a hotel, offices, and apartments. The design concept for the development was to have an organic pedestrian street running throughout the complex.

    I designed the layout of the typical floor plan for both the hotel and the serviced apartment towers. I was responsible for making sure the core had enough elevators, fire stairs, and space for HVAC. I also was responsilbe for following guidelines set out in Chinese codes that set regulations for apartment layouts to increase sunlight in the living spaces.
