Lesson Plan Year 1 Theme 4: Threats and responses Sub-topic: The Cession of Labuan, December 1846. Unit: 3 Length of Lesson: 1 hr and 30 mins. Objectives: at the end of the lesson:- 1. Students should be able to identify the reasons why the British were interested in Labuan. 2. Students should be able to find out the kind of pressure that the British put on the Brunei’s which gave him no choice but to surrender Labuan to the British. 3. Students should be able to identify the impact of the loss of Labuan on Brunei. 4. Students should be able to be involved in the class activity. Stages Students/teacher activity Resources Set induction (5 mins) -Teacher starts with recalling previous lesson.i.e. the British attacked Brunei. Lesson Developme nt (1hr 20 mins) -Show the map of the empire of Brunei in the early 19 th century and the map of Brunei focusing on the island of Labuan. -Explain the reason why British interested in Labuan Strategic site Protect trade route to China Coaling station -Explain the tactic used by Captain Rodney Mundy to pressure Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien II to cede Labuan. -Explain how James Brooke was appointed as the first Governer of Labuan. -Group discussion.(1 hr) -power point presentation(o ptional) -Brunei Map -Pictures - A4 papers

-Teacher starts with recalling previous lesson.i.e. the British attacked Brunei.

Lesson Development(1hr 20 mins)

-Show the map of the empire of Brunei in the early 19th century and the map of Brunei focusing on the island of Labuan.-Explain the reason why British interested in Labuan

Teacher will divide students into groups 4-5. Instructions and materials (illustration) will be

given to each group. Each group will give a story line from the

illustration with the supervision from the teacher. Students are allowed to use their own ideas/imaginations (10 mins).

Each group will present their work before the end of the lesson. (5 mins each)

-At the end of the lesson, groups will submit all their work to the teacher.

-power point presentation(optional)-Brunei Map-Pictures- A4 papers

Closure(5 mins)

Teacher will summarize and highlight the important points of what have been learnt today by doing some de-briefing and by asking students questions
