There have been 3 eras of Globalization

1. The first era involved countries globalizing from around 1400 to 1800.

2. In the second era countries were globalizing from 1800 to 2000.

3. The third era is when the world ‘flattened’ as people from all nationalities began globalizing themselves after 2000.

GLOBALIZATION

The beginning

• According to Friedman; during the first era, world shrunk from “Size Large” to “Size Medium”.

• Globalization began the moment that Columbus discovered that the world was round.

• From Columbus’ discovery to the mid 1950’s, Globalization’s impact on society was mainly acceleration and advancement of trade.

• Jobs were created, industries were

born, and economies were filled

with construction.

Outsourcing

• Definition: Acquiring services or products

from an outside supplier or manufacturer

in order to cut costs.

Towards the end of the chapter...

• Friedman travels through Japan, China and back to America, and talks about different types of business outsourcing...

• Friedman explores

homesourcing and military

outsourcing and explains the

commonness of outsourcing in

our society.
