The history of video games goes as far back as the Early 1940s-1950s, when academics began designing simple games, simulations, and artificial intelligence programs as part of their computer science research. Video gaming would not reach mainstream popularity until the 1970s and 1980s, when arcade video games , gaming consoles and home computer games were introduced to the general public. Since then, video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment and a part of modern culture in most parts of the world. As of 2014, there are eight generations of video game consoles. First generation (1972–1980) Magnavox Odyssey , released in 1972, was the first video game console. Color TV Game , released only in Japan in 1977. The history of video games goes as far back as the Early 1940s-1950s, when academics began designing simple games, simulations, and artificial intelligence programs as part of their computer science research.
