The Village Chapel Pinehurst, North Carolina
April 22, 2018
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Our Mission
As an interdenominational Christian community,
we worship God in spirit and truth;
teach and encourage the Christian faith;
support the spiritual needs of our congregation, and
reach out to others with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
2
The Village Chapel An Enduring Vision of Christian Unity
“It is believed by many that the influence of the Chapel is far reaching and that its
message going out Sunday by Sunday to its world congregation, will have great effect in
uniting the Christian forces of the land into a fellowship and a brotherhood unit until it can
be said again as it was said of old: ‘See how these Christians love one another.’” The Rev’d
William B. Hannon, “The Pinehurst Outlook,” November, 1924.
As The Village Chapel begins its second century of worship and service to God, we are
emboldened by our founding principles of Christian unity and community service, which
were inspired by the words and example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; through His
death and resurrection; the Great Commission; and His prayer for unity “that we all may be
one.”
Located in the center and present at the inception of a community of religious expression -
and seeking to be in harmony with the fellowship that has been a basic principle in the
Village of Pinehurst - The Village Chapel offers a unique and gracious vision to its
members and the community beyond: The actual reality of a church that is thankful for,
dependent on, and inspired by the saving grace of Jesus Christ; a church that is welcoming,
prayerful, and pre-eminent in the life of our community; and a church that—without regard
for religious divisions within the Body of Christ—will always proclaim in thought, word,
and deed the Good News that we are all united in Jesus Christ!
“This Chapel will always stand for Christian Unity. Anyone who reads the 17th Chapter of
St. John will believe that we are carrying out the desires of Jesus Christ. We believe that
there is a deep blessedness in Christian fellowship. In whatever household of faith you
were born, whatever creed you now profess, you can come to this sanctuary and feel at
home in your Father’s house. Our constant prayers rise to the throne of God for our
nation in these days that call for sacrifice, courage and faith. We cordially invite you to
worship with us.” The Village Chapel’s welcoming statement, 1924.
If you are visiting this morning, we welcome you to The Village Chapel and hope that
you are with us again soon. We encourage you to register your attendance
in the red Fellowship Folder found on the middle-aisle side of each pew.

* Nicene Creed (People)
I believe in one God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; and
in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God,
Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; by whom all
things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy
Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and
was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on
the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose
kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the
Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the
Prophets. And I believe one holy catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of
sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead; and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers for the Church and People
Invitation to Communion
Prayer of General Confession (People)
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail
our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time, most grievously have committed by thought,
word, and deed, against Thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly Thy wrath and indignation against us. We do
earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. The remembrance of them is grievous unto us,
the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for Thy Son
our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please Thee
in newness of life, to the honor and glory of Thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:

Prayer of Humble Access (People)
We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy
manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art
the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy
dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls
washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us. Amen.
Holy Communion
Prayer of Thanksgiving (People)
Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to feed us who have duly
received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour
Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are very members
incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs
through hope of thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and passion. And we humbly
beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and
do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee
and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

How Healthcare Privacy Laws Affect TVC
Often the only way the Pastors at TVC know that someone
has entered the hospital or other medical facility is when they are
notified by that person or a family member or friend. Because of
privacy laws, hospitals do not notify churches about their
members, even though the hospital asks for church affiliation
information at check in. Whenever it is desirable for the pastors
to know about a situation affecting a member of our church
family, please contact the office, or one of the pastors. Contact
information is found on the back page of the bulletin each week.
Two National Day of Prayer Observances at TVC
The Village Chapel will host a National Day of Prayer Service, Thursday, May
3, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel Sanctuary. This will be a service of scripture
readings, music, and prayers for our nation.
On the evening before, The Village Chapel will host a dinner and a special
speaker on the importance of prayer in our lives, on May 2, from 5:45-8 p.m., in
the Chapel Hall. After dinner, you will hear Cleta Mitchell, a Washington, D.C.
attorney and resident of Pinehurst, who has represented numerous political
candidates and members of Congress and non-profit organizations; as well as
serving as legal counsel to the National Republican Senatorial and Congressional
Committees. She is a frequent guest on network and cable news programs.
For more information call the Chapel office at 295-6003. All are welcome.

Outreach Committee Position
The Outreach Committee is in need of two additional
members due to the "retirement" of Don and Vickie Taylor. We are
thankful for their years of hard work as major contributors.
The Outreach Committee is responsible for determining
allocation of the mission funds of The Village Chapel to deserving
entities locally, across the state and nation and even worldwide. We
are also actively involved in supporting local non-profits with our
time and talents. We meet five to six times a year. This is an active
committee which engages in lively exchanges and productive
work.
Please contact Dan Joslin at 910-295-1799, if you think you
may be interested in serving the Chapel in this capacity.
Habitat Faith Build Home Dedication
All are encouraged to witness the dedication of the latest home that Habitat
has built. This was a Faith Build House that The Village Chapel and many other
churches supported financially as well as by our members contributing work hours.
The location is 320 N. Gaines in Southern Pines. The date is Tuesday, April 24, at 6:00
p.m.
These home dedications are the culmination of God's people putting our
love of Him into action and will last approximately 30 minutes. Always time well
spent. See the outcome of the work of our members: Ann Torok, Esther Acker,
Freida Powers, Rich Cowell, Bob Esselman, Mark Valentinas and four of his amazing
friends. You may contact Dan Joslin for more information.
