Introduction: After the hijrah when the Prophet (saw) came to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah also used to observe this day with fasting. The Prophet (saw) asked them the reason of their fasting on this day. They said, "This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa (as) fasted on this day giving t hanks to Allah." The Prophet (saw) said, "We have more claim to Musa than you." He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on t his day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865) In another report it is mentioned t hat, Jews of Madinah used to hold a feast on this day. The Prophet (saw) told his Companions to fast instead. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1866) Imam at-Tirmidhi mentioned that, ibn Abbas (ra) used to say that: We should fast on two da ys: the 9th and 10th o f Muharram to distinguish ourselves from the Jewish community. (At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 686) Importance of fasting on Ashura:  1. Forgiveness from sins of previous year: Fasting the day of Ashura does exp iate for the past year, because the Pro phet (saw) said: ³Fasting the day of Arafah I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of Ashura I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.´ Narrated by Muslim, 1162. This is by the  bounty that Allah bestows upo n us, whereby fasting one day e xpiates for the sins of a whole year. And Allah is the Owner o f great bounty. 2. Jahannam will become Haram: The Prophet (saw) said, "Whoever fasts the 'Ashura, Allah will write for him 1000 wishes and 1000 years of age, and will grant him the reward o f a thousand martyrs, and will write for him the reward of Ismail (as), and writes for him seventy 70  palaces in paradise, and makes his flesh forbidden from the hellfire." 3. After the hijrah when the Prophet (saw) came to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah

Allah." The Prophet (saw) said, "We have more claim to Musa than you." He fasted on that dayand commanded Muslims to fast on this day.

(Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865)

In another report it is mentioned that, Jews of Madinah used to hold a feast on this day. TheProphet (saw) told his Companions to fast instead.

Importance of fasting on Ashura:

1. Forgiveness from sins of previous year: Fasting the day of Ashura does expiate for the past

year. And Allah is the Owner of great bounty.

2. Jahannam will become Haram: The Prophet (saw) said, "Whoever fasts the 'Ashura, Allahwill write for him 1000 wishes and 1000 years of age, and will grant him the reward of a

thousand martyrs, and will write for him the reward of Ismail (as), and writes for him seventy 70 palaces in paradise, and makes his flesh forbidden from the hellfire."

Ahad" 1000 times on the day of Ashura, Allah will glance at him with the Eyes of Mercy, andwill write him from amongst the Siddiqqin [The Truthful]."

Conclusion:

It is Sunnah (highly recommended) to fast the day of Ashura and we should maintain it as afollower of Muhammad (saw). It is true that, here is no blame in not fasting on this day. But for

achieving so much benefits, can't we fast a single day? May Allah bless us opportunity toovercome our evilness so that we can fast on this noble day
