After a long night in his favourite local, the less than sober Mr Brouc̆ek embarks on two fantastical journeys: first to the moon, where he disgusts the inhabitants with his beer-swilling and sausage -eating antics and then to the middle of a revolution in 15th-centuryPrague, where he finds himself in a good deal of trouble... By turnsfunny, surreal, tender and thrilling, his journey is full of larger than life characters and wonderful portraits and parodies.

Janác̆ek’s music is as varied as Brouc̆ek’s adventures - fromthe extra-terrestrial sounds of the moon to gorgeous orchestral interludes, bagpipes, an organ, and stirringly patriotic Hussite hymns sung by a 40 strong chorus.

The superb cast includes John Graham-Hall, Scottish contralto Frances McCafferty and celebrated Scottish baritone Donald Maxwell.

Sung in English. Production supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle. A co-production with Opera North.

THE HISTORYBOYS by Alan Bennett

One of the great plays of the decade, The History Boys is setin a school in the North of England where a boisterous bunch ofbright, funny sixth-form boys are attempting to gain entrance to

Oxford and Cambridge whilst fending off the distractions of sport and sex. In Alan Bennett’s much-loved play, staffroom battles and

the anarchy of adolescence provide a rich vein of comedy.

The History Boys opened in May 2004 at the National Theatreto rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on to become one of

their biggest ever hits, winning no less than 30 major awardsincluding both Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In 2005, a

film was made with the entire original cast, many of whom havesubsequently become household names. This will be the first major

revival of the play since the original National Theatre production.

Alan Bennett is one of the most distinctive voices in Britishtheatre. Wry and tender, his impeccably-observed plays includeTalking Heads, Single Spies, Forty Years On, Habeas Corpus,

The Madness of George III and The Lady in the Van.

and a staunch friend to his faithful gag writer, Harvey. But when Daveunexpectedly pops his clogs, these close companions are left bereftand some of them may even be out of a job. Unless, of course, therepeats, television specials, biographies and newspaper tell-alls can fill the vacuum. But who is best placed to exploit the legacy?

Crammed with great jokes, Tom Conti leads a fantastic cast ofperformers, in this hilarious and fast-paced comedy from the author

of such classic TV series as Rising Damp, Duty Free, Only When ILaugh and Home to Roost. Eric Chappell’s script reflects a lifetime ofworking with comedians and he understands the ego of comic genius

Peter Hall’s production of Bedroom Farce, one of Ayckbourn’s bestloved works, opened to critical acclaim at the Rose Theatre in

Kingston last year and now comes to the Theatre Royal following a successful run in London’s West End.

Four couples, three bedrooms, two celebrations, one blazingrow and an illicit kiss (or two). Alan Ayckbourn’s ingenious

comedy shines a brilliant spotlight onto the trials and tribulations of suburban marriage.

Trevor and Susannah have a problem relationship whichrequires urgent attention. What better solution than to talk

it over with family and friends? Preferably in their respectivebedrooms and ideally in the middle of the night. Inevitably,

one problem relationship tends to spark off another. When you have friends like Trevor and Susannah,

nobody gets much sleep.

After a sell-out success in London, Alan Bennett’slatest hit play comes to Glasgow.

The Habit of Art looks at the unsettling desires of twodifficult men, in an imagined meeting between W H

Auden and Benjamin Britten. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when

all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.
