Shah Peerally’s book, The Immigration Lawyer: Asylum is basically a work of fiction that narrates the story of Ahmad who flees Iraq from theclutches of Iraqi Government and seeks refuge in the US, but ends up finding himself stuck up in a similar situation. It is a story based during thereign of Saddam Hussein, where Ahmed is wrongly suspected by the Iraqi Government of being a CIA agent and is tortured relentlessly.

In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terroristattacks, hundreds of individuals were arrested withoutbeing charged. While most of those arrested were neverconvicted of terrorism, their greatest vulnerability hadbeen targeted—their status as immigrants, individualswith the vulnerable tag of being outsiders. The defunctImmigration and Naturalization Services were absorbedinto one unit named the Department of HomelandSecurity. Under the Patriot Act and the Real ID Act, theimmigrant community was forced to live in fear. Manywere deported or disappeared. In this time of darkness,emerged a group of civil rights lawyers, guerrilla lawyers.These lawyers believed in the United States Constitution
and were determined to fight for justice. Their faith and allegiance were often questioned, yet none ofthem gave up. Among this group was a less applauded group, which consisted of those faced withthe actual challenge, the implementation of the immigration law and new challenges namely beingconsidered guilty until proven innocent. These were the immigration lawyers. They fought for equalaccess to justice, which should never be decided by skin color, religion, or nationality. This is thestory of some of those lawyers and their fight that helped others gain the courage to raise theirvoices against injustice.

If there is a thread of truth that we can become whatever we set our minds to and that whatever wecan conceive and believe we can achieve, then there is a man in these modern times that can beshowcased as a deliberate creator in sculpting his life into being on a journey toward finding a man’strue worth.
Through experiences that ultimately builds a character in living life, a choice can be made to buildupon that character that ultimately benefits others or ignore and rebel against the character choiceand more or less become your own self defeating worst enemy and an empty shell of your true worth.
What is it that some tap into that intrigues others with a wonderment of how can one personaccomplish so much while others are content in living a degree of a lethargic existence? Those whofeign importance without substance is of a lesser worth toward themselves than the cost of theirshoes as they tread on others to gain it.
As a writer being given full measure to briefly write aboutmy first impressions of an individual, I can only proceed if itis a positive one. Is it intuition or gut feelings or allowing myconscious to be my proverbial guide that the words form?Yes that and more. Platitudes are gross misjudgments andI don’t ask a reader to favor my opinions based on myflattery of words, instead I highlight and encourage yourimpressions via your personal research. I will say that it isvery rare that an individual can impress upon me a respectthat is far above the necessary self marketing materialsthat professionals and business leaders build theirrecognition.
Shah Peerally is one such individual that confounds reasoning that one man can have such apassion for and a deliberate intent for helping others that are in need of his chosen niche in hispersonal and business profession of being an Immigration Attorney within his own law group inCalifornia. Indiscriminate violence on the immigrant community in the US may have fueled hisdirection in his professional life but it’s his desire in the form of thoughts that do indeed becomethings that continue to materialize results.
Saving the immigrant community from terrorist branding as a mission statement and helpingcreate the “Know Your Rights” guide for immigrants along with public speaking for the cause invarious churches, temples and mosques creates awareness.
