LETTERS to the Editor Hunters Hill Guest Column THE WEEIII.YDB

Call to protest pub hours plan

Dear Sir,

The Hunter's Hill Hotel (HHH) has recently applied for an extension to its li· censing hours until 4 am Mon-Sat and until midnight on Sundays (the HHH cur-. . rentty trades untd m1dn1ght Mon-Sat and 10 p.m. on SUndays).

This is an outrageous application and I urge residents to lodge an objection with the Hunters Hill Council (PO Box 21 Hunter's Hill 2110, Quote DA No: AN 2013·1120) by the deadline of December 27.

The '3 H's' has been a good corporate citizen to date and is well-regarded locally for its good food, great staff and pleasant atmosphere.

The licensees now risk losing community goodwill by inviting 'drinkathons' with associated risks of street fights, broken glass, lock-outs. traffic noise and general late night ro·wdiness in what is overw helmingly a residential area.

I suspect it will come as a big surprise to the many people who have bought off the plans in the large residential developments next to the HHH and on Mapledoram's Comer to learn that the pub they thought would close at midnight now seeks a licence to trade until King's Cross hours.

industrial revolution.

Land and sea temperatures have risen nearly one degree centigrade in that period with the most dramatic changes in last 30 years.

Research at our own cli· mate change centre (University of NSW) infer that El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events were more active and intense from 1979 to 2009 than at any time in last 600years

We are all aware the ENSO is associated with hot drier conditions, droughts, high fire danger and in the tropical :zones causing increased rainfall and llooding.

Kind deed Dear Sir,

I would like to thank the lady who found my handbag in Wootworths' carpark and handed it in to Wool· worths' service desk where I collected it, fully intact.

As the lady did not leave her name, I would like her to know how extremely grateful I am for her honesty and thank her once again.

NSW boast boards ol almost 30 men and not one woman - a good old boys' club com-plete with a "grass ceiling" if ever there was one.

LUKE BURTON Ryde

Dear Sir,

Racing is the sport of kings (and not queens) be· cause the O'Farrell Govern-ment and its Racing Minister, George Souris, have only ever appointed men to the controlling bodies of the sport.

In a classic case of jobs for the boys (rather than the girts) Racing NSW, which is ap-

pointed directly by Minister Souris, has ju& one woman on its seven member board of directors, while the Austra-lian Turf Club, Harness Racing NSW and NSW Hamess Rae-ing Club can find room for al-most two dozen men between them, but not one woman.

Celebrity ambassadors like Stephanie Rice and girls of . racmg sw1msu1t calendars will not shatter the grass ceiling of the racing boys club in NSWand Mr Souris is duty bound to take action on the gross gender imbalance in the ad ministration of the sport.

Walking tall thanks to low profile sport physi

AS A model, I'm asked a lot about the poise, posture and confidence required to do my job successfully.

My secret is physical cui· lure and I've been doing it since I was three years old.

Physical culture has been around forever but is still a relatively low profile dance sport, compared to jazz and ballet.

Physi choreography incorporates various exercises focusing on posture, flexibility and core strength.

The routines are quite controlled, using various ballet and pilates style movements.

There's also a dance component which the kids love.

Physical culture is unique because i t offers a little bit of everything, rolled into one class.

Physi girls stand out in the crowd - we are known for our great posture.

Being taught how to stand tall is the first thing we learn and it stays with you for life.

But what I love most about physical culture is performing at the various competitions during the physi season.

To The POINT With

KRISTY COULCHER

THESE ARE all things that physi girls experience.

We encourage one anoth· er, we celebrate each other's success and we show love and support when needed.

Physi has taught me about the importance of teamwork and commitment and I've also met many wonderful people through the sport and formed some lifelong friendships.

Competi tion isn't for everyone, however. For some, just being involved, getting fit, having fun and meeting new friends is what i t's all about.

But one thing is for sure - I have physical culture to thank for keeping me in shape and giving me the confidence to perform both on and off the catwalk .

• • •

Our club experienced another outstanding year in all aspects of physt competition with the girts bringing home five team trophies and four individual state titles.

I must congratulate my hard-working teacher Kate O'Sullivan who bowed out of competition physi in fine style • winning a second successive state individual t itle in the advanced ladies section.

There was d ouble reason for the O'Sullivan family to celebrate after Kate's daughter Sara won the 8 Years section for a second successive year.

Congratulations also must go to the club's other two state individual title winners - Melanie Pride in intermediate seniors and Rosie Walburn (9 Years).

Hunters Hill Physi have classes available for girts aged from 4 Years and above.

For more information check the website: www. physi.net

This development application should be strongly opposed or, better still, the licensees should be encouraged by Council to come to their senses and withdraw their uncivilised proposal. Women not

It's an exciting feeling -the butterflies, the nerves, the preparation, the glamour, the satisfaction of achieving your goals or sometimes dealing with disappointment.

I AM proud to be a member of the successful Hunters Hill Physi Club and recently competed in the elite section at the 2013 NSW State Grand Finals held at Sydney Town Hall where I was fortunate to finish third.

A heritage action group based in Hunters Hill has urged councillors not to give away a property as 'a Christmas gift' to property developers.

The Gladesville Action Group fears Council will include the old home at 10 Cowell Street in a rezoned area for the proposed multi-million redevelopment of the Gladesville Shopping Centre.

Although development approval is the hands of NSW Government, the group believes Hunters Hill Council can exempt the home from development on heri1age grounds.

'We've heard that councillors have consented to

!1 GEI!AT,QJCAKESJ

sell this land to a developer and that the home will be demolished," group spokesperson Russell Young told councillors on Monday.

The action group believes councillors' willingness to stand up to developers will underscore their willingness to stand up for Hunters Hill's future self determination.

The Council did not debate the issue on Monday, which was its last meeting for 2013.

The action group can be contacted on gvaction~rnail.com and its statements can be read at www.GiadesvileCommunity. com

Council votes for town hall's new 12-metre Telstra tower Harmful emissions from a Telstra tower at

Hunters Hill Town Hall would not impact on neighbours and a local school, councillors were told on Monday night.

The Council voted to approve the 12-metre tower to be sited at the rear of the town hall after Group Manager for Development and Regulatory Control Steve Kourepis assured councillors it met State and Federal safety controls for high level radio frequency emissions.

"If you're right next to it, yes, there is an impact, but if you're directly under it no," he said.

"It (the emission) goes up, up, up.•

In response to a question from Deputy Mayor Dr Meredith Sheil about the safety of staff working in close proximity to the tower, Mr Kourepis gave an assurance that specific occupational health and safety controls would be adhered to.

"For example, if our staff need to get up and work on it, it will be turned off," he said.

Mr Kourepis also assured councillors that the neighbouring Hunters Hill Public School and the Congregational Church Retirement Village had been consulted about the proposed tower and had not raised objections.

He nonetheless confirmed that the school had insisted

on a 'safety review' within six months of the tower's operations and councillors agreed to this pre-condition.

Councillors had earlier been advised by Telstra the expected emissions from the tower fell below a Federal safety standard for electromagnetic exposure levels.

" In terms of actual power output the maximum permitted output under the standard is 4.25 W/m2 (watts per metre squared) whereas the maximum power output of this site will be 0.043 W/m2," Telstra said.

"The predicted electromagnetic emissions will fall well within the standard."

Claims made about the harm caused by electromagnetic emissions range from brain tumours to infertility, although Telstra had stressed there was 'no substantiated scientific evidence of adverse health effects' from communi~ based emissions 'bases , like the Hunters Hill tower.

The new tower will replace four existing but outdated towers, and will have its equipment encased in a protective framework that Mr Kourepis said would resemble a chimney.

To be erected on the heritage listed Town Hall site, the

installation of the 12 metre tower is also wijhin a zone where the Hunters Hill Local Environment Plan limits the height of buildings to 8.5 metres.

A legal technicality nonetheless allows the Council to get around its own regulations.

"The proposed installation can be considered a 'struc-

lure' but does not possess any characteristics that would classify it as a building," Councillors were advised in writing by staff.

"Although the heritage listing applies to the entire Council owned property extending back to Madeline Street, the only significant components are confined to the sandstone fa«ade of the

original town hall." Councillors were told " the

visual impacts will be minimal" and the tower would not be seen from Alexandra Street.

Telstra expects the new tower to improve the quality of ijs mobile phOne service to customers living in and around Hunters Hill.

Focusing on men's health

Bennelong MP John Alexander spent the month of November focusing on men's health ISSUeS.

Taking part in Movember, Mr Alexander grew an impressive moustache to do his part to bring much needed attention to remind men of all ages to have regular medical check ups, even when they're feeling well.

Now cleanly shaven (much to the delight of his partner!), Mr Alexander says "just because the moustaches have gone, doesn't mean we should drop the ball when it comes to encouraging men to get regular health checks.''

The Federal MP has been fortunate not to have any serious health issues over the years, but now ensures he regularly visits the GP to keep on top of his health.

Mr Alexander recalls a time when he didn't visit a GP for well over a decade - he considers himself fortunate not to have had any serious health issues develop during this time.

He encourages men of all ages to have regular health checks.

GOD'S GIFT IN A BROKEN WORLD As each year closes and we celebrate the mystery of Jesus' arrival among us at Christmas, we are aware of the world's suffering, lives lost or damaged, communities in conflict, people whose world has been turned upside down by natural disaster. What hope does Jesus offer in the midst of this mayhem. pain and sinfulness? We all long for hope, for meaning, for a sense of purpose. Mysteriously in the middle of our suffering times, meaning often bubbles to the surface. It is mostly through the kindness of others, the gentleness, the helping hand, the listening ear, the efforts of those who strive to make our world a more just and fair place especially for those who suffer. In Jesus we see this love at work in a way that shows the best of our human

nature. However, in him we can see something more. In Jesus we find the foundation of all love, all justice and all hope. for in Jesus' face we come to know the face of God himself. It is his Spirit, alive within us, that therefore enables us to bring hope to others. Our meaning, our hope, our salvation is not something we can accomplish on our own. Our history past and present tells us that. We need God. We are made for God and we can only come to know God deeply and truly through the Son he sent to save us, the Son whose birth we celebrate this Christmas time. Let's give ourselves a fresh chance to enter the mystery of God's presence among us, and to invite his presence to abide with us as we celebrate Jesus· birth this Christmas time. Kevin and Peter

Hearty welcome for safety gear Putney Tennyson Bowl

ing & Community Club have installed an auto mated external defibrillator thanks to a co-operative purchase by the club and the Probus Club of Gladesville and District.

Defibrillators are small enough and smart enough to use for first aid on any victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Seed funding came from the Australian Government Department of Social Services to the Probus Club and the balance was provided by the bowling club.

Putney Bowling Club members and two Probus groups, who meet regularly on the premises, are nearly all in higher risk cate11ories for SCA and this un.t has been primed waiting for an emergency.

Several club members have undertaken training and are at the ready, although they hope they never use the equipment.

In an SCA the victim has no regular pulse but the heart is twitching chaotically and an electrical shock to the heart can restore regularity.

In other types of heart attack a pulse is still present and a defibrillator would

not be used. If an AED is used within

the first three to five minutes after collapse and CPR is correctly administered then the chance of the victim's recovery is high.

JOE HOLMANS BHL AIR CON EXPERT

T:e season for air conditioning has tarted strongly for us at Holmans as

every year a hot spell seems to come earlier and eMier each year. We began our season with a hot spell early in September. Since then the weather has become a bit milder and with a bit of rain everything is green and lush. The enquiries for air conditioners reduced as the temperature became milder as customers without air conditioning think they can live without it for another season. We base our ordering of stock on long term forecasts which show the heat will be back in early December and Mid January and hopefully for us airconditioning sales will increase. With that ccol spell that came I actually sold some heaters and it made me realise I should be trying to sell the heating function of air conditioners during Summer as well as the cooling and air purifying capabilty. When we had that cool change last

month a customer came in to the store and wanted to replace a 2400 watt oil heater just to keep warm till summer started. She also wanted to enquire about air conditioning for summer, one of the main concerns for the customer was energy efficiency due to the rising costs of electricity now and in the future. I thought I would compare the cost to

run an oil heater in comparison to an air conditioner so we calculated how much it would oost to run a 2400watt oil heater for 500 hours compared to a reverse cycle airconditioner (thats a long cold winter 75 days I 6.5 hours per day) at 25.gc per kw. The area I usedJor. the. calculation

ON

SET

.&.lA co:.~

was an area of around 30 sq meters (the 2400 watt oil heater unit would be at full capacity). So the calculation is 500 hours x 25.g c per kw x 2. 4 power. it worked out to be over $300 in electricity for the period and over 10 years it would be $3000 in electricity costs. As you can imagine after looking at the running costs the customer suddenly became interested in replacing the heater with something which is more efficient. We started to investigate what a split system would use to heat the same area and worked out to heat the same area we would use a 3.5kw inverter split system. The new inverter units are much more efficient as the power usage is variable unlike old units which turn on and off at full capacity Oike the oil heater as well) they also keep a more constant and responsive temperature keeping you more comfortable. We went to the government energy rating site www.energyrating.gov.au and with the calculator on the site worked out to heat the same area with an inverter unit was only $105 in energy costs to do the same area and hours per year. (based on model Fujitsu astg 12kmca/3.5kw unit.) So instead of replacing the old 2400 watt heater we l)ave just installed a 3.5kw unit

THE WEEKLY TIMES, Wednesday December 11, 2013- 29

"An average bedroom sized serviced by a 2.5kw unit works out to be

)

for around $1700 (fully installed) which heats properly and only uses about $105 a year in electricity to heat for the same area which is one third of the cost and it will cool as well! With Summer on the way Christmas is also not far away and its that wonderful time of the year when against our better judgement some of us volunteer to have the family Christmas celebration at their house. Relatives from all parts of the compass and climates and mental health will descend on our usually peaceful home. Our family (who I love dearly) come from all areas just in Sydney from the mountains to the coast. they all have different ideas of what is hot weather to them and to keep everyone comfortable is not easy. Luckily we have no interstate visitors this year because thats a whole new level in keeping everyone happy and comfortable. (Just a quick note to my family no-one is sleeping over this year! two words designated driver.) So now its time for the hard sell, the only way to keep everyone semi happy and cool at Christmas is to keep them air conditioned. We have been selling and recommending the Fujitsu brand this year due to their advantage ot being more efficient due to a different t~e of

-

refrigerant used in the new range. We have installed well over a hundred units fujitsu units this year already and apart from being more efficient we have found them to be exceptionally quiet inside and outside. The installers are impressed with the manufacturing quality of the new models (fujitsu also have a 5 year complete warranty) and the remotes are easy to use. We also sell all the other major brands like Mitsubishi Panasonic and Ke!vinator if you prefer a different brand. We have some install dates left to get units in before Christmas and 1 am happy to come out and measure up and give a free quote in home at a time convenient to you. And remember if its 40 degrees on Christmas day at your place and you have no air conditioning, I can guarantee that if your favourite overweight uncle from Katoomba isnt happy , no one will be happy. And finally to our wonderful customers that have supported Holmans this year if we dont see you before Christmas our family would like to wish you and your family a wonderful and safe holiday period. Milestone for Ben Ben Tran of 1st Boronia Scout Troop was recently

presented with the Australian Scout Medallion by Regional Commissioner Scouts Charles Turner and District Scout Leader George Simpson.

This award follows the rep-requisite Adventurer Cord awarded to Ben at District Camp in June earlier this year.

The Australian Scout Medallion marks a huge milestone at 1st Boronia Scouts, as this is the first ASM to be awarded in living memory at Boronia.

It is the highest award a scout can eam in the Scout Section and is considered a pinnacle in scouting - a milestone in their scouting life, with less than 1 per cent of scouts in NSW being awarded the medallion.

So you can imagine how proud the Troop is ol Ben. In achieving the award, Ben has been worl<ing

diligently over the past two years that includes a«ending ScOut Jamboree in January 2013; his Adventurer Level hike (Green Cord) as well as mentoring the 1st Boronia Cub pack.

He has been instrumental in many of Boronia's Cubs linking up to Scouts.

In lact it was a huge night lor the Boronia Troop with four Cubs linked to Scouts; a new Leader invested (Neil

Carey) and two Scouts (Bri«nie Smith and Sandra Buchert) awarded their Explorer Cord (Blue Cord).

Scout Leader Sandra Webb thanked Steven Buchert for his support and also for making a perpetual trophy for the Scouts.

Prolific Sparke ignites Tigers

ENGLAND can't take a trick in the current Ashes series against Australia down under - but 20 year old Nottinghamshire recruit Brett Hutton has shown his value since arriving on the Sydney first grade cricket scene.

The Sydney all rounder bagged three wickets last Saturday as the Tigers rolled Blacktown for 251 on the opening day of their two-day fixture at Drummoyne Oval.

Hutton (3-56 off 17 overs), fellow quick Jake Turner (2 -69 off 22) and sea mer Matt White (2-44 off 16) shared the spoils as the Tigers restricted the visitors on an ideal batting wicket.

It has proved a fruitful summer to date for Hutton, who has made valuable contributions w ith bat and ball during the Tigers' win· ning streak.

Sydney (4-254) cruised to a six wicket victory over the Warriors last Sunday following half centuries from

skipper Tim Sparke (70 not out), Anthony Mosca (65) and Daniel Smith (57 not out off 48 balls).

In a fine team effort, the Tigers chalked up their fourth win of the season to move into fifth spot on 24 points on the competition table.

Sparke and Smith shared an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 107 with the former NSW keeper thumping four sixes and five boundaries in a power-laden innings.

Sent in to bat the previous

day, Blacktown started on a positive note with Damien Wall and Mitchell Hinds (34) sharing an opening stand of 64.

Blacktown lost their fourth wicket at 103 before Nathan Souter (73 off 148 balls) and Matthew Foster (70 off 169) peeled off half centuries to steady the ship.

The Warriors were 8-207 during the final session before tai lender Adam Esposito carved out an unbeaten 29 to bolster the visitors' stocks.

Healy shines with bat & gloves SYDNEY Tigers interna

tional Alyssa Healy was in tip-top form for NSW last weekend - turning in fine performances with the bat and behind the stumps to help the Breakers clean-sweep Queensland and maintain their unbeaten record.

The dashing Healy pro-

duced a Player of the Match performance in the Breakers' comprehensive nine wicket victory over Queensland Fire in their Women's Twenty20 clash at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Healy looked in sublime touch as she smashed 73 not out from 60 deliveries

with 10 fours. She combined with Alex

Blackwell (51 not out) in an unbroken 129 run second wicket partnership as NSW eclipsed the Fire's total of 4-129.

Healy's innings, along with two stumpings in the field, earned her the Player of the Match award.

All rounder Arun sho\Ns his value A MATCH-winning double by Kaapilis United all rounder Arun Nagendra

Meanwhile, Balmain openers Jared Hornby (67) and Cameron Price (56) were instrumental in the Tigers' victory over Balmain Old Boys at Gannan Park.

Golf Wall of Fame NOVEM BER 30, 2013

wi ll long be remembered by those in attendance at RydeParramatta Golf Club as a special night in the Club's history.

It was a night when Club patron and Australian golf· ing legend Kel Nagle was inducted onto the Wall of Fame.

Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club president Kevin

St Andrews All Age 19s premiership-winning trio Andrew Tsang (manager), Bernard Tsang (coach) and Jeffrey Chan.

Burton hosted the induction and special guests Peter and Mary Thomson, David and Barbara Mercer and Frank Phillips were on hand to share their thOughts on Kel and to assist in the induction highlighting over 80 professional victories worldwide. Championship honours

The highlight victory being the Centenary Open Championship making Mr Nagle the only Sydneysider to win the coveted major.

for powerful Woodies EASTWOOD St Andrews Football Club enjoyed a bumper 2013 season

in the Gladesville-Hornsby Football Association - marching their way to premiership and championship success.

Thomson • a five time British Open champion -shared a brief story of playing golf with Nagle one time and after arriving at the course early in the morning being met by the Club secretary.

In a fruitful campaign, the Woodies finished premiers in four grades - the 1014s; All Age 3; All Age 15 and All Age 19s to underline the Club's depth of talent.

Three of these sides • the 1 014s, All Age 3s and All Age 15s (co winners) - cel· ebrated double triumphs when they annexed their respective Championship titles to cap an outstanding achievement

St Andrews fielded 35 teams in the GladesvilleHornsby Football Association competition during 2013, including 20 junior sides from ages 6·17 and 15 senior outfits includ· ing their Super League sides of which first grade reached the top four following on from their 2012 championship honours.

Made up of former Premier League and NSW State League players, the Woodies All Age 3s -dubbed the • All Stars• -dominated the competition to finish undefeated premiers with 18 wins and two draws for the entire season.

The record books show they were by far the oldest team in the competit ion too, with an average age of 34 - but the goals came thick and fast

The All Stars averaged more than four goals per game and conceded less than a goal each t ime they took the field.

In fact, while the accolades always go to the strik· ers the back four only conceded 11 goals for the year.

Former NSW Super League star Richie Luksic showed the younger opposition there's no substitute for class by finding the net on 25 occasions while Stephen Butcher scored 9 times and Brad Glassock and Michael Pearson both scored 8 goals.

It was a family affair too with the squad including five sets of brothers.

The cherry on top of their season of dominance was that they exacted revenge for the year prior by beating old foes Putney 2·0 in the Grand FinaL

St Andrews' triumphant All Age 3 squad was: Michael Masulans (coach);

Stephen Butcher (manager); Leo Griffiths, Nils Johnsson, Daniel Marshall, Damien Luksic , Adam Hanlon, Greg Hanlon, Hutch Bykerk, Brad Glassock, Daniel Stevens, David Johnsson, Richard Luksic. Brett Pickup, Chris

Glassock, Michael Pearson, Paul Walton, Shawn Maple and Dax Bykerk.

The Woodies' All Age 19s f inished premiers with nine victories, four draws and a loss and only conceded eight goals and performed strongly against far more experienced opponents.

Half the team hadn't experienced competitive football before so the initial aim before the season commenced was to have fun and play to the best of their abilities.

It was a true underdog's story when they began defeating opponents with smart tactics and a do or die attitude.

The All Age 19s squad was: Bernard Tsang (coach); Andrew Tsang (manager); Chris Almeida; Sean Almeida; Goran Babic; Alexander Brennan; Jeffrey Chan; Steven D'Souza; Benjamin Davies; Jerry Giuliano; Joseph Law; Scott McGovern; Riche Mohan; Arun Nadesan; Colin Ross and Nick Rozen berg.

St Andrews have organised 2014 Super League trials on Sunday January 12; Tuesday January 14; Thursday January 16 and Sunday January 19. For more details contact Justin Wells 0458 550 585.

The secretary informed the pair the bar was closed and would open at ttam, however he could get them as many drinks as they liked until it · opened".

Mr Thomson told it well! The night celebrated all

Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club's Major Trophy winners for the past year and culminated in the final presentation to Ladies Club Champion Cheryl Fairclough and Men's Club Champion Colin McGowan.

PICTURED, five-time British Open Championship winner Peter Thomson, two time Australian Open winner Frank Phillips and David Mercer (PGA) on hand to induct golfing legend and Club patron Kel Nagle into Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club's Wall of Fame.
