Online campaign to make Sir Lowry’s Pass saferANNETTE THERON
“I hope this time I can make achange,” says Margie Kemp, whocurrently lives in the UK and start-ed a petition to make Sir Lowry’sPass safer for road users.
The petition comes after the deathofWynandCillié (22) following a trag-ic accident on the N2 at the foot of theSir Lowry’s Pass on Saturday 29 No-vember – a stretch of roadwithwhichall Overberg residents who travel toSomerset West or Cape Town are fa-miliar.At 08:45, a truck crashed into six ve-
hicles stationed at the traffic light in-tersection after its brakes had appar-entlyfailed. Itwasthesecondaccidentof itskind tooccurat this intersectionin as many years.Kempsayssheandherhusbandhad
lived in Somerset West and, becauseshe worked in Hermanus at the time,she used the road daily. One day awork colleague received a call. Hisparents had been in a car accident onSirLowry’sPass.Hismomhadpassed
awayandthathisdadwasinintensivecare. “I don’t think I have ever beenthat shocked and rattled as I knew Iwas going to have to make the samejourney home at the end of that day.”Kemp started writing to local au-
thorities and tried to get themedia in-volved,buthadnoresponse.Thecam-paign lost momentum until last weekwhen her sister and brother-in-law,who live and work in Somerset West,posted the picture of Wynand Cilliéwith an accompanying poemonFace-book. “I was furious because I did notcontinue with my campaign so manyyearsagoandfuriousthatnothinghas‘till this day been done about thisstretch of road; furious because myfriends and family that still live inSomerset West, Strand and Herma-nus,use this roadonadailybasis, andabsolutely terrified that I could be theone receiving one of those horrificphone calls in future. So, I startedthinking of what I could do.”Kemp started a Facebook page
called Petition To Make Sir Lowry’sPass Safer and had an incredible re-sponse. At the time of going to print
yesterday (Monday) the petition had996 signatures.Her plan is to compile a document
stating the current state of affairs andproposals as to what can be done tomake the road safer. She also wantsto get as many people together for atown meeting where authorities canhave the opportunity to explain theiractions to thepublic.Amemberof theFacebookgrouphasvolunteeredtosetup this meeting. “We are also plan-ning an awarenessmarch as a tributetoWynandandalltheothersthathavelost their lives.”SaschaPolkey ofGrabouwsays she
added her name to the petition be-cause she is very worried about thesafety of drivers on Sir Lowry’s Pass.“A road so many of my family andfriends use daily. I have personallydriven past a number of horrific fatalaccidents, including the one inwhicha family of threewere instantly killedlast year. I was very disturbed by it.“Icannotbelieve thatwith thenum-
ber of bad accidents and the large vol-ume of traffic on the pass, that moreis not being done to slow people

Town’sMaycoMemberforTransport,said the Western Cape governmenthas indicated that it planned to in-struct consulting engineers at ameet-ingthisweektoproceedwithaninves-tigation into an arrestor bed.Improvements were also recently
implemented to the timing of the traf-fic lights to reduce the likelihood ofaccidents at this intersection.“Amechanismhas also been added
to the traffic signal to detect any vehi-cle that is descending the pass and ap-proaching the intersectionat toohigh
a speed to stop at the red signal.Whensuch a vehicle is detected, the signalwill remain red for all approaches forasufficientperiod toallowthevehicleto pass through the intersection be-fore other traffic is given a green sig-nal to enter,” says Herron.“While this mechanism is useful if
a runaway truck isdetectedat theendof the green phase on the N2, it pro-vides no protection if the truck ap-proaches the intersection during oneof the other signal phases – as hap-pened on Saturday.”On Wednesday morning, Cape

Die Caledon-polisie was dieafgelope tweeweke hard aandie werk ter bewusmakingvan die 16 dae-veldtog virgeen geweld teen vroue enkinders.
