I’m honored to be in Denmark as U.S. Ambassador, and making my contribution to deepening the great existing partnership we have between our two countries. Our relationship is stronger than ever, and I am working daily to ensure that it continues. Our trading relationship is a central component, and one of the things that has impressed me most is how closely the U.S. Embassy and the AmCham work together to support our businesses operating in Denmark and to promote Danish investment in the U.S.

Over the past year, we have continued to deepen that partnership, bringing together leaders from politics and business, and showcasing the vital contributions that U.S. companies make to the Danish economy.

Along the way, I have greatly enjoyed co-hosting events with AmCham that showcase those contributions and promote a business friendly environment in Denmark. One highlight for me this year has been the Green Partnerships for Growth initiative − with the Confederation of Danish Industry we are working together to facilitate more public-private partnerships in sustainable energy. I was also pleased to join AmCham in presenting the Foreign Company of the Year award to U.S. firm Biogen Idec, which was deservedly recognized for creating

new Danish jobs and growth by investing in manufacturing.

I also greatly appreciate AmCham’s partnership as we showcase the benefits of Danish companies investing in the U.S. The kickoff “SelectUSA” Global Investment Summit in Washington, D.C., last October was only the beginning. We are looking forward to deepening our trade ties with Denmark and the EU exponentially in the coming year. The U.S. has already grown to be Denmark’s third-largest export market for goods and services. Our trading relationship is about $24 billion a year; we are confident that our trade relationship will grow even more in the coming years.

The launch of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations in 2013 further demonstrates our commitment to the transatlantic relationship. Already, the

transatlantic economy is the largest in the world, accounting for one-third of all global trade and one-half of global output. Annual outflow from the U.S. and the EU represent about three-quarters of global Foreign Direct Investment. TTIP negotiations are ongoing, but we need to match our aspirations with political decisiveness and constructive engagement with all stakeholders. Achieving a comprehensive agreement in the coming year will set a global “gold standard” for free trade, openness and growth.

The U.S. Embassy in Denmark will remain a strong partner of the AmCham, and we will continue to work together to promote U.S. business and to create jobs, growth, and prosperity in our two countries. I am bullish about the coming year and hope everyone in AmCham is, too.

J. Rufus Gifford was sworn in as the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark on August 15, 2013. Prior to his ambassadorship, Ambassador Gifford served as the Finance Chair of the Presidential Inaugural Committee after having held such roles as Finance Director for Obama for America, Finance Director for the Democratic National Committee, and California Finance Director for the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Before making his entrance into politics as a political consultant in California, Ambassador Gifford was a Creative Executive for Davis Entertainment, an independent film company based in Los Angeles. He holds a B.A. from Brown University and is currently a Federal Club Member of the Human Rights Campaign and a Partner in Conservation for the World Wildlife Fund.

AmCham Denmark, under the leadership of Stephen Brugger and the dedication of its capable staff, continues to make great progress as the voice for U.S. and International companies in Denmark. This is especially evident as we look back on 2013 and the high level access that AmCham achieved within the Danish Government, and the value these opportunities provided to our members.

The core of our policy agenda is to build a more competitive business and investment climate in Denmark, one that encourages investments and creates jobs. 2014 is an exciting year for AmCham Denmark – its 15th year of operation. In May 1999, AmCham was founded by a group of some 40 committed companies with a vision to create a business network supporting U.S. – Danish trade and investment. Today, thanks to the support of these and many more great companies, AmCham’s representation has grown to more than 250 companies actively investing in Denmark and the United States.

In this 15th anniversary edition of our Yearbook & Membership Directory, we look back at AmCham’s colorful history with a special pictorial timeline, marking special events, people and achievements, and showing AmCham’s development from inception to present day. You might see some familiar faces through the years – maybe even your own.

This publication is also rich with examples of the access and accomplishments that took place during 2013, where we delivered one of the strongest programs of value-added events in our history. Our efforts this past year took many forms, including policy-driven meetings with key ministers, as well as political and business leaders; stimulating, high-level networking events; and enhanced promotion and profiling opportunities for our members.

AmCham Denmark’s Business Barometer is an annual survey of AmCham

members gauging the current business climate and future trends in and future needs.

The survey was conducted between August 24 and September 13, 2010. It

was sent to 237 general managers (or approved alternate) and received 106

responses – a 45% response rate. The respondents represented companies

with headquarters both inside Denmark (35%) and outside Denmark (65%).

Meet the Leaders

2013 provided AmCham’s members with access to several key political leaders.

In January, AmCham Denmark members gathered at the residence of U.S. Ambassador Laurie S. Fulton for AmCham’s annual New Year’s Reception, which featured Minister for Economics and the Interior, Margrethe Vestager. Over 100 business leaders attended this highly anticipated occasion, where they indulged in an array of lavish canapés and beverages, courtesy of Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers.

In March, participants gathered at Ernst & Young for a “Meet the Leaders” session with Danish Minister of Finance, Bjarne Corydon. This was the first opportunity for the Minister to meet with AmCham, but also a welcome opportunity to discuss the new “Growth Plan DK” and the general outlook for the Danish economy.

The Minister talked openly about his analysis of the present political situation – both in Denmark and on a European level.

In September, AmCham Denmark’s 7th annual Foreign Investor Summit focused on drivers of investment and growth. AmCham presented the findings from its 2013 Business Barometer, which once again highlighted the high cost of doing business as the main challenge to attracting investments to Denmark. The summit’s keynote was delivered by Nick Hækkerup, Denmark’s Minister for Trade and European Affairs.

The business perspective was presented by three international companies with significant investments in Denmark: Hess, Bayer and Novozymes; all of whom expressed concern about whether their level of investment can be sustained. The event concluded with a lively political debate between former Minister

for Taxation, Kristian Jensen (V) and the Social Democrat’s speaker on Trade and European Affairs, Mette Reissmann - both of whom acknowledged the challenges Denmark faces when trying to attract investments from abroad.

In late October, AmCham participated in the first-ever SelectUSA Global Investment Summit in the U.S., where more than 1,000 participants from 60 countries gathered in Washington D.C. in this two-day summit.

Speakers included: President Obama, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, as well as several CEO’s from leading U.S. and International companies. U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, J. Rufus Gifford, led a small delegation from Denmark to the summit, which included AmCham’s Executive Director, Stephen Brugger and the Embassy’s Senior Commercial Officer, Bjarke Frederiksen.

AmCham strives to provide its members with up-to-date knowledge, directly from the experts themselves. 2013 boasted multiple events with key stakeholders and thought leaders alike.

In February, AmCham’s HR Committee organized a series of events with Manpower’s David Arkless, aimed at initiating a dialogue between business and key parliamentarians on the need for a comprehensive National Talent Strategy.

Following an exclusive interview with Børsen, Arkless delivered a keynote on “How to Navigate the Human Age” at a business luncheon hosted by Manpower Group. Representatives of the HR Committee then joined Arkless for a roundtable session with the Danish Parliamentary Committee on Research & Innovation, focusing on the importance of linking

Denmark’s Talent Strategy closely to its investment strategy.Following the committee meeting, Arkless joined HR Committee Chair, Charlotte Mark (Microsoft) for a session with the Minister for Research and Innovation Morten Østergaard. The day was rounded out with an exclusive dinner at Moltke’s Palæ.

In March, AmCham joined the U.S. Embassy and Dansk Industri (DI) in welcoming Daniel Hamilton, Johns Hopkins University’s Director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations, for a roundtable discussion on the prospects for The Transatlantic Trade and Investment (TTIP) initiative. Professor Hamilton discussed the enormous importance of the transatlantic economy, and how it is driven not so much by open trade, but by bilateral investments and the ensuing intra-company trade.

In late April, AmCham Denmark teamed up with Dansk Erhverv (The Danish Chamber of Commerce) and sister organizations WEAR and Guldsmedebranchen, for an informational seminar on the future of the retail industry, entitled, “The Retail Revolution.” Nearly 75 participants from across business sectors convened at Deloitte Copenhagen to hear industry experts discuss how technology is rapidly changing the industry.

Each year, AmCham recognizes member excellence through two special achievement awards.

The Transatlantic Company of the Year award highlights the importance, contributions and positive impact of Danish companies actively investing in the United States. The Foreign Company of the Yearaward recognizes the importance and positive impact of foreign companies investing in Denmark.

Transatlantic Company of the Year

In April, Danish high-tech defense, security and space company, Terma, was named AmCham Denmark’s 2013 Transatlantic Company of the Year, for their brilliant use of strategic partnerships in transatlantic business development - partnerships that have secured their central role in providing and participating inthe world’s largest industrialR&D project: the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The runners up were: Bavarian Nordic, Coloplast and Haldor Topsøe. Previous winners include Novo Nordisk (2010), Grundfos (2011) and Novozymes (2012).

Prior to the award ceremony, AmCham conducted a Transatlantic Business Roundtable, which featured a keynote speech by CEO of Novo Nordisk, Lars Rebien Sørensen and a transatlantic debate with two former Foreign Ministers, Mogens Lykketoft and Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.

Foreign Company of the Year

In October, Biogen Idec Manufacturing became AmCham’s 2013 Foreign Company of the Year, in recognition of their contribution to employment, job creation and investments in Denmark. The jury described Biogen Idec’s facility in Hillerød as being one of the largest greenfield investments ever made by a foreign company –creating 525 high wage jobs thus far.

The award ceremony took place during AmCham’s Fall Member Reception at Copenhagen Town Hall’s celebrated “Festsal.”

Award finalists included GlaxoSmithKline, Hess, Medtronic and SEB Banken. Previous winners include Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers (2010), Siemens (2011) and McDonald’s (2012).

AmCham Denmark prides itself on providing its member companies with the support and facilitation of special committees that identify tough issues impacting their operations.These committees drive policy and advocacy, developing positions that AmCham as an organization can then take further to key decision makers. In February, the AmCham HR Committee was the driver behind a series of events on February 5 focusing on the need for a National Talent Strategy and featuring the renowned expert in the field, Manpower’s David Arkless.

Later that month, AmCham Denmark’s Board and three policy committees met with Professor Peter Birch Sørensen to discuss the work of the Danish Productivity Commission and possible recommendations for future policy. AmCham’s Healthcare Committee initiated the meeting as a follow-up to their September 2012 report on the “Benefits of a Healthy Workforce,” which outlines potential productivity gains by utilizing innovative healthcare solutions.

In April, more than 200 researchers, chemists, suppliers and industry experts gathered at the Scandic Copenhagen Hotel

for the 13th annual Executive Seminars in Analytical Chemistry event. ESAC 2013 featured the latest developments within Clinical/Forensic, Food/Environment, Life Science/Biotech and Pharmaceutical applications.

In May the AmCham Healthcare Committee met with Adam Wolf, Director of Danish Regions, for a roundtable discussion on the financial challenges facing the Danish healthcare sector.

The October meeting of the Healthcare Committee with Jan Rose Skaksen and Jakob Kjellberg of KORA, highlighted the issue of how to ensure Denmark gets the best possible value in terms of health for the significant amount of money being spent.

And, in November, U.S. Ambassador Rufus Gifford hosted a meeting of the Healthcare Committee with Health Minister Astrid Krag. The “Workforce-report” provided a starting point for a frank exchange on how business can contribute to a better use of resources in the public health sector.

4 Executive Seminars in Analytical Chemistry 2013

The AmCham Finance Committee continued its work on improving the tax climate in Denmark and held roundtable discussions with speakers on tax Brian Mikkelsen (Conservative) and Nadeem Farooq (Radikale Venstre), as well as head of the Tax Authority Jesper Rønnow Simonsen. The discussions centered on the most pressing issues for business and how to improve conditions for international investments.

Policy

At the core of AmCham’s policy agenda is to build a more competitive business and investment climate in Denmark, and to communicate the important contributions of multinationals to the Danish economy. AmCham continues its outreach to key decision makers, as a forum for getting industry challenges, and proposed solutions, heard in the political debate.

Folkemødet

In June, AmCham participated in Folkemødet, the annual political “festival” on the Danish island of Bornholm. For its debut year at the Festival, AmCham organized a debate on the contribution of multinational corporations to the Danish economy with the provocative title, “What do we need the multinationals for? They don’t pay tax anyway…”

McDonald’s Managing Director, Steve Shillington, kicked off the

debate by describing a recent Copenhagen Economics study on the impact of McDonalds’ on the Danish society.

The ensuing panel debate was moderated by journalist and blogger Jarl Cordua, and featured Thomas Jensen and Ole Birk Olesen, speakers on tax policy for the Social Democrats and Liberal Alliance, respectively. Economic expert Martin Thelle from Copenhagen Economics also commented on the current state of international investments in Denmark.

Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership

In October, AmCham teamed up with Dansk Industri to host more than 200 business leaders, politicians and stakeholders in the conference, “A New Era for EU-US Trade.” Speakers included business leaders from both sides of the Atlantic. Following the conference, key stakeholders

were invited to an informal U.S. Wine Tasting Dinner to continue the discussion with members of AmCham.

Easier Exchange of Driver’s Licenses

In mid-October, the Danish Minister of Justice released a proposal that sought to make it easier for many expats to switch to a Danish driver’s license. AmCham Denmark has long argued that these rules constitute a frustrating and completely unnecessary barrier for foreign talent coming to Denmark. We look forward to the new rules taking effect in 2014.

In April, the Expat Leadership Forum met with host Benny Engelbrecht, MP (S) at the Danish Parliament (Folketinget) for a discussion on “Working with the Danish Government.” The program consisted of presentations by Mr. Engelbrecht, Jan Juul Christensen and Sune Wæsel, from Public Affairs consultancy Rud Pedersen, who discussed ”Relationship Building with theDanish Government.”

In October, AmCham’s Executive Forum invited several managing directors who lead subsidiaries of multinationals in Denmark to share advice in a session entitled “Punching Above Your Weight.” Managers of subsidiaries in

Denmark know that they have to fight for internal investments from their headquarters – and competition can be fierce, especially when bigger economies overshadow smaller ones. The event was hosted by Copenhagen Capacity.

In May, Members of AmCham’s Expat Leadership Forum joined the Øresundsgruppen (an informal network of Swedish and Danish senior executives), to discuss the future of the Scandinavian aviation industry. The event took place at the historic Wilhelm Lauritzen Terminal at Copenhagen Airport and featured presentations by Scandinavian Airlines CEO Rickard Gustafson and Copenhagen Airport CEO Thomas Woldbye.

Expansion through lean branches instead of companies is often more cost-efficient. In most other countries, this entails costs, administration and other adverse consequences to relieve dou-ble taxation. Denmark offers a unique tax rule stating that income from foreign branches of a Danish company is generally not taxed in Denmark. thanks to an infamous sel� e, is

about to look less recognisable. Politi-

cally, anyway.� orning-Schmidt is due to receive

an o� cial parliamentary reprimand –

which in Danish is called a ‘næse’ (nose)

– for her role in the ‘Christiania Case’,

a political scandal that has also cost the

jobs of her justice minister and the head

of the domestic intelligence agency PET.

At the time of going to press, the

size of � orning-Schmidt’s nose was still

under debate – really, we are not making

this up. Left-wing party Enhedslisten,

a sometime supporter of � orning-

Schmidt’s coalition government, thinks

the PM should get o� with just a minor

tweak of the nose. “It’s not one of the bigger ones,”

Enhedslisten’s Pernille Skipper told DR

Nyheder.Right-wing Dansk Folkeparti’s Peter

Skaarup, however, thinks “it should be

big.”� e prime minister faced a parlia-

mentary hearing last week on Friday

regarding an admission from Morten

Bødskov (S), her former justice minister,

that he lied to parliament. Documents came forward last week

that revealed that the PM’s o� ce and

the Justice Ministry had an email corre-

spondence about the contents of a press

release Bødskov sent on November 19.

On one of the drafts, Bødskov o� ered

a concession that he gave “an inaccurate

picture” to parliament’s legal committee

about the real reason a planned visit by

the same committee to the freetown of

Christiania was cancelled.

Freedom of information law scrutinised

debate about the new freedom of in-

formation act, o� entlighedsloven, that

came into e� ect on January 1.

ence between the Justice Ministry and

the Prime Minister’s O� ce was handed

over to parliament’s legal committee.

� e emails reveal that the Prime

Minister’s O� ce had known for some

time that Bødskov lied to parliament

about why a trip to Christiania had to

be cancelled, which ultimately led to his

departure.

er have been publicly known if agents

working for the domestic intelligence

agency PET had also not leaked infor-

mation to the press.� e new freedom of information act

prevents correspondence between min-

istries from being released to the public

through freedom of information requests.

All parties except Enhedslisten,

Dansk Folkeparti (DF) and Liberal Al-

liance – parties that traditionally do not

hold ministerial positions – voted in fa-

vour of the law.“With regard to the papers that

see the openness has not increased

[with the new freedom of information

act],” Enhedslisten’s legal spokesperson

would have come to light by request-

ing government documents, and it has

called for the law to be reviewed before

2017, as is planned.“� e problem is that there was al-

ways a majority who didn’t agree with

our view, but we can only hope that this

case makes the majority reconsider, and

that the government decides to pursue a

more open freedom of information act,”
