Commodore Perry  was  an officer in the US navy during the War of  1812. He is known as the “Hero of Lake Erie” because of his courageous leadership during the Battle of

Both maps show the positions of the naval fleets of both the British (red) and US (blue).

Perry’s  flagship the Lawrence  was disabled during the battle and he had to transfer his crew to the Niagara  The transfer his crew to the Niagara. The Niagara sailed into action and defeated the  British fleet.Six vessels in Perry’s  fleet, including theNiagara were built in Erie.  A reconstructed US Brig Niagara can be seen at Erie’s Maritime Museum.

The Treaty of Ghent was signed in December of 1814 which ended the War of 1812.
