The first women’s soccer World Cup tournament took place in 1991. Since that time, six additional women’s soccer World Cup tournament have followed. The US Women’s National Soccer Team has experienced more success than any other national program over the last 25 years, winning three World Cup trophies and finishing runner up in 2011. Germany is the only other nation with more than one World Cup win.

The US National Team took the first-ever World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Norway in 1991, but failed to defend the championship in 1995.

US Women's National Soccer Team In 1999, the United States returned to the World Cup final and

triumphed in one of the event’s most memorable matches. After overtime play between the United States and China ended in a 0-0 draw, the game was decided by a penalty shootout, which the US team narrowly won 5-4.

After unsatisfactory showings in both the 2003 and 2007 events, a determined US Women’s squad progressed through the 2011 World Cup tournament and again reached the final. In another memorable game, this time against Japan, the US team found itself tied 2-2 after extended time. On this occasion the penalty shootout did the US team a disservice, with Japan winning 3-1. In 2015, the most recent World Cup, the United States overwhelmed Japan in a rematch of the 2011 final, taking the game 5-2 for its third victory. It was the most lopsided women’s World Cup final in history.
